Most homeowners one day face the inevitable task of repainting their home. The project is plagued by substantial cost, time, planning, and labor. One silver lining to such an obligation is the ability to modify house colors. This decision, however, may seem just as burdensome as the actual labor. Complementary primary, secondary, and accent colors usually need to be selected.

5 Ways To Decorate Your Kitchen On A Budget

Getting a kitchen remake can be tough on your bank account, but there are some ways that you can give your kitchen a whole new look even if you are on a tight budget. These 5 decorating tips wont break the bank but will have a lot of impact on the way your kitchen looks.

Getting a kitchen remake can be tough on your bank account, but there are some ways that you can give your kitchen a whole new look even if you are on a tight budget. These 5 decorating tips wont break the bank but will have a lot of impact on the way your kitchen looks.

1.Spruce it up with paint.

Paint has the biggest bang for the buck when redecorating any room and especially for the kitchen. Its fairly inexpensive and easy to use and can change the whole look of the room in a day! You can use paint to update worn out cabinets as well as adding a new look to your walls. If you are adventurous, you can even try some faux painting to give your walls the look of old world plaster or marble. Your local home improvement store probably gives lessons in this for free.

2.New hardware and knobs.

While this may cost you a bit more than paint, replacing your cabinet hardware and knobs can make a huge difference in the look of your kitchen. Theres tons of different styles and colors to choose from everything from a 1930s glass drawer pull to knobs styled like modern aluminum kitchen utensils. If you are planning on redecorating your kitchen, you might want to look at knobs first you might find a style or color that gives you the inspiration for the whole room!

3. Put Up A Border

A wallpaper border is easy work and can make a drastic change without putting much or a dent in your kitchen decorating budget. Sometimes you can even find a pleasing pattern in the discontinued bin for little money. Just make sure there is enough to paper the area you want before you bring it home! If you dont like any of the paper borders, find a stencil that you like and use that the cost of paint for this will be minimal. A traditional place for a border is a the top of the wall next to the ceiling, but it can also look nice at chair rail height and also as a backsplash above your kitchen countertops.

4.Go For A Molding

Want a new cabinet look but new cabinets arent in your budget? You can buy moldings for the sides, top and doors of your cabinet that will enhance and change the look of any kitchen. You can even buy little bun feet to put on the edges to give your kitchen a country look. While these might cost a bit more than some of these other ideas it is well worth it for the dramatic change it has on your cabinets. Fancy rope trim, and fluted moldings can be glued on to your cabinets to give them a little pizzaz. Decorative crown moldings can be added to the top. If your doors are too plain, you can even buy moldings to add interest to the door panels.

5. Vinyl TilesIf your floor is outdated, dirty and grungy then getting a new floor will make a huge difference in the look of your kitchen. You may not even notice how dingy the floor looks and may be reluctant to budget in any money for a floor but try to take a fresh look at it and really notice what it looks like. When I sold my house I thought my kitchen floor was a little old but just fine my realtor took one look and convinced me that a new floor would help me get more for the house. I put a new floor in and couldnt believe the difference! You can install vinyl tiles yourself for as little as 50 cents a square foot, of course the more you pay the better quality floor you will get and the longer it will last so a mid range price of $3.00 a square foot is probably more realistic.

The Tacoma Vent Visor: Complete Your Vacation Gear

When it comes to long trips and other hard-core traveling, the Toyota Tacoma is engineered to meet most off-road driving requirements. Newly and totally redesigned in 2005, the Toyota Tacoma is currently topping the charts with improved sales statistics (as much as 28.4% during the first two months of this year)–a stark contrast to the sharp declines of rival models.

The Tacoma has really hit it big with it’s redesign. With it’s much more masculine styling, the Toyota Tacoma is a lot more eye-catching than most other Toyota models. And with the high-performance, 236 horsepower V-6 engine that is purchased with it makes the Tacoma not only all-flashy decors — it comes with a powerful performance to boot.

The interiors are not to be bypassed. Equipped with easy to clean upholstery, comfortable bucket seats, large knobs that are easy to grip even with gloves on, and a remarkably quiet cabin, the Tacoma has really very satisfied test drivers. There’s plenty of space enough for a whole family!
Of course, a pick-up is not complete without the towing package. The Toyota Tacoma can pull up to 6,500 lbs.–giving plenty of things to lug around for recreational activities. A prospective Tacoma buyer has a choice of a six-foot or five-foot bed. The longer bed naturally gives more space (for bikes and other big stuff), but the downside is that it makes turning and parking a tricky task.

Fuel economy is a significant matter, especially with continuing increase of oil price. If you’re concerned about your gas mileage (and your budget), the two-wheel drive Toyota Tacoma with a regular cab and a four-cylinder engine is rated to get 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway — just right for long trips to the beach or the countryside.

With a made-for-vacation-trip vehicles such as the Toyota Tacoma, long trips can get oppressive and there are times when you just can’t resist the thought of smelling the fresh country air or the sea breeze when you go for long trips. However, at times, there are certain circumstances that prevent you from doing this: things such as excessive traffic noise, too much wind and cold air, and rain or snow getting into your interiors and your face.

Fortunately, there’s a simple and practical (not to mention affordable) accessory that all you fresh-air loving automobile owners can get for your cars. The Tacoma vent visors, or more popularly known as rain guards, deflects rain and snow, hence allowing you to lower down your windows a few inches without getting wet. Installing Tacoma vent visors will also help in keeping the noise and strong winds out of your car. And the Tacoma vent visors also enhance the style and over-all character of your car by adding a smoky effect to your windows.

We all want our pride and joy to look our best, and our trips to be as enjoyable as possible. The Tacoma vent visor is one of the most useful yet most affordable accessories that you can install your Toyota Tacoma.

Alyssa Chandler is a house mother to three adorable kids. She enjoys taking care of her kids, playing with them, and driving them to school. For busy mothers like her, purchasing parts for her Toyota, (Toyota Vent Visors, for example) is a preference.

Preparing (paul decorative products) For An Appraisal - Plan For It

Filed under: Texas Knobs N' Things — Admin @ 7:40 am

Preparing For An Appraisal - Plan For It

A critical part of selling a home is the appraisal. Here?s how to plan for it.

You have a contract to sell your home and now the appraiser is coming. The appraisal needs to come in at a good price in order for your buyer to get his loan. What should you do?

The Appraiser Says

Appraisers typically tell people not to do anything special before they come. They tell the owner they see lots of houses and they can look past a little clutter and dust. ?Don?t be nervous,? they counsel. Appraisers are sincere people. I?m sure they mean what they say.

I Say

On the other hand, appraisers are human. They respond to cleanliness and order and to good maintenance the same way buyers do. If you?ve let your hair down, get your home back into ?show? condition before the appraiser comes.

Everything you know about a tidy approach to your home, well mulched flower beds, door knobs that are attached firmly and work smoothly, lack of finger prints, lack of clutter, and all the rest applies. Take a look at a ?Uniform Residential Appraisal Report? form if you doubt me. The age of the home and the ?effective age? are asked for under the ?General Description.? Don?t you think how well your home appears to be cared for affects the number that appears under ?effective age??

The Uniform Appraisal Report requires information about materials (and their condition) used for floors, walls, trim and finishing elements, bathroom floors and wainscots, and for interior doors. Appraisers train themselves to notice these details. If yours are dusted, polished, and free of scratches and fingerprints, don?t you think you might be giving your appraisal a nudge in the right direction?

The Report also asks about kitchen equipment (refrigerator, range and oven, disposal, dishwasher, fan and hood, microwave, and washer and dryer). Do you think it?d be a good idea to have them clean and purring?

The Report asks about amenities such as fireplaces, patios, decks, porches, fences, pools, and sheds. If an appraiser is going to take special note of such things, shouldn?t they be swept, cleaned, and have paint in good condition? Also, clean out the gutters if they need it. If it should be raining on the day your appraisal is done, you want your house to handle the rain water well.

Let me share the ?comments? section of an appraisal which got the owners what they wanted. I think it?ll give you a good feel for what you need to do. ?The subject is well maintained and no physical, functional or external inadequacies were noted. Marketability is enhanced by hardwood flooring throughout a majority of the home, an updated kitchen, fresh interior and exterior paint, transom windows, built-ins, a front porch, a rear patio, a large storage shed, 4 fireplaces, etc.?

The appraiser is a human being. Make sure you do everything you can to appeal to them and you?ll get a good appraisal.

Baby Nursery Bedding And Furniture

Your family is expanding, and you need to start planning the nursery for the little one. The choices may seem daunting at first, but if you take it a step a time, it?s not that hard. If this is your first, a lot of things will be taken care of by family and friends at a baby shower, but they will probably want your input.

Furniture

The variety of baby furniture is as large as adult furniture. You have your choice of many styles, wood stain color or painted, and new or used. While buying used furniture is frugal, be sure that the furniture still meets safety standards and check for any old recalls that may have been missed by the previous owner. Most used furniture is in very good shape, and is well worth the savings.

There are three basic types of beds for newborns, cradles, cribs and co-sleepers:

- Cradles are usually recommended for newborns, as it?s easier to keep near the parents? bed, if there is room. It?s also more comforting for the newborn. However, the newborn outgrows the cradle fairly quickly.

- Cribs are an investment, but by shopping wisely, that investment will pay off in the long run. Many of the cribs today are convertible, so they can be reconfigured into a day bed, toddler bed, and eventually a twin bed, by simply adding supports and the larger mattress.

- Co-sleepers are becoming more popular as many families enjoy the closeness of a ?family bed?, but don?t actually want the child in their bed full-time. They are an attachable mini-bed on the side of the parents? bed. They allow the baby to be within arms reach for nighttime nursing, but still have separate sleeping areas. Many people prefer this to actually having the infant in bed with them, for safety reasons as well as a less traumatic transition later, when they feel it?s time for the “big kid” bed.

Dressers

Dressers are another important feature in a nursery. Most cribs have matching dresser sets, but it?s not necessary to have all of it match, as long as it coordinates nicely. Many dressers come with a changing table that can be placed on top, so the baby can still use the dresser as they grow.

Be sure that the dresser is a solid construction, and that it won?t tip over after the little one begins the climbing stage. Check that the knobs can not come off easily, as they can pose a choking hazard.

Bedding

The bedding is one of the most fun parts of any nursery (not counting the baby). There are endless choices for the bedding (which usually consists of sheets, bumper, sheets, and comforters). There are many varieties of the traditional pinks and blues patterns, as well as gender-neutral designs for the parents-to-be who wish to be surprised. One of the recent trends in bedding is using bright primary colors, especially combinations of red, black and white. Studies have shown that these colors help the newborn?s eyesight focus quicker.

There are hundreds of licensed character bedding sets, with matching accessories to decorate the nursery quickly and easily. Many of these are designs that most children will continue to love as they grow older, making it easy to save money in decorating in the future.

Avoid the Flu and Bronchitis at Work

Bronchitis is identified as being either chronic or acute. Acute bronchitis usually is limited into ration to anywhere from a few days to a week or two. It’s often accompanied by flu like symptoms. Once ill, you can expect to have several days, with limited or no productivity, and even more time not performing at your best. While chronic bronchitis tends to last months or even years, the symptoms are much less pronounced and debilitating.

Of these two basic bronchitis categories, acute bronchitis is typically associated with colds and flu like symptoms. The symptoms of acute bronchitis include:

1. A Feeling of Tightness or Constriction in Your Chest

2. Usually a Sore Throat

3. Congestion

4. Wheezing and Difficulty Breathing

5. A Low to Mid Grade Fever

In a business situation, you often see many people coming to work ill claiming it’s all for the good of the company. While I’m certain they have the best of intentions, viral influenza (flu) can be spread through direct person-to-person contact or indirectly in the air and on hard surfaces. This means that if someone who’s sick coughs and doesn’t cover their mouth, they can put everyone at the workplace at risk for contracting the illness.

So consider someone who dutifully covers her mouth when she coughs. While in the break room, she been pours yourself a cup of coffee and sits at the table, transferring ultramicroscopic infectious material to both the coffee pot, coffee cup and table. Anyone coming into contact with any of these physical items could then theoretically be at risk of contracting the flu bug and becoming ill.

Although most flu is viral in nature and therefore contagious, some acute bronchitis is bacterial and not contagious. Unfortunately, you need a medical degree and some tests to determine if someone who is ill is also contagious. The tips below should be considered as a strategy to limit your potential exposure to viruses that could make you sick.

1. Wash your hands. You can dramatically cut the risk of catching many common illnesses through careful handwashing and the use of hand sanitizers.

2. Clean your equipment. If you share an office cubicle, keyboard or telephone, use sanitizing hand wipes before starting your shift

3. Do virtual meetings. When possible, attend meetings virtually using a conference call system. The last time you are in contact with groups of people, the less risk of contracting an illness.

4. Use a paper towel to open doors. Remember the coffee cup example above in the break room? Same is true for doorknobs. If you can use a throwaway paper towel to open doors without looking like a germ obsessive crazy person, this is really a good idea.

5. Use care in the restroom. No guys, I’m not talking about your aim. Consider all surfaces suspect. That toilet or urinal handle has been used by many people before they wash their hands. Heck, it’s no secret that many people use public restrooms and not wash their hands of all. I suggest that when finished, thoroughly wash your hands than using the paper towel you dried them with, open the restroom door when you leave. You can then discreetly dispose of the towel anywhere, but have effectively limited your exposure to potential viral infections.

6. Get a flu shot.

Acute bronchitis can begin with an illness caused by a common influenza virus. Getting an annual vaccination can help protect you from influenza (the flu) and bronchitis.

7. Limit exposure to sick people

During influenza season consider limiting your use of public areas like a break room, kitchen or cafeteria.

8. Cover your mouth.

Be aware of people around you who don’t cover their mouths when they cough. Tried either avoid them or keep your distance when possible.

9. Avoid smoking and smoke whenever possible.

There are many chemicals, fumes and particle dust that can irritate and compromise bronchial passages. None more so however than smoking.

None of these tips should be considered absolute and should be used with a good dose of common sense. While walking around with a scuba tank and rubber gloves may be excessive, many of these tips can go a long way in limiting your exposure to viruses that can result in the flu or even bronchitis.

Abigail Franks writes on a variety of subjects which include family, health, and home. For more information on the flu and bronchitis visit the site at http://www.asthma-treatment-resources.com/bronchitis/bronchitis-index.html and http://www.asthma-treatment-resources.com/

Keeping Baby Safe

Safety For Baby ? Part 1

A is for awareness of parents and caretakers about potential hazards in the child’s environment, including nursery products.

B is for Baby.

C is for caution selecting and maintaining products for the child’s environment.

S is for safety the sum of ABC’s.

Safety alerts and recall hotline ? 1-800-638-2772

This list of safety precautions is information from U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission.

More infants die every year in accidents involving cribs than any other nursery product. When we’re picking out cribs and nursery equipment and toys, we have to go for safety first. It’s tempting to pick out something because it’s the cutest, or the most creative ? but if it harms or even takes the life of our baby, what good is that cuteness or creativeness? Choose safety first!

Corner posts on cribs should not extend more than 1/16 (1 ? mm), above the top of the end panel. Corner posts can be catchpoints for items placed around the child’s neck or clothing worn by a child. Mattress support hangers should be secured by bolts or closed hooks, and checked frequently.

Bumper pads should fit around the entire crib, tie or snapped into place, and have straps or ties at least in each corner, in the middle of each long side, and on both the top and the bottom edges. To prevent your baby from becoming entangled in the ties, trim off excess length after tying. Use the bumpers until the baby can pull up to a standing position, then remove them so that the baby will not use them to try to climb out of the crib.

Remove and destroy all plastic wrapping materials. Never use plastic bags as mattress covers. The plastic film may cling to a baby’s face and cause suffocation.

Make sure the mattress fits tightly. If you can fit more than two fingers between the edge of the mattress and crib sides, the mattress is too small. An infant can suffocate if their head or body becomes wedged between mattress and crib sides.

Never use a crib with broken or missing parts. Avoid older cribs with headboard or footboard designs that may allow an infant’s head to become caught in the openings between corner post and top rail, or in other openings in the top edge of the headboard structure. Which may lead to strangulation.. Do not use cribs with decorative knobs. The knobs should be sawed off, or unscrewed and the surface sanded flush.

To reduce (SIDS), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, put your baby to sleep on his/her back in a crib on a firm, flat mattress. Make sure there is no soft bedding underneath your baby.

Never place your infant to sleep on an adult bed, water bed, or bunk bed. Infants up to 18 months can suffocate in their sleep when their bodies or faces become wedged between the mattress and bed frame or the mattress and wall.

Never put a crib, child bed, or furniture near window blinds or drapery. Children can strangle on window cords or can fall through screens. If local fire codes permit window guards, install them. Make sure that all cords are out of the child’s reach. CPSC has received numerous reports of strangulation deaths on window blind cords over the years. To keep cords out of reach of children, use tie-down devices or take the cord loop and cut it in half to make two separate cords.

Consumers should call toll-free (800) 506-4636 to receive a free repair kit for each set of blinds in their home.

Never use strings to hang any object, such as a mobile or a toy or a diaper bag, on or near the crib where a child could become caught in it and strangle. If you have toys with cords or elastic for hanging, cut the strings/cords off.

To prevent strangulation, NEVER tie pacifiers/teethers around your child’s neck. Remove bibs and necklaces whenever you put your baby in crib or playpen.

Always lock the side rail in its raised position whenever you place your child in the crib. As soon as your child can stand up, adjust the mattress to its lowest position and remove the bumper pads. Also, remove any large toys-an active toddler will use anything for climbing out of the crib.

When your child reaches 35 inches (890 mm) in height, he/she has outgrown the crib and should sleep in a bed.

Never use plastic bags as mattress covers. The plastic film may cause suffocation.

Secure bumper pads around the entire crib and snap or tie in place at least in each corner, in the middle of each long side, and on both the top and the bottom edges. Cut off any excess string length.

Never leave your baby unattended in or around water. Young children can drown as quickly as it takes to grab a towel, answer the phone or door. Hot water can scald. To prevent burns, check the water with your wrist or elbow. The skin is more delicate and sensitive in these areas, and is the closest substitute to the sensitivity of your baby’s skin. Only fill the tub with enough water to cover the baby’s or young child’s legs. All it takes is enough water to cover the mouth and nose for a baby to drown. Watch your baby around any and all water.

When picking out a baby gate, get one with a straight top edge and rigid bars or mesh screen, or an accordion style gate with small V shapes and diamond shaped openings. Be sure it is securely anchored. Gates with an expanding pressure bar should be on the side away from the child.

All parents and childcare guardians should know CPR. If you have any questions about any product’s safety. Please contact The Safety Commission at the phone number above.

Learn French Online and Educate Yourself before the Next Generation Catches You Up

Ever wished to visit France? Walk thru the Champs Elysees? Climb upon the Eiffel Tower? To sail on the Seine? Did you really think to realize that without knowing a scratch of the French language. Common. Stop kidding me! Everywhere around the world people speak different languages but it seems that we are a little bit behind that kind of technology. Doesn’t that makes you wonder? We should prepare ourselves to get educated. We always send our children to the best schools to master a lot of things like French language but do you even know a little bit about it?

This is just a sneak-peak of where you should start.

Greetings: Monsieur Dupont meets Madame La Baronne.

Monsieur Dupont:

Bonjour Madame! (Hello Madam!)

Madame La Baronne:

Bonjour, Monsieur Dupont! (Hello, Mister Dupont!)

Monsieur Dupont:

Comment allez vous? (How are you?)

Madame La Baronne:

Tr?s bien, merci. Et vous? (Fine, Thanks. And you?)

Monsieur Dupont:

Je vais bien, merci. (I’m well, Thanks.)

Well is it that hard? No, you see! We really need to get started to be educated before to try to educate others.

This is my 3-T Formula to learn French and mush more: Tools, Tips and Techniques!

? Learn a lot and master what you’ve learned.

? Take action by listening, reading and writing what you’ve learned.

? Rehearse it with your partner by using all of your knowledge.

? And be patience to understand and to make understand.

A lot of people think that by hanging some name cards on door knobs they are going to learn French but it isn’t that easy. Believe me. Personally I speak fluently four languages and that all with confidence. I learned two of them at home because my mother spoke Dutch and my father French. I learned English by watching American television for a couple of years with French and Dutch subtitles. And the last year I’ve just learned to speak Arabic by living and working in Egypt. So now you see that this is the proof that your brain is unconsciously working while you’re wasting your time like a lazy ? in your sofa watching TV, or listening to your parents or just living in another culture with another language. Thus this will be your lethal weapon to learn French and other languages because your brain is really unconsciously working.

So now you know all that you just need to take the right steps to advance and become a real educated citizen in this wide wide globe of multi-lingual cultures.

Using Woodworking Plans To Do It Up Right

So think you?d like to build a bathroom cabinet. Perhaps a new curio for the front room is in order. You even recognize how nice it would be to make a captain?s bed with a full set of drawers underneath and a headboard that holds books. If you have big plans for building something out of wood, then make sure you have the right woodworking plans and patterns so that you can do it like the professionals.

What?s In a Woodworking Plan

Commercially sold or free woodworking plans found online take all the guess work out of a project. A good plan, not only list the lumber you will need ? type and quantity, but it can give you estimates on how long the whole project will take and evaluate it by skill level. For example, a beginner may not be ready for a curved wood curio cabinet top, but could really do nicely making a lighthouse style birdhouse.

Wood working patterns also contain a hardware and accessories list. You will know ahead of time just how many hinges, knobs and drawer rails your project requires. It will give a description of the best materials to use and even where to get them.

A tool list helps you make sure you have everything you need to work with your supply list. Many plans don?t assume you already own any of the tools so the list is comprehensive and complete. If you need a particular saw blade, the plans will let you know right there in black and white.

Another helpful part about using a woodworking pattern is that all your measurements are there. If you are making the captain?s bed with underneath storage drawers, you will not need to calculate or guess the width each drawer needs to be in order to fit three across. The figuring has been done for you. Even better than just planning, the plan author has most likely made the project several times, so they know from experience.

How Hard Is It To Read Woodworking Plans?

Many plans are created to overcome the language barrier. Pictures illustrate each step and are often all that is necessary without added written descriptions. For those steps that may need the additional explanation, written directions are usually in several of the most common world languages.

You don?t need to have a degree in hammering and gluing to understand how these directions work. If you have every put one of those ?some assembly required? toys together, then you will be pleasantly surprised that reading woodworking plans is actually easier!

The Finishing Touches

Many wood working patterns come with illustrations or photographs of the finished project. Line drawings are always included, but it is also nice to see the finished piece in a photograph. This will give you ideas for staining or painting the finished wood project. Also you can get an idea of how it might look in a room in your home. Don?t be afraid to take on a wood working project just because you can?t see how it?s all put together from the outside. Chances are somebody has wanted to make one of their own and has drawn up just the pattern you need.

How To Change A Guitar String

Learning how to change a guitar string is a complicated task that can intimidate most people, if you want to play guitar this is something you must master. At concerts there is usually someone dedicated to changing strings between songs. This seems like an amazing feat, but if they can do it, you can also learn how to change a guitar string quickly.

As with any other aspect of playing a musical instrument, being able to change guitar strings, has its rules. Firstly, make sure you do one at a time, and when loosening the pegs, do so carefully. Knowing how to change a guitar string, doesn?t mean just cutting the string, or yanking it, as this will most certainly lead to the injury of yourself or a damaged guitar. You should then loosen the end pegs, which may seem stubborn, but do not try to ply them out in agitation, you will damage them, and then you?re stuck. Be gentle to your guitar, and then the process of how to change a guitar string will be a breeze. After the long process of being careful and making certain of things and you have the string out, you are now ready to move on to the next one. As said before do not be in any sort of rush, this is not a procedure that can be hurried. It?s like a doctor working on his patient. Your guitar was hurt (the strings were damaged) and you are the doctor needing to give it new life. If you are not careful you might end up shortening the life of your guitar. And always remember never to use furniture polish.

So, when all old, damaged strings are out, you can start unwrapping the new ones. For easy stringing be sure to buy the strings that come with the color coded knobs on the end, as this lets you know which notes each string plays. If you are still unsure, there are plenty stores that sell a how to change a guitar string manual, though, it will most likely be a maintenance manual.

Now that you?ve figured out how to change a guitar string and which string goes into which hole, you can start threading them through one at a time. Start with putting the knob end of the string into the peg hole and reinserting the peg. Please remember, to save yourself some time, after inserting the string and the peg into the hole; keep the string taut at all times. After you have done this with one, you are ready to insert the other end of the string into the tuning peg. Remember that you want to tighten the tuning peg, always, to the right. Once you are happy with the first one, you can move on to the second and then the third, then the fourth and so on, until your guitar is ready for another jamming session. All the while, always keep in mind that the best and easiest way to change a guitar string lies in a very cool head. Keep your cool and like, with everything in life you will do it with professional ease. Learning how to change a guitar string is an art on its own, so a professional musician is a person who is good at all sorts of art forms. Can you call yourself a pro?

Flu Symptoms - Facts - Preventive Measures and What to Do if You Already Have the Flu

The flu (shortened from Influenza, also known as Grippe) is a highly contagious viral infection that occurs in the winter months and early spring. It attacks suddenly with symptoms we are all familiar with. You may begin to experience the symptoms from one to four days after getting infected by the flu virus.

Symptoms:

  • Fever ? Generally between 101F and 102F
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Severe headache
  • Prostration
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Aching muscles
  • General fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Some Facts:

  • Typical of the flu: Rapidity to spread and highly contagious.

  • Incubation period: From one to four days.
  • You can catch the flu from someone who looks perfectly healthy as the infected person can infect others before he or she experiences any symptoms.

  • During the first five ? seven days after the onset, you can still infect others.
  • There are three different general categories of influenza viruses: Type A, Type B and Type C. All three types can mutate or change into new strains. Type A mutates consistently, creating new strains of the virus. So what are the consequences of this? You can never develop a permanent immunity to the flu.

  • In uncomplicated cases, the intense symptoms last for a few days, followed by a progressive recovery to normal health.

  • In advanced cases, pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infection and dehydration may occur.

Transmitted by:

  • Touching contaminated objects by infected individuals, such as keyboards and doorknobs.

  • Inhaling air that contains the virus. Stay away from people who are coughing and sneezing during the flu season.

Preventive Measures:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Don?t sleep in a room with someone who has the flu.
  • Don?t smoke and don?t drink alcohol, as these substances will lower your resistance to infection.
  • If you feel some of the symptoms, chew a clove or more of raw garlic, preferably not on an empty stomach, as it has antiviral properties.
  • What to do if you have the flu:
  • Rest in bed, especially while the fever is high.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • When you have an appetite, eat mild transitional foods until you get back to regular meals- starchy foods like bananas, boiled rice, baked potatoes, cooked cereal, cottage cheese and dry toast.
  • When you have a sore throat, it is good to gargle as needed dissolving 1 tsp of salt in 1 pint of warm water.
  • If you have a headache, put an ice bag on your head. But make sure to keep the room warm. Avoid being chilled.
  • Have a humidifier on or a kettle with water boiling in the room most of the time.
  • Don?t drink alcohol. That will dehydrate you and as mentioned above, it could lower your resistance to infection.

It is very common to confuse the flu with the common cold since both illnesses have very similar symptoms. It is important to stay informed so you can take adequate care.

The Japanese Garden

The growing fascination with Oriental culture has led many garden aficionados to consider creating a Japanese garden. These are just some of the key features to help you in selecting the right accessories, and how they create a look and ambience that is very different from the Western formal garden.

Both formal Western and Japanese gardens will use water features, like a pond. However, the Zen aesthetic and the belief that one must embrace “things as they are” dictates that the water must be pure, and natural. Fountains are forbidden, and the ponds shapes must not look contrived. Streams or waterfalls are preferred, but they must have an “organic” look: never place them in the center, and incorporate a few asymmetrical details and imperfections. Many Japanese ponds will have small islands in the center, or a miniature waterfall. These act as a focal point. Many times the ponds are edged with rough rocks or pebbles, rather than polished stone or tile.

Western gardens also tend to be very structured and symmetrical. The Japanese interpret this as a manipulation of Nature. They would rather preserve Nature, in its spontaneity and irregularity. For them, pure symmetry is too logical–a garden should be spiritual, which means openness to Life and its uniqueness. That is why Japanese gardens tend to look a little “wild”. This doesn’t mean that they’re unkempt, but that the design establishes a pattern and then occasionally “breaks” it so it looks less contrived. The designs also tend to use a lot of curves, rather than lines (like a winding path) and will use elements that have a natural, rough finish. For example, the wooden bridge will make use of planks of different sizes, and will leave in imperfections like crooked edges or knobs.

Western gardens also tend to use sculptures (from Greek goddess to the ever-famous gnomes). The garden features are then organized in such a way to direct the eye to that sculpture. One example is hedge mazes or carefully landscaped bushes encircling a stone statue. For Japanese, this is another sign that human beings are restructuring reality rather than embracing its quirks. Even the sculpture is seen as a human interpretation of art rather than seeing Nature as art.

That’s why instead of sculptures, Japanese gardens will just artistically arrange elements of nature, such as a pile of rocks in different colors and sizes. Even if the gardener “fixes” the arrangement, the whole point of the exercise is to make it look as natural and effortless as possible–as if you had discovered a hidden garden paradise, rather than made one yourself. There may be water basins, stone lanterns, stone towers and wells, but these are never focal points. They are tucked in a corner, sometimes behind a veil of leaves, or are kept small. The colors are kept natural and subtle: grays, browns, and other neutrals. Marble and other “finished” textures, or brightly colored furniture, are frowned upon. Instead, use wood, stone or bamboo. If you need to incorporate lights or sprinkler systems for practical purposes, keep them unobtrusive.

5 Ways to Save Money Remodeling Your Kitchen

So, you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen. It’s a smart move if your motivation is to improve the value of your home. (It’s a smart move if you just want a better kitchen for yourself too.) This is because kitchens are the most important room in the house for most prospective home buyers.

If you’re currently doing your cooking and food preparation in a room that’s dated, dingy, or dilapidated (or all three), it can seriously affect the amount of money people are willing to offer when it’s time to sell your home. Unfortunately, it’s easy to spend tons of money on a kitchen remodel. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, dedicated pot-filling faucets, double ovens, professional cook tops, etc. etc. etc. If you want to buy all that stuff, you can expect to spend tens of thousands of dollars. Some people even spend six figure sums on their kitchens.

Fortunately, it’s possible to update your kitchen and make it look a lot better without spending an arm and a leg. Let’s take a peek at some of the ways you can increase the value of your kitchen without spending a lot of money:

Paint or refinish your cabinets instead of replacing them.

Before you decide you need to completely gut and replace your cabinets, take a good look at them. Are they sound? Are they made of good wood? (If you live in an older home, chances are the cabinets are made from solid wood and of a higher quality than you’ll get today–most of today’s low to mid-end cabinets are made from particleboard with maple/oak/beech “veneers”.)

If they’re basically in good shape, all your cabinets may need is a little low-cost TLC. A paint job is the cheapest way to give them a new look. New door and drawer hardware (knobs and hinges) can help bring your kitchen into the 21st century as well, and it won’t cost a lot. You might also consider just refinishing the fronts and getting new cabinet doors.

Install granite tiles instead of solid granite countertops.

If you want the classy, upscale look of granite, you can achieve it with granite tiles, which are less expensive than solid granite. They can also be installed by the average do-it-yourself homeowner, whereas solid granite countertops need to be cut to fit and installed by a professional.

If you want to save even more money, you can get laminate countertops that are made to look like granite, marble, or other stones. (These won’t likely fool prospective home buyers though.)

Choose laminate flooring instead of hardwood

Wood flooring is popular in kitchens right now, and it’ll cost you a pretty penny to get it installed. However, you can buy laminate flooring that looks a lot like the real deal for about half the price. Laminate is also more forgiving of spills (wood can be damaged over time if repeatedly exposed to moisture), and it’s very easy to keep clean.

Don’t spend a fortune on appliances.

If you want stainless steel, you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on Aga or Viking. Many of the low to mid-end brands are putting out high-end look-alike appliances. GE, for examples, offers stainless steel ovens and refrigerators. True, they won’t fool kitchen snobs, but let’s face it: the people looking to buy your house are more likely to be average Joes, who just want stainless steel and granite because that’s what everybody says is in right now.

Buy new lighting.

Nothing makes a kitchen look dark and dingy like a single overhead ceiling fixture. Lighting is a relatively inexpensive improvement, but it goes a long ways in brightening up the kitchen and making it look good. Make sure to buy modern fixtures. Pendant lighting over eating counters is popular, and under-counter task lighting is smart for brightening up food preparation areas.

To save on lighting, visit stores like Ikea, or consider doing your shopping online. Sites like Nextag.com make it easy to compare prices on lamps and just about anything else.

Hopefully these tips have given you some ideas on how to make your kitchen look like its worth a lot without actually spending a ton of money.

Today’s Great Time Management Mistake

Time Management is Important - But Don’t Schedule Tasks to Time Anymore

Time Management usually involves scheduling activities to time. This however has been the straw on the camel’s back for many people.

This is one of the worst things that people attempt in time management that have only the very best of intentions wanting to get more organized and productive.

Trying to schedule activities for our time management does not last does it? There are too many distractions and changes in mood, preference, suitability, and importance of tasks and projects and responsibilities.

Then we beat ourselves up about it, feeling guilty, and become even less motivated and thus less successful and more overwhelmed than before! Yes?

Consider not scheduling your activities to time.

Top tip: It actually usually works much better to just wing it by jotting a few things down on paper you want to get done, than to try scheduling many activities/tasks to time. You will also enjoy your time more whilst being much more effective too.

So what can you do instead of scheduling activities to time and beyond just jotting down a few tasks per time?

My Localization Breakthrough

In my coaching I show clients to ‘localize’ their activities, before ’scheduling’ them.

Doing similar activities in one place in one go, and combining activities for time management leverage.

Alternatively said: ‘keep your socks in one place!, and set up personalized cock-pits’.

Similar activities (like putting on your left sock and your right sock) should be done at one time. It’s amazing how people understand this for socks, but miss it for things like phone calls, or going through mail, or shopping.

Do similar activities together in one time management ‘mini-day’, arrange to do all the weeks shopping (including clothes, food, electrical items, presents, etc) on the same visit to the shops.

Ok, the cock-pit analogy. Well the visual is that of an airplane cock-pit, with hundreds of lights, buttons, dials, and knobs, to give the pilot efficient control and access to all he might need, even when things get a little rough.

We perhaps do not need all areas of our life arranged so intricately for effective time management, but in general, work out ways to save time, or make best use of time, by having things where you need them.

Do you have an envelope opener next to where you open your mail?
Do you have a clutter free desk draw for those things you often want access to whilst at your desk? Like headset for computer conversation, telephone, current frequently referred to books, stationery case.

Some of my clients initially feel this is pedantic. Consider that being tightly efficient with the locations and proximity of items and tools you use regularly can actually get you working on tasks nearly twice as fast. This means a massive increase in time management efficiency.

Every room should be so arranged: the bathroom should be ready for efficient use, and you could take it that much further by having speakers in there so you can listen to talking CDs to learn something whilst you shave and wash in the morning. Now that’s my kind of time management vision.

The kitchen too could have speakers. I’ve got worksheets for vocal exercises and physical exercises that I often do whilst I cook!

Personalise your environment, be aware of optimizing your time management by arranging things just how you like and want them.

What’s the worse area (cock-pit) you’ve got set up right now?

How much time would it take to get a couple of key areas better organized?

What’s the best areas right now?

How can you localize activities and tasks for your time management?

Spending genuine hard-nose thinking time on this, and being open to the possibilities can and will significantly enhance your time management.

4 Crucial Ingredients every Event Planner needs to know before hiring Live Music for a Corporate Party

4 Crucial Ingredients every Event Planner needs to
know before hiring Live Music for a Corporate Party

Written by Dan Gillogly . President of Glo Glee Music, Inc.

Guaranteed! You’ll Look Good B’cuz We Sound Good!

Involving live music into any corporate event is not as
easy as it seems. Besides deciding on the band, there are
4 aspects you must consider in order to have a hope of having
a successful event. They are, in the order of importance:

1) Venue

2) Agents

3) Technical Set Up

4) Band Character

In a moment I’ll tell you the details of the crucial
issues that can aggravate and potentially ruin an otherwise
beautifully accomplished occasion. It will just take a few
minutes, but as you read this page, more and more, you will
start to feel better and better about hiring live music for
your next corporate or social event. Most importantly is . . .
. .

Venue Selection

As an event planner, your ability to keep numerous things
in mind when hiring musicians. Selection of the perfect venue
is the first ingredient you will need. This ability alone may
distinguish you as a professionals in an industry filled with
amateurs. When choosing the venue, be certain the room size is
in proportion with the number of guests who will be attending.

I got into this business as a singing piano player. When I
am performing I need to connect with the audience. If the room
size is proportionate to the crowd size, I can do my job
successfully. If the room is too big and there are not enough
warm bodies in attendance, the audience will feel too
intimidated to approach the band. When you keep the band close
enough to your guests will feel comfortable enough to interact
with the musicians and vice versa.

Have you noticed yet that keeping the venue small so the
band can be close to your guests will increase your chances of
having a successful event? Depending on the act, you can leave
a little dance floor in front of the band. But all in all, keep
the crowd near the band and allow the band to be an integral
part of your event.

I have frequently worked with party planners who are
clueless when it comes to what size stage is needed for a
band.

“If you fail to plan ahead, then you are planning ahead
to fail.”

Here are the stage specs for various sized bands:

3 Piece - 8 feet by 16 feet

5 Piece - 16 feet by 24 feet

12 Piece - 16 feet by 32 feet

With the is newly acquired information, experienced event
planners will always prefer to go with a room with a stage
rather than just placing the band on the same level as
attendees. Proper planning for stage requirements avoids major
headaches the day of the show. Also, having the band on a stage
allows them to be seen by everyone even by the people in back.

When selecting the venue, you will also need to keep in
mind the acoustics of the room. High ceilings and flat walls
with lots of windows and no curtains to muffle the sound are
not optimal environments for bands. Work with an experienced
sound person to mix the band and equalize the room and
eliminate feedback.

Agents

There are only a handful of very few good
professional bands anymore. If you don’t know a good
booking agent, you will be hard pressed to find them. A good
agent will be the one to help you thru the minefield of
mediocre, amateurs with amps that have no volume control knobs.
As an event planner you need to figure out your event theme and
then contact a talent booking agency to see if there are bands
that fit.

The most popular bands play a wide variety of styles. A
good group of musicians knows songs from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s
and ’90s. Frank Sinatra has never gone out of style. So make
sure the band plays what we call “Jazz Standards”. Depending
on your event and your geographical location, it is either
“Country Music is King!” or “Classic Rock Rules!”. Know your
demographics before hiring a band.

As with any vendor, you get what you pay for. Let’s talk
about budget. I wonder, even as you continue to read this
report, if you realize the amount of time a band puts in before
receiving a paycheck to practicing their instruments, learning
and memorizing repertoire and coordinating lights and
choreography. Most bands require anywhere from $1,200 to
$45,000 per gig. Experienced booking agents will be able to
place the right band for the party. With any event, experience
wins every time. Ask for references and testimonials.

Technical Set Up

Once your musicians are booked, you now need to cover
logistics. Tech setup includes the movement and placement of
equipment and sound checks. Bands usually bring their own
equipment. Amplifiers, instruments, a PA system for vocals,
lighting towers all the way down to carpet for the drums need
to be set up and placed and checked and moved and double
checked again. Allow enough time for all of these details to be
adequately addressed well before show time. Because it is not
IF something goes wrong, it’s WHEN something goes wrong.

And it always does with a band. Give them enough time to fix
it.

Sound check must take place no later than 3 hours before
the performance start time. Load in should occur 1 or 2 hours
before that. The sound check should take no more than an hour,
and after that, let the band go back to their rooms, freshen
up, take a nap, grab a meal. They should return NO LATER than
30 minutes before their performance.

Band Character

Musicians have traditionally had a reputation for being
evil practitioners of any number of very colorful vices. It has
been my experience, however, that we are no different than any
other industry be it stock brokers, medical personnel or city
workers.

Use these simple rules and you will notice you can keep
any group of performers in line.

- Band members should not eat any food in buffet lines or
inside the ballroom area. They should have a separate area or a
“Greenroom” where they can eat, drink, warm up their vocal
cords, stretch out and generally prepare for the gig.

- During a performance, bands should not consume alcohol
or smoke. If they can’t wait a few hours to partake of their
favorite libation, fire them on the spot. You will avoid
headaches and embarrassment down the road. In addition, you
will get the reputation you will not tolerate any such
behavior. Trust me. Word will get out you are a professional
party planner.

Finally, remember: Treating musicians with dignity and
respect translates into a happy band which brings you happy
clients and guests who enjoy the entire event no matter
what the occasion.

You are now armed with the 4 seriously critical ingredients
for success that you did not have before. If you have learned
this information through the school of hard knocks, you can
feel assured that you are a true professional.

Now picture the night of the event. Following dinner (if
it is served), lights should be dimmed, the band is introduced,
they hit the first chords and the excitement ripples through
the room. People move towards the dance floor and the smiles
appear on everyone in the room. Why? Because you did your job
and provided an exquisite ingredient that every corporate party
needs: Live Music.

Helen’s Fantastic Fishcake Recipe

Homemade Fishcakes - simple as simple gets. This makes 8 good sized fish cakes

Put 4 large baked potatos in the oven, gas mark 220. Rub sea salt into the skins and then turn the potatoes every 20 mins or so. They will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

When the potatos are nearly ready, get a baking tray and place foil down - leave enough so you can wrap the fish up!

Place 3 salmon fillets and 2 cod fillets onto the tray. Sqeeze a little lemon and drizzle a little white wine if you have any! Wrap the fish up and cook for 12-15 minutes or untill cooked. Please low down the oven as opposed to the top where the potatoes should be

Once cooked take the potatoes and fish out. Leave both to cool.

Flake the fish and the inside of the potato into a bowl, add salt, pepper and a few knobs of butter.

Lightly blend the mixture, but be carefully not to mash! Add about 2 handfuls of finely chopped spring onions and about 1 handfull of finely chopped parsley.

Once all the mixture is together, put in a fridge and leave for a few hours untill chilled.

Once chilled you can make the mixture into round patty shapes and again leave to chill for at least half an hour

You then have 2 options

Option 1 - lightly dust in seasoned flour (sale & pepper) flour and fry straight away

OR

Option 2 - dust in flour, then in eff then in breadcrumbs. Dont buy shopped breadcrumbs use some bread toast it and crunch up to make your own crumbs but remember season them!

Serve with a wedge of lemon and salad with perhaps a oil and balsamic reduction dressing

Check Your Water Heater (mt driscoll)

Filed under: Texas Knobs N' Things — Admin @ 3:25 pm

More info…
When was the last time you checked your water heater? Keep your water heater in peak form by draining a quart of water from the tank four times a year. If you detect a leak, it usually means rusting through the bottom of the storage tank and you’ll want to call a pro in.

Get A Buyer’s Attention - Top 10 Secrets To Winning First Impressions

Just like making a first impression is important when meeting someone for the first time, making a good first impression on a prospective buyer is just as important to giving your house the best chance of being sold.

What is a first impression when it comes to your house?

When a prospect first drives by your neighborhood and sees your house, that is a first impression. When a prospect arrives at your house for the first time for an appointment after seeing your ad in the paper, that is a first impression.

What is a winning first impression then?

A winning first impression is the difference between whether a prospective buyer wants to follow up and make an appointment to see your house or not after driving by for the first time. A winning first impression is also the difference between whether a prospective buyer really wants to see the rest of your house after arriving for an appointment or just going through the motions and being polite.

How do you give your house that winning first impression?

Here are the top 10 things you should consider:

1) Start with looking at the exterior of your house objectively rather than as your own home. Often we are willing to overlook problems areas with our house simply because as our home, we have gotten accustomed with the way it looks.

2) Stand where a prospective buyer would park when they first drive by and look at the house. Do this both during the day and the evening. What does the house look like?

3) Similary stand where a prospective buyer would walk up to the house when they arrive at the house. Do this also during the day and the evening.

4) For both (2) and (3), take note of what are the strengths of the house and see where you can enhance them more.

5) Similarly for both (2) and (3), take note of what are the weaknesses of the house and see where you can minimize or hide them more.

6) Keep the exterior clean and tidy. This includes: getting rid of any signs of mold, keeping the lawn cut and free of any tools and toys, keeping the trees and bushes trimmed so that they don’t hide the house, edging the sidewalks, removing any grass growth between contrete or bricks, cleaning the gutters, cleaning the deck and patio, washing the windows, painting any parts of the exterior of the house that need repainting.

7) Enhance the look of the house in the evening with proper lighting. This includes: running low voltage lighting along the walkway, driveway, sidewalk, walkway, and near any landscaped areas. This also includes: adding or upgrading any lamps or light fixtures that are attached to the house or that may be on the lawn.

8) Enhance the look of the house during the day with proper landscaping. This includes: keep the lawn cut and clean, adding flower beds, rock gardens, trees and bushes, fixtures, and maybe even waterfalls. Use your imagination.

9) Change the door knobs and accessories in the entrance. Maybe even consider changing the front door or entrance area.

10) And last, don’t leave anything to the imagination for the prospective buyer. Most prospective buyers are busy enough and would rather look at another house.

Having a winning first impression with the house does not necessarily mean always that you need to have a big budget for the job. Taking into account some of the ideas presented, sometimes a little imagination and hard work will go a long way in giving your house that winning first impression and a better chance of being sold.

Money-Saving Household Tips #4

There are hundreds of household tips for you to use around the house that will save you loads of money. The best part is, you already have most of the ingredients for them lying around your house! Listed below are just a few of these great tips:

*Cornstarch can be used instead of baby powder. It is cheaper and less likely to cause diaper rash.

*Use half a fabric softener sheet in the dryer rather than a whole one. Or to save on your utilities bill, hang your clothes to dry.

*Consolidate your errands so you do not have to make several trips.

*Ask insurance companies about discounts to non-smokers, part-time drivers, groups? insurance rates, etc. Do not buy insurance you do not need.

*Do your own tax returns if possible and do not be late in filing it.

*Save on minor repair/maintenance bills for your car by doing it yourself or taking it to your local trade school. They usually just charge for parts, not labor.

*If you need to see a doctor, ask for samples since s/he carries a large assortment of products (compliments of the drug companies).

*Get a library card to borrow books, music and movies.

*Got a loose screw? Dip it in glue or putty before you screw it back on. A wooden match can also be placed in the hole to provide more grip for the screw. You can also wrap a few strands of steel wool around the threads before you put the screw back in.

*If you have a rusted bolt, try applying a cloth soaked in any carbonated beverage, or use a couple of drops of ammonia to loosen it. Make sure you coat it with petroleum jelly to prevent more rusting before you screw it back on.

*To prevent rust on your tools, place chalk, charcoal or mothballs in your toolbox to attract moisture.

*Get a good home repair manual. If you still decide not to do it yourself, you will be better prepared when you negotiate with the contractor.

*Unless the task is dangerous, try to do minor repairs and maintenance yourself first.

*Do not buy appliance service contracts or extended warranties (that applies to cars too). Sales persons usually get a commission for it so do not be surprised if they try to give you a sales pitch.

*Do not assume that just because an appliance is broken, it must be replaced. Sometimes all it needs is a minor repair or a new part.

*Rub petroleum jelly on the hinges and doorknobs before you paint a door. If you get paint on them, they will wipe off easily.

*If your paintbrushes have hardened, simmer in full-strength vinegar and remove the softened paint with a wire comb or brush. After cleaning your paintbrush, a few drops of oil worked into the bristles will leave the brush soft and ready to use.

*Punch a few holes on the rim of the paint can to stop paint from dripping on the outside of the can. When the brush is wiped on the edge, the paint goes back into the can. Once the lid is put back on, it will cover the holes to prevent it from drying.

*Make a note of your paint color name and number, and the date when you painted the room and tape it to the back of your switch plate. When it is time to repaint, you will have an easy reference to match the same paint color.

*To remove oil or enamel paint from your hands, rub on paste floor wax and then wash with soap and warm water. It is easier on the skin than paint remover and there is no odor.

*Use toothpaste to fill up those small nail holes in your drywall.

*Keep instructions, receipts, warranty cards, etc. for appliances and equipment in a file folder specified for that purpose.

*When disassembling something with many small parts, use an empty egg carton to put the parts in. Number each compartment in the order you place the parts in and when it is time to put it back together, just go in reverse order.

*To prevent a paint can from tipping over, cut out a circle on the side of an old cereal box and place the paint can inside. This will also catch your paint drippings.

*Save your UPC codes from empty packages of food and mark the name of the product on the back. Next time there’s a contest that requires a proof-of-purchase, you have it on hand.

*Wear your old clothes for painting or other renovation projects. Then when it is no longer wearable, cut it up and use the scraps. Good for wiping dirty hands, buffing your shoes, polishing, etc.

Tips For Refacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Are your cabinets looking a little worn down and shabby? If so, you may want to revamp the look of your kitchen cabinets by resurfacing them. Refacing your kitchen cabinets is a cost effective way to give them a new appearance. Instead of replacing the entire structure, you can simply replace the surface. Refacing your cabinets will offer a new look for your room and greatly improve the durability of your cabinets. You will be adding years of life to your cabinetry.

Generally, a refacing or resurfacing project will be performed by a professional. The entire project involves replacing the cabinet drawer fronts and doors, as well as adding a new veneer to the base cabinet. The cost will depend on type of wood you want. Prices can range from $4000 to over $10,000. The amount of time it takes to complete the project will also vary. Some projects can be finished in as little as 2 days while others can take up to a week. It usually depends on how large of a kitchen you have.

Refacing your cabinets is a wonderful alternative to replacing them; however, you must make sure that your cabinets are still in good condition first. If the structure of your existing cabinets is in poor condition then you will not benefit from resurfacing them because in time they will need to be replaced anyways. Also, keep in mind that your current layout will not be changed when you resurface so if you are looking for a new layout then you may want to redesign and replace your cabinets all together.

The alternative to refacing your cabinets is to refinish them. Refinishing your cabinets involves painting or staining them. Refinishing your cabinets can prove to be the most cost-effective option, and also offer the best return on your investment. Painting your cabinets is the easiest and least expensive way to create a new fresh look. If you happen to be crafty with your hands then you may be able to save yourself even more money by painting your cabinets yourself, either freehand or by using stencils. Once you finish putting a new layer of paint on, all you have to do is add new drawer pulls and knobs. This entire project can be done for as little as $500.

Bottom line, cabinets are one of the main focal points of a kitchen and for that reason it is very important to keep them looking good. If your current cabinets are starting to look worn down, but they are still sturdy and structurally sound then you may be able to give them a face-lift without spending all the money that you would have to on replacements. Rather than plan an expensive, total replacement of cabinets, consider having your cabinets resurfaced at up to half the cost in material and labor.

Why You Should Use Kitchen Design Software When Planning Your New Kitchen

When designing your new kitchen no longer do you have to rely on pen and paper instead there are a number of different kitchen design software programs that you could easily utilize. These software programs allow you to design your own kitchen in the comfort of your own home and then provide you with a virtual look of how the completed project will be.

Many of the kitchen design software programs that are now available allow you to add colour, lighting, furniture and anything that you need to design what you would like. Also the best part about these programs is that they usually have catalog products from manufacturers and designers which you are able to choose from and include in your design. There is in fact some software programs which have been particularly made for designing kitchens with such as 20-20 Design, Kitchen Design Software and AutoKitchen Pro.

However 20-20 Design is now recognized worldwide and this program allows you full colour, three dimensional and photo like renderings and which allows designers to achieve realistic kitchen environments from every angle possible with the added possibility to zoom in on any section of the kitchen that they want.

The benefit of having a kitchen design software program is that you lets you plan and design your kitchen before you begin building it. Such software will let you choose the type of kitchen furniture, fittings and fixtures (sinks etc.,) as well as flooring that you may require for your kitchen. The benefit also allows the user of the program to be able to visualize the kitchen before the building process begins.

Another good software program to consider is AutoKitchen Pro which is a stand alone program and includes the Auto CAD OEM engine. This software includes universal cabinet catalogs along with a catalog editor which allows you to make alterations to the height, materials, cabinet frames and other features of any cabinets that you are interested in. This software programs has over 150 cabinet door styles as well as more than 100 knobs and handles in it.

With any kitchen design software that you use it is meant to give you an idea of how your kitchen will look if you were to choose a certain colour, fittings and appliances. Plus it saves you money as you will be able to see what the finished kitchen will look like prior to you actually building it. You can avoid costly mistakes that you might make if you were to try to piece the kitchen together as you go. Even for the smallest of kitchen jobs, planning ahead of time can really save you and can insure you get a kitchen that looks exactly the way you want it to.

Children’s Furniture Buyers Guide

Investing in a good quality kid?s furniture is important to the growth, comfort and wellbeing of a child. The following are tips that may be considered before investing in your child?s furniture:

Pre-Planning. Before buying kids? furniture, involve your child in computing a list of specific details that serve their furniture desires, needs and dislikes. Consider the possibility of having more shelves for books, homework area or sleeping specific for friends.

Consider the styles. Nowadays, common furnishings in the children?s room are not only scaled to perfect size but it?s offered in an array of contemporary styles that append to your child?s favorite themes and activities.

Decoration. Decide on what color is desirable and what theme the color will add on to the room. Let the child choose these adornments so that they will enjoy their unique room.

Safety. It is important when selecting children?s furniture to take note of any safety hazards. Check these carefully as injurious accidents may be prompt to occur unexpectedly. Avoid pieces of furniture with pointed or rough edges. Be ware also of heavy lids that may slam down on unsuspecting playful little fingers.

Multiple functions. Buying kids? furniture that is (are) functionally multifarious will maximize floor space and make it easy for parents to provide the right tools for sleeping, studying and storage for their kids thereby compounding the child?s interests in one room.

Easy to use and clean. Think about kids? furniture that is (are) easy to clean on the surface and also easy to use particularly the knobs and handles.

Consider the antiques. Pieces of furniture that have endured the test of time for hundreds of years often do so because they?re solid and well made. Kids who have grown around fine furniture usually develop respect for it.

(Iron art knob) Remove Heavy Snow from Roof

Filed under: Texas Knobs N' Things — Admin @ 12:05 am

More info…
Removing heavy snow from your roof can prevent costly water damage to your roof, walls and ceilings. But unless you can do it safely, don’t jeopardize your well-being by trying to remove it yourself. Leave it to a professional.

Adding a Wall Mural to Your Home Office

It should come as no surprise that the functionality of your home office is paramount to your small business success. A purposefully and beautifully appointed home office is inviting to your senses and can stimulate productivity as well. The addition of a Wall Mural is an easy, cost-effective, and fun decorating idea.

If you think about it, decorating your home office can seem a bit daunting. Images of papers, gadgets, wires, and Post-It notes galore strewn about are not exactly the most relished or relaxing; yet, this is precisely what many home offices have fallen victim to.

Start out by setting aside a good chunk of time to tweak your organization skills.
De-cluttering your room is the best place to start. A cluttered office is not conducive to productivity, by the way. As well, de-cluttering is the simplest and most effective way to create an immediate feeling of calm. It really doesn?t take all that much time (unless you are a real pack rat), and your de-cluttering thereafter should only take five to ten minutes a day.

Once your room is no longer a mess, give it a thorough cleaning. Don?t forget to dust the walls, ceiling, light fixtures, and electronics (keyboards can get really gross!) in addition to your usual cleaning regimen. Before you finish, don?t forget to wipe down phones, computer mice, keyboards, doorknobs, and anything else you handle frequently with antibacterial wipes. Now you can concentrate on creating a more appealing workspace.

A Wall Mural is the perfect choice for adding visual appeal to an otherwise blank or uninteresting wall. Opt for a feast for the eyes while waiting for that fax or email. This is definitely preferable and less nerve-wracking than staring into blank space. Contemplating a beautiful depiction of a serene Japanese temple or mountain stream can give you a mental boost during those annoying down times (such as listening to canned music while waiting for a human to pick up the line) in your typical working day.

Wall Murals are easy to install or, if you choose, they can be installed professionally. The nice thing about the addition of a Wall Mural is that it immediately transforms the entire look of the home office. This alone accomplishes the bulk of the redecorating project, so it is really both cost and time-effective.

Visit the gallery of Wall Murals for a large selection of stunning natural photographic scenes. Choose from cityscapes, mountainscapes, seascapes, desertscapes, natural and man made wonders, such as the Taj Mahal, and more. There is definitely something for everyone in this gallery.

Once your Wall Mural is installed, use the scene as a focal point for your home office decorating. Visit brand name discount stores like Home Goods, TJMaxx, and Marshall?s. Here you can find lamps, desk accessories, clocks, faux plants, and other items that are interesting and complimentary without breaking your budget.

Halogen Lighting - New Developments

Halogen Lighting - New Developments

Halogen lamps have now been around for a number of years. First invented in the late 1950s their increased popularity and widespread usage in multiple applications has seen production costs, and consequently prices, fall dramatically in recent years.

As the number of suppliers offering Tungsten Halogen lamps increases, and competition within the market sector intensifies, manufacturers are now seeking to gain competitive advantage through innovations in lamp technology.

Lamp Life
This was the first area in which engineers aimed to make improvements. Due to the luminous properties of Halogen lighting it is used in many retail environments in luminaries which can be hard to access. For this reason manufacturers wanted to offer a lamp which was not only more efficient but required less user maintenance. Most Mr16 Halogen lamps (those typically used in domestic situations) of just a few years ago lasted on average 2,500 hours. There are Halogen lamps now on the market that can boast a 10,000 hour life.

Energy Savers
The largest lighting expense is energy cost. General Electric, the inventors of the very first halogen lamp, sought to offer customers tangible cost benefits when in 2005 they introduced the GE Precise? IR Energy Saving MR16 halogen lamp. Replacing a standard 50 watt MR16 with a 37 watt Precise? IR will reduce energy consumption by 26%. It’s rated for 4,000 hours of life and is ideal for heat-sensitive applications.

UV filter Technology
UV Filter technology prevents unwanted UV components from being emitted in the light produced by halogen lamps. It is particularly effective in restricting the most harmful high energy UV-B and UV-C radiation, but also lessens the effects of low energy UV-A. It involves the ‘doping’ of the quartz envelope, which is enriched with UV absorbent material.

IRC Technology
Halogen IRC lamps represent one of the latest developments in halogen technology. Using an InfraRed Coating on the outside of the lamp, technicians improved luminous efficacy. This is due to the principle of ‘thermal recovery’, in which the heat, rather than dissipating, is reflected back onto the filament. The filament thus reaches operating temperature using less power.

Bulb Pinch Technology
This is a new manufacturing method applied to mains halogen lamps in which the filament is fixed in place within the envelope using glass knobs. As such they are not ‘free floating’, and able to withstand vibrations are more robust.
Halogen lamps in a low voltage environment have a consequently higher current and thus operate at higher temperatures. The filaments are therefore much thicker and do not require ‘pinch technology’.

Continual research and development by the leading manufacturers, including Osram, GE, Sylvania and Philips is leading to better quality, longer lasting, more efficient and safer lamps. This is fantastic news consumers, designers and lighting architects.

Please see my other articles for more information on Halogen lighting

Having feelings that you must perform rituals such as these over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Overview

Do you wipe off the doorknobs in your home each time someone touches them? Or do you consistently go to great lengths to avoid walking on sidewalk cracks? Or, worried that you might cause a fire, do you repeatedly check to see that you’ve turned off the stove? Having feelings that you must perform rituals such as these over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, your ritual behaviors may literally take over your life. You have distressing, unwanted thoughts or images that don’t make sense to you. These thoughts or images keep coming back despite your efforts to resist them. You may strive to hide your condition from friends and co-workers for fear of being labeled crazy.

Doctors once believed that obsessive-compulsive disorder was a rare condition, but it’s now known to be more common than other mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. More than 3 million Americans have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder doesn’t affect just adults. The disorder often begins during adolescence or early childhood. About one-third to one-half of adult cases begin in childhood.
Although there’s no cure for obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatments can help you get the disorder under control.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder include:

Obsessions

These are recurrent, persistent, unwanted ideas, thoughts or impulses that you experience involuntarily and that appear to be senseless. They commonly intrude when you’re trying to think of or do other things. Common obsessions include:

 Fear of dirt or contamination
 Concern with order, symmetry and exactness
 Constantly thinking about certain sounds, images, words or numbers
 Fear of harming a family member or friend
 Fear of thinking evil or sinful thoughts
Compulsions

These are repetitive behaviors that you’re driven to perform regularly to combat your obsessions, even though to you — and to others — they may seem irrational. You may even make up “rules” to follow that help control the anxiety you feel when having obsessive thoughts. Typical compulsions include:
 Excessive hand washing
 Repeatedly checking that doors are locked and appliances are turned off
 Arranging items in a precise order
 Repeatedly counting to the same number
 Touching certain objects a precise number of times

When you perform these rituals, you may feel some relief from anxiety, but not for long. Soon your discomfort returns, and you feel compelled to repeat your behaviors.

If you have an obsessive-compulsive disorder, you probably know that your repetitive thoughts and behaviors are irrational and senseless, but you can’t free yourself from them. You may be able to control unwanted behaviors for a while, but your resistance may weaken after months or years of struggle. Eventually, your rituals may take up more and more of your day, making it virtually impossible to lead a normal life.

There’s a difference between being a perfectionist and having obsessive-compulsive disorder. Perhaps you get all of your work done a week ahead of schedule, you compete at sports like a pro, and you keep the floors in your house so clean you could eat off them. That doesn’t mean you have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Instead, you may belong to a large group of people who are sometimes called compulsive. That just means you hold yourself to a very high standard of performance in all that you do. This behavior contributes to building your self-esteem and success. These are not the behaviors seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder interfere with everyday functioning.

Causes

Doctors don’t know the exact cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Some researchers theorize that its cause is biological, while others feel the disorder stems from learned behavior. Still others believe the cause of the disorder may be both biological and environmental factors. An insufficient level of serotonin, one of your brain’s chemical messengers, may contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Imaging studies that use positron emission tomography (PET) scans to compare the brains of people who have obsessive-compulsive disorder with the brains of those who don’t, show differences in brain-activity patterns. In addition, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder who take medications that enhance the action of serotonin often show great improvement.

Risk factors

Your risk of developing an obsessive-compulsive disorder is slightly higher if your parents or other family members have obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, researchers haven’t identified any genes responsible for obsessive-compulsive disorder. You may also have a biological predisposition to react strongly to stress. This reaction may, for some reason, trigger the intrusive thoughts, rituals and emotional distress characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

When to seek medical advice

Shame and embarrassment may keep you from seeking treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. But even if your rituals are deeply ingrained, treatments can help. If you suspect you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, see your doctor or a mental health professional.

What To Look For When You Buy A (lb brass) Digital Camera

Filed under: Texas Knobs N' Things — Admin @ 9:05 pm

What To Look For When You Buy A Digital Camera

The good news is that there are plenty of great digital cameras to choose from these days. The bad news is that there is an ever increasing array of types and models as well and it can all get very confusing very fast. So lets discuss some of the features that you can expect to look for as you shop.

Size is an important consideration to many when it comes to digital cameras, and even the subcompact category of cameras still packs a lot of punch for it’s size. You can expect to see resolution in many subcompacts on up to 7 megapixels, which should be more than enough to let you print sharp and clear photos on up to 11 X 14 in size. The only thing that you should be careful of with cameras that small is that the controls and knobs can almost be too small sometimes and be difficult to operate easily for some. That’s why it’s a good idea to physically try out a subcompact before actually purchasing it to make sure that it will be easy and simple to use in spite of it’s small dimensions.

Another important consideration when you buy a digital camera is it’s speed, both when it firsts starts up and when you press the shutter. Film cameras come on instantly and are ready to fire, but digital cameras have to take some time to power up and get ready. In some models it can even take several seconds to take your first picture, which means that you could easily lose some photo opportunities due to your camera not being able to power up on time. So check the startup time for each camera that you look at, and select those that have the quickest power up cycle.

The other speed issue that can come into play is the time lag between the moment when you press the shutter and the actual moment when the picture is taken. In some digital cameras the shutter lag can take almost a full second, which is all dead time that prevents you from taking other photos. In some fast action sequences you could be missing some very important shots, so try to get a camera that reduces the shutter lag under half a second if possible.

If you like to have more exposure control than a fully automatic camera offers you can find some limited manual features on the subcompact and compact digital cameras, but in general the more manual controls you want, the larger camera you will need to buy. In fact, there are several advanced digital cameras that offer manual controls that rival those found in a digital single lens reflex camera, but in order to get those extra features you will need to spend more money and the weight and size will also go up at the same time.

As with many consumer electronics products, there are tradeoffs to make when you select models from different camera classes, but hopefully the tips given above can help you choose and buy a digital camera that will fit you best.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Symptoms, Tests and Treatments

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a devastating injury that affects more than 8 million people in the United States and continues to increase each and every year.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of many repetitive strain injuries (RSI?s) that are everywhere; homes, offices, assembly lines, grocery stores, book clubs, construction sites, dental offices, everywhere! Because carpal tunnel syndrome is so commonplace, and its effects so devastating, it is important to be knowledgeable of how it occurs, what its symptoms are, the testing methods used and what treatment options are available, as the prevention of any injury, especially carpal tunnel, begins with education.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a disorder affecting the median nerve, which supplies function to the thumb, index, middle and one half of the ring finger. Usually the symptoms are most prevalent in the thumb, index and middle fingers (Sometimes one-half of the ring finger) and include numbness, tingling, paresthesia (pins and needles), pain and tightness in the front of the hand, wrist and forearm. These symptoms do not have to occur simultaneously, and may only affect one finger one day and then three fingers a few days later.

If a doctor provides a carpal tunnel diagnoses and the symptoms are in the ring and little fingers, it is NOT carpal tunnel syndrome! The ulnar nerve, not the median nerve, supplies function to the ring and little finger. Repetitive strain disorders affecting these two fingers are usually either Guyon?s syndrome, entrapment of the ulnar nerve in the guyon?s canal at the wrist junction, or cubital tunnel syndrome, entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow junction. This is a common mistake made by many, many physicians and is completely inexcusable as they often recommend surgery for the patient, causing the patient to undergo an unnecessary procedure, and what makes it worse, for the wrong disorder!

If symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome do arise, doctors will recommend that a nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test or an Electromoyogram (EMG) be performed to see if carpal tunnel syndrome truly exists. These tests are often painful to the individual being tested, very expensive, and often give false positives and false negatives. This is why it is recommended that manual carpal tunnel tests be performed in order to obtain a more accurate (and much cheaper) diagnosis. Manual carpal tunnel tests take no longer than 10 minutes, have a high accuracy rate, are painless and are very cheap in comparison to the NCV and EMG tests.

The recommended manual carpal tunnel tests consist of the following:

? Phalen?s Test: The wrist is flexed for 30 to 60 seconds in order to compress the median nerve and duplicate/increase the symptoms.

? Reverse Phalen?s Test: The wrist is extended for 30 to 60 seconds in order to stretch the median nerve and duplicate/increase the symptoms. Stretching the median nerve if it is already impinged will duplicate/increase the symptoms if a patient has carpal tunnel syndrome.

? Tinnel Sign: Tapping directly over the median nerve at the wrist junction will cause carpal tunnel symptoms to exhibit themselves.

? Compression Test: Direct pressure is applied over the location of the median nerve for 30-60 seconds to see if carpal tunnel symptoms are exhibited.

If a positive diagnosis comes back, most doctors will push for surgery, a procedure that has a terrible success rate and is to only be performed as a last resort once all other conservative treatment methods have been utilized. Conservative therapy is the key to successfully recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome and obtaining not only short-term but long-term relief as well. The following is a list of conservative treatments that should be utilized in order to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome from developing, but also rehabilitating carpal tunnel syndrome after it is already present.

? Ergonomics: Utilize proper ergonomic tools and equipment when working.

? Breaks: Take short breaks every 30 minutes when working in order to help reduce excessive strain on the hands.

? Stretches: Stretch the muscles that ?close? the hands as these are the muscles that are exercised all day long in activities such as typing, writing, gripping a steering wheel, using a computer mouse, carrying groceries and everything else that is done day in and day out. When a muscle is involved in exercise, it becomes shorter, therefore it needs to be stretched and lengthened both during and after the exercises are completed. (End of day)

? Exercises: Exercise and strengthen the muscles that are used to ?open? the hands, as these muscles do not receive much direct stimuli / exercise. (i.e. People do not turn doorknobs, hold things, type, use a computer mouse or lift things with the backs of their hands.)

The information provided above reveals how carpal tunnel syndrome occurs, what its symptoms are, the testing methods most commonly used and the best conservative treatment options that are used to thwart its existence.

It is very important for individuals to become well acquainted with the proper information and tools in order to maintain and increase their level of health and productivity. It is also important for people to speak to their doctors regarding their health concerns, and if someone is involved in an occupation that is considered high-risk for carpal tunnel, they should discuss this with their physician, but is even more critical that people become self educated as no one can take care of you better than ?YOU?!

Baby Clothes Home Display

To add a touch of heritage to a child’s room, why not display some of their own baby clothing. These little memories of made of cloth look great on a display hanging rack made for a tabletop or dresser. As the child grows older they will love to use their own clothes for their dolls to play dress up. To make your own display rack, these are the things you will need:
* 2 porch spindles
* scrap wood
* hanging rod (for a closet; a wooden dowel will also serve)
* screws
* drill with screw bit
* scrap fabric
* spray adhesive
* 2 rosettes (used for closet bars)
* wood glue
* 2 decorative knobs
* paint (color is your choice; you can also use a wood stain if the wood is nude)
Take the porch spindles that you might have purchased at Home Depot or somewhere similar and paint them whatever color you wish, keeping in mind the colors of your child’s room or furniture. Then, cut two pieces of wood for the base of the rack and the top. The size depends on the size of rack you wish to build. To hold three or for garments, the base should probably be about 18×8 inches. Set aside the top piece for now. Fasten the spindles to the base using screws through the bottom of the base. To make sure that the base will not scratch your furniture, attach a piece of fabric to the bottom with adhesive. Sit the rack upright and screw on the rosettes. Now place the bar on the rosettes as you wood in a normal closet. Take the top piece of wood and fasten it to the spindles with screws. Lastly, you can glue the knobs on top of the rack as decoration. Of course you can be creative and pick any decorative items you wish.
Now you have made a fun new display rack for your children’s clothes. Place your kid’s clothes on the rod using baby clothes hangers, and the project is complete (wooden hangers may be the most decorative). Perhaps you will keep it in their room or perhaps you want it for your own. It quite possibly will become a family relic that will go on for generations.

Tips For Preparing Your House For Sale

When acting as your own real estate agent, it is imperative that you cover all bases adequately.

(there is a free ebook: 101 Tips For Selling Your House, for you to download, that gives you plenty of tips for preparing your home for sale, from a link at the bottom of this page).

You must have a for sale by owner home that is in excellent condition and ready to be shown to potential buyers.

It is not difficult to prepare your for sale by owner home for show but it does require proper planning and a little bit of work on your part to ensure success.

The outside of your for sale by owner home is the first thing potential buyers will see so it is very important to make sure it is clean and attractive.

?Curb appeal,? or the way your home looks from the outside, is what attracts potential buyers so if you spruce it up a bit, they will want to view the inside of the for sale by owner home.

A neatly manicured and well-kept lawn implicitly signifies a well maintained for sale by owner home. You should make a weekly habit of cutting your lawn while your home is on display for sale. Be sure to rake leaves and to sweep the sidewalks on the weekends when your house is to be shown.

If you have shrubs and or trees, remove debris and dead limbs to make them more presentable. It is a nice touch to plant extra flowers for color or to add potted flowers to lighten up the landscaping.

If fences are in ill repair or need work, repair them and touch them up with stain or with paint. Put away lawn equipment, children?s? toys, and any other outdoor items.

Keep large pets with neighbors so they do not interfere with the showing of your for sale by owner home.

The inside of your for sale by owner home is next on the list to make presentable for showing. It has been proven that people buy homes that appear spacious, clean, and solid.

Dark colors and clutter turn off most buyers, this means you must get rid of everything that you can possibly live without.

A good rule of thumb is this, if you cannot see your baseboard, the room is probably very cluttered.

To get rid of unnecessary things you may have, you may donate them to a charity or have a garage sale. The larger items that you must keep can be placed in storage.

If you will be painting your interior, use white or an off-white paint. You should also replace your light bulbs with brighter, higher wattage bulbs. Again, the look you are going for is bright and spacious. Be sure to clean everything thoroughly including carpets and mirrored surfaces.

Clean the oven and all appliances and be sure to polish any chrome fixtures. Be especially particular about ridding your home of any odors such as from smoke or from pets.

Fix any loose doorknobs, repair any broken windowpanes or leaky windowsills. Be sure any light fixtures are secure and in good repair. Also, be sure to repair any leaky pipes and to reapply caulk as needed.

These general tips will get you started on preparing your for sale by owner home for show. It is a good practice to view the for sale by owner home as though you are the buyer and to be particularly hard on yourself so a potential buyer won?t have to be.

If you are worried that you may overlook something, it won?t hurt to get a friend or neighbor to do a walk thru of the home and to critique your efforts. This will ensure a complete and thorough preparation and will boost the appeal of your home.

If you follow these tips you should have no trouble in selling your house.

Planning To Get New Drawer Pulls

You have just got some new furniture made in your house or have renovated the old one. Obviously there are drawers and cabinets in it. Now, without a knob you possible can’t open the drawers. You need some knobs and these knobs are called drawer pulls. They help you to pull open the drawer. There are various types of pulls available in the market. You can put drawer pulls to multiple uses. If you visit some older homes, you will find that the same drawer pulls are being used as deco and cabinet drawer pulls. Five or six decades ago, most homes used these pulls on kitchen cabinet drawers and cabinet doors, and in other rooms too on inbuilt cabinets.

There are antique drawer pulls which are of antique styles of handles and knobs. They remind you of olden days when the artistic craft of elegance was at its zenith. It may be a knob, handle, bin pull or hood. They are available in a wide range of finishes and styles and can be made of acrylic or glass, brass, porcelain, iron, nickel or chrome, ceramic, or other materials.

There are crystal and glass pulls for the discerning customer. The difference between crystal and glass is quite perceptible - crystal is glass with a higher lead content, which makes it heavier, reduces bubbles, and improves light refraction and clarity. Crystal pulls frequently have “cut” edges, which make it crisper in shape, while glass pulls have a softer-edged appearance and texture. There are many colors to choose from.

Then, there are pulls made of brass and oak also. You can get exclusive products in six usual finishes (lacquered brass, un-lacquered brass, oil-rubbed bronze, burnished antique brass, brushed nickel, and polished nickel).

There are figural antique pulls that are highly decorative. They have designs of the head of a dragon, lion, serpent, angel, or any other figurines. There may be scrolled patterns which extend to form the handle. These types of pulls attract the children very much.

It is easy to find a pull which truly matches with your period piece of furniture. It is an easy task. However, the task of choosing among so many attractive designs is quite a hard one. But you can also use antique drawer pulls to put a touch of elegant traditionalism to ultramodern cabinetry or furniture. New pulls will bring about a radical change in the appearance of a modern-day bedroom set. They are also a great way to give your kitchen cabinets a new look.

Thus, there is a huge variety to choose the one you find most appealing. There is one for everyone.

Rory Hawkins writes about “Planning to get New Drawer Pulls?” to visit it: drawer pulls, kids drawer pulls and antique drawer pulls.

Business Directories, T-Shirts and More: Unconventional Marketing Tips

One of the key ingredients for the success of a business is a strong marketing strategy. Unfortunately, in today’s world, marketing is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Many companies may realize that after a while, traditional marketing strategies are not effective for their business. These companies may want to consider unconventional marketing strategies. Following these few unconventional marketing tips could potentially jumpstart your business.

1. Get listings in business directories on the Web. This may seem obscure, but business directories on the web can help direct consumers to many businesses. Additionally, web sites are listed in categories and therefore associated with other businesses in the same category. Association with other sites in a niche can help draw visitors. These business directories can also help a web sites search ranking (because of the links to the business site). The higher a site is ranked, the more potential customers will visit.

2. Publicity stunts are great. “Publicity stunt” has been given a bad image by some, but this marketing technique can do wonders. Doing something that no one has ever done before and using the platform to market a business or product is ingenious. Publicity stunts can be very effective when they are creative enough and draw large crowds. Naturally, be careful that it is not too obvious of a publicity stunt, because it can backfire.

3. Make t-shirts for anyone and everyone! Making a cool t-shirt with the company logo is very effective advertising. When people see a t-shirt with a new company on it, or a word they have never seen before, they are likely to investigate further. Designing an interesting t-shirt is a must for this marketing strategy to work. Sell or give the t-shirt to your friends, family, and anyone else who wants them. People wearing the t-shirt become walking, talking billboards. That’s high quality advertising for a low price.

4. Door-hangers on doorknobs are great for specific areas. New restaurants often generate a large amount of traffic from putting ads on doorknobs. Most people look at their doorknobs and will subsequently notice your business. It is a great way to generate word of mouth in a new community that you are targeting.

5. Purchase word-of-mouth advertising. While a door-hanger can generate word-of-mouth, one way to guarantee discussion is to pay someone to walk around town talking about a specific business or product. This person is lively and will tell everyone about a new business. It may seem odd to think of some guy standing in an elevator saying “Have you been to the new store on Main Street?” but the results are very real. Word-of-mouth is how many companies grow, so why not jump start word-of-mouth about your business?

Dog Training Is Work Never Finished!

Just when I think I?ve got my dog Tuxcitto in control he gives me a demonstration that this well may be a life long pursuit. Tuxcitto is a Border Collie that has an uncanny learning capability. Not from my dog training skills but from observation. He watches everything that goes on around him.

And you never know when he?s going to add one and one to get two. Tuxcitto excels in obedience training when in sight or when his master is around. All I have to do is show him what I want him to do and then repeat it for a few days and he nails it after that. His ability to learn has always been obvious from the first day we brought him home.

But he also learns on his own. We have a good-sized front and back yard. And both dogs (I have an older female dog named Spoofy) know that they can do anything they want as long as it?s in our yard. We live in a small community and have lots of neighbors with dogs. From time to time one of them comes over for a visit.

No problem there except the temptation for our dogs to go run with the visiting dogs is too much to handle sometimes. Since most neighbors are dog owners this is not a problem. Except that my dogs are supposed to stay in my yard. That?s the rule. But we all know rules are made to be broken.

So one day a friend?s dog comes over to play and Tuxcitto follows him back to his yard. I happen to see this and go out and call Tuxcitto to come home. Tuxcitto comes back and everything is fine. I look back out a few minutes later and no Tuxcitto. So this time I call him home and bring him into the house.

If he can?t follow the rules, inside he goes. I go about my daily tasks and forget about it. Some time later I glance out the window and to my surprise, there?s Tuxcitto out in the front yard. And along with him are our two inside cats. Both these cats stay inside since they are both scared of their own shadows.

After a quick look around, I see that the back bedroom sliding glass door is open. Great, Tuxcitto has learned how to open the sliding glass door. This is not a good thing since we have several around our house. And although it?s no big deal for Tuxcitto to get out, the cats are a whole different issue. So I close the sliding glass door and go round up the animals and bring them inside.

Knowing that Tuxcitto will gladly give another demonstration of his new trick, I walk out another door to the backyard and wait. Within minutes I see him use his paws on the end of the door and pull it open. It took him about 5 seconds. Did I mention that he all ready knows how to open doors with doorknobs? He learned that trick in his second week at the house.

Now I have a challenge in that it?s much easier to teach Tuxcitto how to do something rather than teach him not to do something. So now I had to figure out a way to teach Tuxcitto not to open the door. One way that I?ve had some good success with is to demonstrate a certain result that he doesn?t like when he fails to follow my commands.

So I started with showing him the door, then telling him no. Tuxcitto understands no, so I believe he understood that the door was not something he was to go near in the future. But that doesn?t always work when I?m not present to reinforce the command.

So I then locked the door and both Tuxcitto and I went back to the other part of the house. I don?t know if he went back and tried to open the door that day but I believe he might have knowing his nature. A few days went by and I decided to test his memory.

I work out of a home office so the dogs and the cats generally follow me around all day. If I?m in the office they usually come in and lay down near me. If I go to the kitchen, or anywhere else, they follow me. So I set up the test by going back into the back bedroom and unlocking the door and going out into the back yard.

I came back in and did not lock the sliding glass door. I then went back to my office, with all in tow. So now I keep a close eye on Tuxcitto to see if he would make his move. I?ve made the mistake before of under estimating his intelligence and I?m not going there again.

Sure enough, after a little while he got up and looked at me, and I ignored him, and he sauntered off. As soon as he went down the back hall I knew where he was going. I quickly slipped out another door and went to stand out of sight but close to the outside of the back bedroom sliding door.

I heard him start trying to slide the door back and walked up close enough to be in direct sight when he came out the door. As soon as the door opened I said his name and then told him no in a very stern manner. He froze, caught in the act. I came in through the door and told him no again and sent him to his couch. When he does something he?s not supposed to he gets sent to his couch, which is leather I might add so it?s not too harsh a punishment.

We went through this ritual about 3 more times before he figured out that it was a trap. I don?t care if he doesn?t open the door because I told him no or because he thinks I?m waiting outside to catch him. Either way he understands that you don?t go open that sliding glass door.

From time to time I do catch him looking or even walking up to the sliding glass door but he doesn?t try to open it. The crazy thing about this whole deal is he can go outside anytime he wants. All he needs to do is go sit by the front door. I let the dogs out many times each day, whenever they want.

Now if I could just get Tuxcitto to resist the temptation to go out of the yard I would be overjoyed. But I know that that may be too much for his personality to handle so I cut him some slack. After all we all have our weak spots and his are few.

A Guide To Choosing The Right Closet

Closets are important fixtures in the house. Aside from containing and providing protection for clothes, toys, and food, the closet contributes significantly to the room’s ambience and design.

Before placing an order for a closet, here are some things that you need to consider.

* Size

The size of the closet depends on the size of the space in which the furniture will be placed. After considering the amount of space, also think about the amount of items that you will be placing inside the closet.

It is suggested that you place similar items in one closet than having several closets than contain the same items. This will provide ease in organizing the contents and in looking for things stored in the closet.

* Materials

While most closets are made of wood, the most important thing that you need to consider is the sturdiness of the materials used. Closets are almost permanent fixtures in the house. These cannot be easily replaced without going to a lot of trouble with the construction.

So make sure that the materials used can stand thru time until you decide to have the house renovated. Make sure that the wood has been pretreated to prevent mold and insect growth.

Also, make sure that the materials are suitable for what you intend to store in the closet. Some closets may not be good for storing food, so ask first before buying a closet or ordering one.

You can also purchase a closet in three ways. You can buy stock closets, which are ready-made that you can take it home on the same day. This is cheaper, however this provides you with little options.

You can order semi-custom closets. This would mean that the maker can give you samples of designs, parts and accessories, and you can select your own combinations.

Custom closets are the most expensive. If you choose a custom closet, you can specify the size and shape (for irregularly-shaped spaces) and design of your closet that you would like to order.

Also consider the drawer slides. These are rated according to load capacity as light, medium or heavy. It is better to choose slides that have full extension capability so can access the full depth of the drawers.

* Contents

Consider the amount of contents that will be stored in the closet. It will be better that you have a single closet for similar items for ease of storage and finding what you need.

Also, think about what type of items will be stored. Will you need additional drawers, attachments and racks for your closet? Make sure that you inform or ask the maker about this so he can give you suggestions and more information.

* Design

If you will be placing an order for a customized closet, you can choose exactly what you would like it to look like. Here are some considerations.

Finish - Apart from considering the latest trend, ask what will look good with your home. For a traditional style, brushed finishes, polished

nickel, pewter or brass will look great in your home’s interiors. For contemporary style, enameled and gloss-metal shine will match your home’s style.

Knobs and pulls - Knobs and pulls are mounted on drawers and doors to facilitate opening. Knobs are attached with a single bolt and screw and require less space than pulls, which are attached by two screws. Both can be combined with a backplate or can be used alone.

These are available in a variety of designs, colors and finish including sterling, antique or polished brass, aged bronze, iron, nickel, polished chrome, ceramics and antique copper.

Backplates - Backplates are placed on the knob or pull and the drawer or door surface. These are used to cover existing holes on the surface (usually when changing knobs or pulls), to protect the surface (during construction or when the knob is pulled) and to improve the design of the hardware.

* Budget

Ready-made closet are always the cheapest but make sure that these will fit your allotted space in your room. If you will be able to stretch your budget, it is still best to get a semi-custom or customized closet so you can specify the size and the design.

You can always check online for different offers on stock, semi-custom and custom closets. Surely, you can get one that will match your storage and decorating needs.

Longneck African Giraffe - Distinctive Walking Gait - Unknown Outside Of Africa

Ancient cultures in Africa revered the giraffe, as some modern cultures do today, and commonly depicted it in prehistoric rock and cave paintings. Unknown outside of Africa, early written records described the giraffe as “magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, colossal in height and inoffensive in character.”

The Giraffe Giraffa Camelopardalis moves about the semi-arid regions in groups. Its height allows it to keep in contact with other giraffes over large distances as well as spotting predators from afar. It is not uncommon to see other animals following a giraffe using it as an early predator warning system. The Giraffe is vulnerable when drinking. It is a quiet species although the males fight viciously for dominance over the group.

The neck is so long the giraffe must spread its front legs apart so its head can reach the ground to drink. It has unusually elastic blood vessels with a series of valves that help offset the sudden buildup of blood (and to prevent fainting) when the head is raised, lowered or swung quickly.

The giraffe’s high shoulders and sloping back give the impression that its front legs are much longer than the hind legs, but they are in fact only slightly longer. The giraffe (as well as its short-necked relative the okapi from Central African forests) has a distinctive walking gait, moving both legs on one side forward at the same time.

At a gallop, however, the gait changes, and the giraffe simultaneously swings the hind legs ahead of and outside the front legs, reaching speeds of 35 miles an hour. Its heavy head moves forward with each powerful stride, then swings back to stay balanced. Giraffes have “horns” not true horns but knobs covered with skin and hair above the eyes to protect the head from blows

The giraffes size is 5.2 meters head height.
The giraffes weight up to 1,400 kg.
The lifespan is 28 years.
The giraffes predators are humans and wild dogs.

The giraffe is a herbivore browsers. When protected, giraffes can flourish in areas where food is abundant year round. Although they drink water when it’s available, they can survive where it is scarce. They occasionally eat grass and fruits of various trees and shrubs, but their principal food source is the acacia tree.

The habitat where the giraffe is dry savannah woodland. Giraffes are found in arid and dry-savanna zones south of the Sahara, wherever trees occur.

The reproduction of the giraffe is as follows: Single young is born any time of the year. Gestation period 15 months.

See this only in Africa in the wild.

Natural Gas Grills — Every Home Should Have One

Natural gas grills are machines that work on natural gas fuels, such compressed gas, a fossil fuel with methane as its active element. These natural gas grills come in various sizes and shapes, and display a wide array of features, depending on the particular make.

The number one function of the natural gas grill is to cook food, such as meat, usually outside but sometimes inside. Food is cooked either directly by a gas-flame or through heat-grilling elements that radiate the necessary heat.

Like the charcoal grill, natural gas grills are mainly used for picnics, barbeques, wedding, and other outside celebratory occurreneces. These kinds of natural gas grills can either be stationary (made of brick and mortar) or have wheels on one end for mobility, as well as either open, nut usually with a raised lid having a small window for observation.

Other possible features on the outside natural gas grill are: cooking utensils, a food preparation counter (made of finished wood and either reclining or permanently suspended), temperature knobs, condiment receptacles, and supply shelves (adjustable or stationary) positioned beneath the grill.

Natural gas grills that are positioned indoors vary from simple home stoves (although many present state stoves in the domestic setting are now electric) to vast industrial restaurant grills. Natural gas grills in the home usually consist of anywhere from four to eight range-top burners, each having round or square metallic grill pieces, all positioned over a stove with adjustable shelving, which, in turn, is situated over a small broiler. Some present state indoor grills (i. e. stoves) have roasters that jut out over the range-top at about eye-level.

The industrial-sized natural gas grills have multiple or broad cooking spaces, several rows of temperature knobs, all positioned under large air vents. Some current restaurant natural gas grills no longer have grill-tops, per se; instead some of these grills have simple metal tops that can become quite hot when ready for cooking.

Many natural gas grills are implemented for conversion to accommodate either one gas source or another, depending on preference and necessity. For those individuals who wish not to expend energy using natural gas (and thus hype up the gas bill), natural gas grills can be adjusted to operate on propane or even coal.

Natural gas grills are cool contraptions to use and usually produce mouth-watering delights to sate the appetite, but they can also be dangerous and even life-threatening without appropriate training and know how. So always use exactly as the manufacturer advises.

DCS Gas Grill products offer a wide selection of versatility and value to your next BBQ.

Copper Makes the World Go Round Too

I’m pretty sure you know what copper is. After all, it’s found in a lot of the things we come across in our day-to-day experiences.

Copper wires. Copper plumbing. Doorknobs. Sterling silver. Flatware (dining utensils). Electromagnets; electromagnetic motors; the steam engine; spare change (coins); brass musical instruments; ceramic glazes; electrical relays, busbars, and switches; mildew killer; vacuum tubes; cathode ray tubes; spare change; and tons more.

Copper is also used as a biostatic liner in hospitals and ships. Bacteria and living things will not grow on biostatic surfaces. Doorknobs are made of copper in hospitals to help prevent disease transfer. Ships are lined with copper so that barnacles and mussels will not cling to its outside surfaces.

Fun fact of the day: The Statue of Liberty contains 179,000 pounds of copper.

Rumor even has it that sucking on a copper penny will let the breathalyzer test read 0.

In fact, I bet copper has been ingrained in each of our minds because of the existence of Chemistry class in our high school curriculum.

Copper isn’t always that red element with a bright lustre and shine you see almost everywhere. Sometimes it comes in a blue solution of copper ions. Sometimes it’s mixed in with other metals, such as otherwise pure bricks of gold, because gold is much too soft to keep in brick forms all by themselves.

Copper has been used since the dawn of the most ancient civilizations. It may well be the oldest metal in use, being utilized by the people for over ten thousand years. In fact, for five millenia ancient civilizations did not know any other metal.

Because of its malleability they simply hammered out the native ore into the shapes they desired, usually containers. It was called “chalkos” in Greek times. In Roman times the term was “Cyprium,” from which copper’s symbol in the periodic table of elements is derived.

So how is copper extracted from the earth’s crust? Native copper is mineral form, and they are found in ores, being extracted from open-pit mines. The ores are extracted from a hard, igneous rock containing crystals called porphyry. Even then, the amount of copper you can extract is as little as 0.4 to 1 percent.

While copper is necessary for all higher plants and animals, it can be toxic if found in exceedingly high amounts. It can lead to schizophrenia.

There is an inherited illness that retains copper called Wilson’s disease, which prevents copper from being excreted into bile by the liver. If left untreated, the excess copper found in the body can lead to brain and liver damage.

Copper is surely a valuable metal to all. In fact, there was even a group that was formed, with an aim to try and regulate copper export, trying to gain the same power that OPEC has.

It did not succeed because America was never a member, it being the second largest producer of copper in the world today. It’s largest copper mine can be found in the state of Utah.

So look around you for a while. Chances are, you can find a hint of copper. In fact, there might be a copper wire poking through from your CPU right now. Never underestimate it, as surely the world wouldn’t be what it is today without copper. Copper makes the world go round too.

Knobs, Hinges and More is Proud to Introduce Objects by Tracy Glover Studios and Michael Healy Designs

www.KnobsHingesandMore.com is proud to announce the addition of Tracy Glover hand blown cabinet hardware and lighting and Michael Healy finely crafted door knockers.

Southold, NY (PRWEB) February 27, 2006 — www.KnobsHingesandMore.com is happy to offer Objects of Art by Tracy Glover Studios. The ageless art of glass blowing is being energized by artisan Tracy Glover, who breathes new life into the medium with innovative talent, studied skill and a healthy reverence for tradition.

The Rhode Island-based glass blower is the designer and creator of the Tracy Glover Collection - an elegant family of handcrafted table lamps, floor lamps and vases. A study in understatement, Ms. Glover’s creations speak to any d?cor.

Ms. Glover employs Venetian glass techniques, choosing glass with vivid, ultra-rich colors like aurora, plum, celery, tourmaline and steel blue. These striking hues take on a new dimension of vibrancy when combined with neutrals. This drama of contrast is one of Ms. Glover’s signatures.

Each lamp and vase ordered is individually produced at the artist’s industrial studio. Mass production does not exist. The glass blowing process begins only when an order is placed, not a second sooner, promising the buyer a one-of-a-kind result.

Subtle variations in pattern and color are a natural occurrence in the process. Therefore, the artist recommends ordering pairs of lamps at the same time, to ensure a good match.

With a degree from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, Tracy Glover’s path has taken her across the world. From Manhattan to Murano, Italy, this bold innovator has patiently crafted her signature elegance. It is her honor to have been selected as the first female glassblower at Val Saint Lambert Crystal factory in Belgium, a revered facility nestled in a 14th century convent.

A world away, both literally and figuratively, her creations have appeared on The White House Christmas tree, and have a permanent place at The Clinton Library in Little Rock and the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan. Ms. Glover’s lamps are sprinkled like jewels in the Spa Tower Corridor and the Baccarat Room at the famed Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

We are also happy to offer Michael Healy Designs finely sculptured door knockers and door bell ringers.Michael Healy studied metal sculpture at the University of Notre Dame where he learned century-old bronze casting techniques which became the foundation for his artistic expression. Michael’s artistic style is very identifiable. He is known for his ability to skillfully combine quality materials into sculptural, yet functional forms. He is particularly noted for his talent for turning an everyday object into a unique work of art. His most recognizable works are this series of unusual Door Knockers and Doorbell Ringers. Michael Healy has prolifically sculpted over one hundred door sculptures. His door sculptures depict interests such as gardening, cooking, outdoor life, the Southwest, horse-back riding and the seashore.

To ensure consistently high quality at all stages of the metal casting process, Michael Healy works from his own foundry in Rhode Island. Michael is assisted by a select group of talented artisans who handcraft each Door Knocker or Doorbell Ringer. This personal attention to detail guarantees that every door sculpture is truly special. Michael Healy signs each of his Door Knockers confirming its authenticity and quality craftsmanship.

Dolin’s distinct interior designs and tabletop accessories have been featured in a wide variety of national and international publications, including the New York Times, Interior Design ,Food & Wine and The Home by Susan Szenasy. His entry into the decorative hardware market is marked by the same simplicity of design and clean forms that have gained him a reputation as an original, talented designer.

Bin pulls take a dramatic new look with the Glass Bin Pull Series and complementary Mushroom Knobs. Both the Bar and Barrel Series are simple geometric forms with a great deal of versatility in their application. The Acorn Glass Series is an elegant turn on a natural form. And the Ceramic Series - King, Queen, Pawn, and Bishop - brings a clever, new twist to a classic look. A door has to have hinges and a means of opening and closing. Add some dash to the required hardware by making decisions about their look and feel. Choose the warmth of brass or the strength of a black finish. At the front door, decide to dress up the doorbell by choosing hardware that adds definitive character. Decide not to have a doorbell, but select a stylish door knocker instead. Make the front door the first statement you make for your home. Make your inner doors confirm the statement.Whether adding a ceramic knob or a gecko cabinet pull; a glass drawer pull or brass hinges to your kitchen cabinets, the warmest room in the house takes on the cozy, homey feeling that is its nature.

It’s all about the details, the personalization and ownership that comes with the details, that makes enhancing a kitchen something of an adventure … and fun.Floor registers frequently come with memories of growing up. Of home, or of grandma’s and grandpa’s house. And it’s impossible to think of those memories without warmth - literally. Recreate those memories with a register cover reminiscent of those days, and make the warmth in your house match the warmth of your childhoodWhen it comes to beautifying your home, we take nothing for granted. Oscilloscopes

An oscilloscope is an electronic instrument that is used to indicate voltage of an electronic device. It is chiefly used to diagnose the working condition of any electric equipment. It represents one or more electric potential differences in a two-dimensional graph, with the horizontal axis representing time and the vertical axis showing voltage. Some oscilloscopes can show even two or more waveforms. These are used for phase comparison and timing measurements.

An oscilloscope can be used to find out exactly which part of the electrical equipment is faulty. The oscilloscope?s ground is put on the circuit?s ground and its probe is put on a connection between any two stages in the middle of an array of stages. If there is no signal, it indicates that some part in the preceding stage is not functioning properly. This will enable us to locate exactly which component is not working. This is very useful since electronic equipments stop functioning because of just one faulty component within the whole equipment. Another application of an oscilloscope is to test newly designed circuitry. Software engineers also used oscilloscopes for testing the electronics of software.

An oscilloscope is shaped like a rectangular box. It has a small screen, several control knobs, input connectors and buttons on the front panel. The screen has a grid drawn over it, known as the graticule. Each grid in the graticule is called a division. The oscilloscope keeps drawing a horizontal line across the middle of the screen. This line, or the trace, keeps moving from left to right over the screen. If the input voltage deviates from zero, the trace deflects upwards or downwards. There are two controls which monitor this deflection: timebase control, which monitors the speed of the line in seconds per division; and the vertical control, which monitors the vertical deviation in volts per division. It thus gives a graph of voltage/time.

There are different kinds of oscilloscopes: analog oscilloscope, digital oscilloscope, digital storage oscilloscope, digital phosphor oscilloscope and digital sampling oscilloscope. Agilent, B+K Precision, EZ Digital, Extech Instruments Corp., Fluke, Instek, International Tools & Technologies, Inc., Iwatsu, Kenwood TMI Corp., LeCroy, Morrow Wave, Tektronix and Yokogawa are some of the popular oscilloscope manufacturers.

Information about oscilloscopes, along with their prices and product facts can be sourced from the internet. There are hundreds of websites that give information about oscilloscopes.

Oscilloscopes provides detailed information on Analog Oscilloscopes, Digital Oscilloscopes, Handheld Oscilloscopes, Oscilloscope Repair and more. Oscilloscopes is affliated with Open MRI.

Shopping For Keyboards

Keyboard is one of the important musical instruments that a musician desires to buy first. There are varieties of keyboards available in the market with various features and functions. All these musical keyboards fall under categories such as MIDI controllers, digital pianos, arrangers, portables, synthesizers, work stations and organs. Each type of keyboard caters different needs and one need to know his exact requirements thoroughly before selecting the type of keyboard.

MIDI controller keyboards come with different varied number of keys like 25 and 88. They also include response factors such as velocity sensitive, weighted and aftertouch. Some of the MIDI controllers are equipped with control surfaces, drum pads, combination controllers, wind controllers, sliders, and knobs.

There are two broad categories of Digital Pianos like Console Pianos that are used at home and portable stage pianos usable for stage performance. Most of the features are same in both varieties and changes are only in their designs and sizes. The essential factors one has to look while buying digital pianos are key responsiveness, sound quality and their amplifier and speaker features. These factors highly influence the quality of music generated by them.

Arranger is a musical keyboard which is very useful for music directors and song writers. These keyboards are fitted with professional sound engines and a variety of compositional tools making the song writing easier. Portables are similar to arranges but meant for beginners. They are equipped with learning functions to facilitate the newly starters to acquire music. Arranges and portables can be connected with personal computers using USB and other types of connectivity in order to upload and download songs and related software.

Synthesizers are another type of musical keyboards that produce sound. Most of the present models use pre-recorded sounds for creating music where as the analog synthesizers produce music manipulating electrical signals. Sample based synthesizers are capable of producing variety of other musical instruments like organ, strings, piano, etc.

Workstations are basically arrangers with more enhanced features needed for song recording. These keyboards are fitted with hard disk drives, multi-track recording devices, and many more useful features that help the professional composers to produce high quality music.

Organ is basically a musical keyboard fitted with only an organ sound engine targeting the dedicated organ players. Unlike traditional analog models, present organs use digital models with features like pitch bend, modulation, and sound effects. This gives optimum desired results.

An Introduction to the Types of Guitar

The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments today. There are different kinds of guitars that are available out for different guitar players. Guitars are different in terms of playability, overall appearance and sound quality.

Here are some of the types of guitars that guitar players or aspiring guitar players can choose from:

Acoustic

If you want go get into the guitar world, you can start learning with an acoustic guitar.

Acoustic guitars are dependent on their structures and body shapes for resonating sounds. Unlike the more modern electric guitars, they don’t rely on other external devices to enhance sounds. The natural vibrations of the strings are resonated by the body of the guitar.

Acoustic guitars are generally made out of wood. The neck is usually made from mahogany and the fret board is made of maple or rosewood. There are many kinds of acoustic guitars, here are some of them:

1) Classical

Classical guitars are very popular and are usually the choice guitar for beginners. The strings are usually made from nylon. They are usually played in a standard sitting position and used in playing classical music. Classical guitars produce whole sounds which are very pleasing to the ear.

Flamenco guitars are similar to classical guitars, however, they produce crisper and thinner sounds than the other classical guitars.

2) Steel-top

Steel-top guitars are much similar than the classical guitar but are constructed to be more resilient. The parts of the steel-top guitar are reinforced and their bodies are significantly larger than the classical guitars. They also produce a warmer tone than the classical guitar.

3) 12-String guitar

A normal guitar usually has 6 strings, but the 12-string guitar, as its name implies, has 12 strings. Each string is accompanied by another string with the same note but is usually tuned in a higher octave. This guitar produces a semi-chorus effect which is very pleasant to the ear.

4) Resonator

This type of guitar is similar to the steel-top guitar, but the steel in the middle of the soundboard is used to amplify the sound from the vibration of the guitar strings to produce a very thin and distinct sound. These guitars are generally used when playing the blues. There are also variations of the resonator guitar: the square-neck resonator guitar is played on the lap like a piano or organ; and the round neck resonator guitar is played like a common guitar. Resonator guitars work very well with glass or metal slides.

5) Archtop

The archtop guitar was inspired by other instruments such as the violin and the cello. An archtop guitar usually has the f-hole design. Jazz players prefer archtop guitars. Some archtop guitars can command a price of about $25,000.

6) Acoustic Bass

Acoustic bass guitars are bass guitars without electronic pick-ups. The body of the guitar is used to produce the sound. They are usually 4-stringed guitars but there are acoustic bass guitars which have 5 or 6 strings.

Electric

Electric guitars make use of electronic pick-ups to amplify the vibrations of the guitar strings. They are usually connected to electric amplifiers. Electric guitars have a solid or semi-solid body type and they don’t use the body for sound resonance so usually make very little or no sound when played without an amplifier. The concept used by electric guitars is that the energy of the strings is diverted into electrical impulses and not directly into sound so that they are able to achieve an amplified sound.

Electric guitars usually have control knobs for changing the volume or the tone of the guitar. There are also pick-up selectors in electric guitars and many electric guitars use multiple pick-ups to achieve the best guitar sounds. These pick-ups gather and produce different tones from the guitar. The tone knobs are used to shift from a bass-intensive sound to a treble-intensive sound or vice versa.

Some electric guitars also have whammy bars. These bars are attached to the guitar to shift notes without changing the finger positions on the fret board. Whammy bars are used to produce “crying” guitar sounds and are a very useful tool when performing rock and roll songs or even ballads. The use of the whammy bar in less expensive guitars is not advised because it may cause the strings to go out of tune.

These are some of the basic types of guitars that are available for everyone. Guitars are made to fit the preferences of the player in terms of playability and sound. Choose the guitar that best fits your preference.

Remodeling Bathrooms: How Hard Can It Really Be?

It?s well known that remodeling the bathroom in your home is an easy way to increase its value. Much like the kitchen, the bathroom is one of the most used, and most appreciated parts of your house. So spending money in either of these areas provides a very high return on investment when it comes time to sell. But just how difficult is it to remodel a home bathroom? Is it as expensive as everyone says? Can you do it on a tight budget?

Here?s what this expert says.

Depending on how detailed you want to get, remodeling a home bathroom doesn?t have to be expensive or difficult. If your happy with the current location of your plumbing fixtures, you can most likely do everything yourself (with a little patience and guidance). All you really need is some basic tools, some creativity and the time and determination to do it.

There are dozens of options when planning your remodel. Here?s a few of the simple ones most do-it-yourselfer?s can handle:

Open up a bathroom by increasing it?s space.

One of the fastest ways to improve your bathroom is to add some space to it. Adding just a few square feet can transform your bathroom from cramped and crowded to luxurious. If it?s possible, break a wall in any direction possible to add that extra depth. Just keep in mind that any room you take the space from will now be a little smaller. So it?s a bit of a balancing act. Often times though, just a few inches from a bedroom will never be noticed. Yet it makes a huge difference in a traditionally small area like a bathroom.

Let in more natural light if you can.

To add to the effect created by the extra space, try to let in as much natural light as possible. If you can add a skylight or bigger window, you?ll be impressed at the difference. On a recent remodel of my own, I installed an entire glass block wall in my shower. No it?s one of the brightest spots in the house!

Remodeling a home bathroom by adding extra storage places.

Extra storage can work wonders for your bathroom (and the rest of the house too). Adding some shelves, drawers and cabinets will increase the functionality of your bathroom like you never imagined. You just can?t have enough storage space!

Cosmetic changes are quick, cheap and make a dramatic difference.

A quick trip to the local kitchen and bath remodeling center can do more for your bathroom then just about anything else. Try changing knobs, door and drawer fronts, paint colors or countertops. The difference that these changes will bring to your bathroom will astonish you. But best of all, it can be done in an afternoon (or at worst a weekend), and it?s relatively inexpensive.

Change that dated flooring.

Adding character and class to a bathroom is often achieved with a new ceramic floor. Nothing says luxurious better then a nice new ceramic tile installation. Although this is a little more involved then paint and knobs, a little patience and average skills will result in a fantastic looking job. If you?re worried about that ceramic being cold underfoot, look into some under floor heating pads for those cold mornings. They are easy to install (although you will probably need an electrician for this one) and very nice on those cold mornings.

If your serious about sprucing up your bathroom with a professional looking remodel, go to Amazon or your local Barnes and Nobles and pick up a book on bathroom remodeling. You?ll find many do it yourself projects laid out step by step for you, making the process virtually foolproof.

If you try using one or more of the above suggestions you?ll wind up pleasantly surprised with the results. These simple and highly cost-effective ways to improve your home are within the reach of just about anyone. As an added bonus, they?ll increase your homes value too.

(Rk international) How Much Should You Spend To Get Your Home Ready To Sell?

Filed under: Texas Knobs N' Things — Admin @ 4:50 am

How Much Should You Spend To Get Your Home Ready To Sell?

When you get ready to sell your home, it’s important to make it sparkle, especially when compared to your neighbors’ houses. Every real estate agent knows that well-polished houses not only sell faster, but they also sell for higher prices.

When planning the “spruce up” strategy for your home, you’ll first want to consider how much you want to spend, and then how much of that money to allocate to the outside and the inside in order to help sell your home the most quickly and for the best price.

How much should you spend? The answer is simple: as little as possible. The idea is to make your home shine by addressing areas that will make a good impression on buyers, without spending money you won’t be able to recoup at sale time. Generally, that means a serious clean-up, inside and out. Then, depending upon your budget, you can make relatively inexpensive (but often dramatic) upgrades, such as paint, new knobs for kitchen cabinets, or new towel racks in the bathroom.

On the outside, make sure your home looks nice from the street, since that’s the first impression every buyer will have. Keep the lawn mowed and the sidewalks edged. That’s important, and doesn’t cost anything extra, since you’d be doing that whether your home was for sale or not. Plant a few annual flowers along the walkway and around the house. They’ll add a touch of hominess and color, and make a good impression on buyers.

Keep flower gardens and shrubbery well-maintained, and make sure the front door is nicely painted and opens easily without creaking. If the paint is peeling on the outside of your home, especially the windows and doors, it’s time to repaint with a color that attracts your buyer’s profile.

If there are shingles missing, they should be replaced, but don’t put on a new roof unless it’s absolutely necessary; you’ll rarely recoup such a major expense. If the driveway is covered with oil stains, there are some good products that can remove them without a great deal of cost.

Inside, go through each room, doing a thorough cleaning and removing clutter. Have a friend walk through with you, telling you what catches their eye, because you may have grown accustomed to things that will create a negative impression in the minds of prospective buyers. If rooms need paint, repaint them, using colors that you know your buyers will love.

Pay special attention to bathrooms and the kitchen. If the floor looks old and worn in the kitchen, new linoleum tiles are easy to install and can instantly give old kitchens new sparkle. Repair or replace any dripping faucets–another relatively inexpensive repair that can pay big dividends.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get your home ready to sell, but you do want to make it as attractive as you can (without spending a lot) if you want to sell it quickly–and at the highest possible price.

Decorating on a Shoestring Budget

Right now one of the most popular shows on television is, Trading Spaces. If you havent gotten an opportunity to watch this show, the object of the game is to decorate one room in someone elses house with a budget of a $1,000. The decorators truly struggle to accomplish this so you know it is hard when even they, trained professionals, are having problems creating the room of the homeowners dreams. Do not despair just because your money is limited- you can still create a warm and inviting home frugally. When people come into our home and see our front room (the only room we have decorated since we are relatively new homeowners) they always comment on how beautiful our drapes, furniture, and whole look of this room is. Do you think I disclose that we put the furniture together ourselves and that the whole dcor came compliments of Target? No way! Never divulge the sordid details, just simply bask in the glory and let them try to recreate your look. Here are a few tips for creating an inviting home on a budget.

  • Watch television shows, read books, and look through magazines to gather inspiration for creating a stylish home. Although many of the things you look at are completely out of your budget, you can try to recreate it with lower costing materials and a little creativity. Some great looks can be found on www.potterybarn.com, www.pierone.com, www.ikea.com, and www.marthastewart.com.
  • Paint is the cheapest way to really change a room. One thing I have learned is to never be afraid of color- bright colors can really liven up a room. Be wary though with small rooms because this can make the rooms look smaller and closed off. In smaller rooms use softer and lighter colors- yellows, light green, lavenders, and white/off-white.
  • Getting your home organized will make your house look well-kept. To find out some great ways to get your home as well as yourself organized, go to www.organizedhome.com. This site is wonderful for learning how and what you need to do to clear out the rubbish in your home. With different styles of baskets to organize your items it not only makes the room look cleaner, but it also adds to the dcor.
  • Target, Kmart, and Walmart all offer great items for your home at a much lower cost. Target has fantastic drapes, tableware, towels, pillows, and furniture for your home. Kmart offers incredible linens, drapes, and sheets from the Martha Stewart line. Walmart offers great fabrics for those do-it-yourself projects in making pillows, drapes, and linens.
  • To add pictures to your walls, look through old art books or photograph books. Buy a cheap frame to put it in and you will have beautiful artwork for a fraction of the cost.
  • Rearrange your furniture in your home. Try to find new ways to break up a room or to make the room more open and inviting.
  • Light a candle and put potpourri in a bowl. This really warms up a room, not to mention adding a beautiful smell to the air.
  • Find slipcovers for your couches. Doing this is a lot cheaper then buying a new sofa and when you get tired of it you can take the covers off. These are especially nice if you have little children because it is a great way to preserve the quality of your furniture. The slipcovers are easier to clean because you can throw them in the wash, unlike your couch. A couple of great places to look for nice slipcovers are www.kohls.com and www.surefit.com.
  • Want something in particular in your home, but cant afford it? Hit www.ebay.com and bid on it. Ebay always has great things for your house not to mention beautiful antiques and collectibles which make your home more unique.
  • Buy large pillows to use as extra seating. These are great for when you have a large group over and not enough seating. Dont invest in more seating; just buy big beautiful pillows for your guests to sit on.
  • Go to the garage sales, but go early. Those who wait do not get the deals that the early risers get. Dont underestimate the Salvation Army and Goodwill either because you can find some interesting and beautiful things for your house.
  • Learn one craft that will aid you in decorating your home. Several of the fabric and craft stores offer wonderful classes for learning crafts such as sewing and floral for a very low cost. By learning crafts you can make things yourself at a lower cost or you may be able to make money off of this to afford you more luxuries in your home- you just never know.
  • Hit your local Dollar Tree for some great buys on things to make your home more inviting. You might laugh at this one, but you would be surprised what ends up at that store. I have bought beautiful mugs, baskets, and stationary for a buck a piece and no one knows that I spent so little money. Try to think outside the box and go to the stores that are normally not known for quality houseware. This is where you get the real deals.
  • Purchase all different types of blankets and put them under your end tables or drape one on your sofa. They make your guests feel cozy and invited especially on those cold winter nights.
  • Put a book or two on your coffee table that can be a conversation piece, but don’t overdo it. People tend to get carried away with this and then you lose the beauty of the furniture underneath. One or two books are nice, but four or five looks like clutter.
  • If you buy the do-it-yourself furniture or have a piece that looks like it needs a face-lift try replacing the knobs on those cabinets and drawers. A beautiful brushed silver knob or ornate gold knob can make the item look entirely different.
  • Replace your old plastic curtain rods with sterling silver or gold rods. Target and Kmart have some really beautiful ones with different styles of ends (leaves, fruit, glass) that really add that special touch.
  • Try a theme room, but dont get carried away. Remember that whatever theme you chose you will have to live with it for a long time. Go for classic themes that seem to withstand the ages. If you choose to pick a theme for the room do hints of it throughout rooms, but dont make the entire room one big theme. Just give your guests hints of it.

I hope these tips will offer you some insight on decorating your own home. My advice to you is that you start small and with one room at a time. Do not get carried away with redoing your whole home or you will feel overwhelmed. Concentrate your efforts on one project until you are completely satisfied and then begin thinking about another project.
