Many people are surprised to learn that taking care of a few things regarding the upkeep and presentation of a home can have a positive effect on the selling price of the home. So what can you do to improve the market value of your home? Here are some easy suggestions.

It is a good idea to get the property inspected by a neutral party. A property inspector will see things that you might miss, as you are “used” to them and see them every day. Your acclimation with your property can actually serve to work against you in these situations. A property inspection done early on can also avoid surprises come closing time, as any prudent buyer will have their own inspection performed.

Properties that are well maintained command both a higher selling price and quicker selling time.

Start with the outside. Nice landscaping and a well manicured lawn go a long way. Weed any beds, rid the area of unwanted grasses. Remember, first impressions are hard to overcome!

If your home is painted, consider a fresh coat of paint. If you are going to do this, be sure it is done correctly and by a professional. Existing paint that is peeling and blistered should be removed. A coat of primer should be applied and then the top coat professionally applied, so as to avoid overspray on eaves and window frames.

Repair gutters, shutters, and other outdoor accessories. Clear them of leaves and debris.

Consider replacing your front door. Have the door frame nicely painted or maintained. Remember, we are still working on a first impression here. The front entry way, porch, or sidewalk should also be in tip top condition. This may require a fresh coat of paint or water sealant, concrete treatment, or whatever is applicable to your particular situation.

Replace an unsightly mailbox and put out a fresh doormat. Polish or replace metal door fixtures or brass, and ensure the doorbell is in good condition and in working order.

Ensure all concrete and asphalt is in good condition. This would include the driveway, garage, and carport. Oil stains from crankshafts should be removed. Badly cracked or potted asphault may need to be torn up and replaced. The same would go for badly cracked sidewalks or other concrete groundcover, that may have been disturbed by tree roots, water, or time.

Air conditioners should not be rusted or otherwise unattractive. Paint all exposed surfaces.

Any outdoor living areas such as patios or decks should be populated with attractive furnishings, and perhaps accented with potted plants. Pools should be clean, sparkling, and the filtration equipment should be attractive and in good working order. It might be necessary to drain the pool to repair any cracks or have the surface repainted.

Pay particular attention to windows. Panes should be well maintained and freshly painted. Windows should slide open and closed smoothly and without much effort. Broken glass should be replaced, all screens should be free of rust, holes, and tears. No window should be without a screen. Prune flora near windows so as to allow the free flow of sunlight into the home. A bright home will be more attractive to a buyer than a dark, gloomy home. Windows should be sparkly clean.

Doors should also open easily, and not make loud noises. Oil squeaky parts and polish or replace metal accessories such as hinges, knobs, and locks. Screen doors should be in as good condition as possible. Sliding glass doors should be clean and slide easily, and have locking mechanisms that are functional.

Walls should be clean and freshly painted. Wallpaper should not be peeling or faded.

Carpets should be cleaned or replaced, especially if pets have lived in the home. Nobody wants to move into a home that smells of a barn. Hardwood floors should be in good condition, and any ceramic tile floors should be clean and not cracked.

All light bulbs should be working. Fixtures should be updated and fit with the decor of the home. Consider adding some halogen lighting here and there. Switches and plugs should be cleaned or replaced.

Pay special attention to kitchens and bathrooms. They should be squeaky clean. All porcelin should be clean and shiny. Bathrooms should be well lit and free of odors. Woodwork and cabinetry should be freshly painted or stained. All fixtures and mirrors should be polished. Toilet and floors and appliances should be cleaned and in working order.

Surface coverings, such as linoleum countertops, may need to be updated.

Remove excess furnishings to avoid overcrowding of your home. While you may love that stack of National Geographics on the floor of your living room, all debris should be removed. Give the place a bright, airy feel. Put excess furnishings in storage if necessary. Closets should be uncrowded so as to give a feeling of space.

A cottage industry of “home enhancement” professionals has emerged in recent years. These people will come into your home and “redecorate” it for you, mostly using existing furnishings. “One problem with using a flat paint on interior walls is that it doesn’t take kindly to scrubbing,” he says. “If you scrub it with a damp cloth, you’ll remove the dirt or smudge, but the exposed pigment particles can ruin the finish. To avoid this, choose a high performance paint (not flat), that can stand up to a good washing.”

Expand space with drawer organizers.

Is a small-sized kitchen or bath cramping your style? Try adding drawer organizers to increase your storage space. These days, you can find a nice range of inexpensive racks and slide-in baskets at discount and hardware stores. Whether you store cleaning utensils, Grandma’s vintage pie pans, or your favorite bath salts you can create new nooks and crannies for all of your stuff, and get the clutter off the counter.

Gain a foothold on more attractive flooring.

Flooring makes a huge difference in the appearance of a kitchen or bath. “Oftentimes vinyl flooring is dated and worn,” Vandervort says. “But the good news is that you can go ahead and lie new vinyl or laminated wood material right over the old flooring. Many of the items available today give the look of ceramic tile or natural wood at a lower cost.”

Brighten it up.

For an easy and inexpensive way to brighten up a kitchen, install under-the-counter lighting. A small purchase at the hardware store is all it takes to completely change the way the light hits the surfaces of a room. You can also save energy dollars by choosing the right lighting. “Switch from incandescent light bulbs to highly efficient compact fluorescents, and you’ll use about one-quarter to one-third less energy to produce the same amount of light,” Vandervort says. Another tip: move natural light further into rooms by bouncing it off the ceiling. A window located close to the ceiling works for this, as do louvers or operable blinds that can help direct light.

Make a tiny bathroom look larger.

Even a bathroom the size of a phone booth can look larger with a little ingenuity, according to www.americanstandard-us.com. Try using lighter, cooler colors: they feel airy and trick the eye. Wallpaper with a smaller pattern also helps expand the space. Try some on the ceiling, or emphasize horizontal lines with a coordinating border. Painting Tips for Your Home Remodeling Plans

Nothing can change the appearance of a room quicker and easier than painting the walls and trim. It’s also one of the least expensive home improvement projects that you can undertake, especially for the impact that it creates. So here are the steps that you need to go through to prepare a room for painting.

First of all get everything that you can out of the room. The less furniture and decorative items that you have to work around, the better. After you have done that take off the electrical faceplates and heating register covers. They are usually only held on by a couple of screws anyway, so it shouldn’t be difficult to take them off. Also remove all knobs and handles that could be in close proximity to the paint. Then mask off all of the switches and receptacles in the room, and cover all the heavy furniture that is left in the room with dropcloths or bedsheets.

It’s a good idea to protect the floor by running a 2 in. piece of masking tape around the edge of the entire room and then bringing your dropcloths right up to the edge of the tape.

Now is the time to remove old wallpaper if necessary, as its usually not the best idea to paint over wallpaper instead. Very often wallpaper will begin to curl a way from the wall eventually and can run your beautiful paint job.

At this point you will need to remove any paint that is chipping or peeling by scraping or sanding it off. The most important thing to keep in mind at this point is to only remove the old paint and not part of the surface itself. If the previous surface was glossy, then be sure to rough it up with some sandpaper before applying the paint.

After you are finished with scraping and sanding the walls and trim, now is the time to make sure that all the painted surfaces are clean, by washing them down with a phosphate free degreaser or cleanser. If there are mildewed areas, include some chlorine bleach in your solution to help kill the mildew. After this, let everything dry out for the next 24 hours or so.

While the room is drying, you can be masking off any areas that need to be protected. For instance, masking off the doorway if it will be a different color from the wall. If you are using a brush for painting, the kind of masking tape that you choose can be important. Most home improvement stores sell what is called “painters tape” that prevents paint from seeping through to the surface underneath and yet is still easy to remove.

Once all of this is done, you can get started with your paint job. The best way to start is to cut in all of the edges of the room first. This usually means using a brush to paint the first 3 or 4 inches in from all edges of the walls. Once you have the wall outlined with the new paint color, you can then use a roller to finish off the wall easily and quickly.

Painting your own walls and trim is a simple home improvement task if you approach it in an organized way. It’s also well within the reach of almost all homeowners to be able to turn out an excellent, high-quality paint job. So why not pick a wall and get started right away?

It is the antithesis to the “spam” approach (unsolicited commercial emails) which achieves extremely poor results and simply annoys anyone unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end.

But which search engine should you optimise for? The search engine of choice at the
moment is Google. There are two good reasons for this. Firstly, Google is the most popular search engine on the Internet today. It is known for the quality and relevance of its search results, and so people trust it. Secondly, over the last couple of years Google has joined alliances with other search engines and directories. Yahoo, the worlds most popular directory, uses Googles database, so if you have a first page listing on Google you are likely to have a first page listing on Yahoo as well.

AOL and Netscape also share Googles search findings, so youll have similar search
results on the AOL and Netscape databases. Other lesser databases also rely on Google,
so that if you are well represented on Google, then youll be well represented on over sixty per cent of Internet search facilities.

You should also obtain a listing on the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org) which is not much known about but very well respected in the search engine optimisation industry. The Open Directory does not use the normal search engine “spiders” or robot searchers; instead it uses over thirty thousand volunteer human editors who are ostensibly experts in their own fields. The theory behind this is that it ensures relevancy, accuracy and quality of all listings. A listing in DMOZ will therefore ensure a listing on Google and probably earn you an enhanced ranking there. Then all the others, like Yahoo, AOL, Netscape and the rest are bound to follow.

Optimisation is everything. The Applied Web Marketing website itself has the number
one position on Google out of 1.47 million search results for the search term “applied
web marketing”.

After optimisation is the submission process. Perceived wisdom of the moment says it is best to submit manually. Manual submissions to dozens of search engines and
directories can be very time-consuming, however. There are some good automated and
semi-automated software packages available out there to do the submissions for you.
But for the major players do find the time for manual submissions. Some search
engines, for example Alta Vista, make it impossible for automated submission by
software programs, because of individualised text codes that must be entered by hand at the start of the submission process, so you have to submit to Alta Vista manually as well. But that just takes about three minutes.

Dont bother with ads that say that they can “blast your web site to 500,000 search
engines”. There arent that many search engines; theres only a few hundred in total, and only about a dozen of any major importance. Youll just pay your money and be very disappointed. Most of these so-called search engines are link farms, FFA or free-for-all sites, which nobody every looks at, and which are responsible chiefly for sending out spam. If you link to such web sites you risk being penalised by the bona fide search engines.

The next thing to have lots of is patience. A listing on Google should probably appear
within a couple of weeks if you have optimised your pages properly (incidentally, if you have multiple pages on your web site, as is mostly the case, it is important only to submit the index or home page, and let Googles spider “Googlebot” to find and index the other pages itself using the links that you should have set up on your site.

How to get big results with super-cheap fliers. Kevin NunleyRita started her home-based business after a long illness. Her insurance wouldn’t cover all her medical costs. She figured she could bridge the difference by selling her popular gift mugs.

Friends and the hospital staff had been delighted with them. She found herself busily filling orders for her customers’ relatives and associates.

“Wow,” she thought. “This could be the answer to my prayers. Selling my gift mugs could earn the extra money I need each month.”

One problem remained. In order to make the plan work, Rita needed lots of new customers. Word-of-mouth from friends and past clients was wonderful, but she needed a more powerful way to get the word out quickly.

A man at an ad agency told her to have nice brochures printed, mail them to hundreds of businesses, and place a weekly ad in the Sunday newspaper.

“But you don’t understand,” she protested. “Anything I spend on marketing has to come out of the grocery money. I can’t afford any of the conventional marketing options you’re talking about.”

It’s a situation that most of us have been in at one time or another. All the wonderful marketing ideas the experts talk about–radio ads, mass mailings, card decks–all take money. They require more money than we can spend without sinking down the debt drain.

Here’s one of my favorite solutions to the “no money” marketing crunch. For about 20 dollars you can have your corner copy shop print up 1000 fliers. A cheaper, more effective way to market has never been invented. A well-designed flier is like a full-page ad delivered directly to your carefully targeted prospect. No multi-thousand dollar newspaper ad can make that claim.

Keep your flier copy simple and to the point. Your prospect may only glance at it before tossing it in the trash. You must make your offer within the first three seconds as her eyes run over the page. Start with a banner headline that sells the benefits your product, service, or organization will bring the prospect. Let them know how their life will be easier, happier, or more successful after they have bought from you.

Instruct the potential customer how to buy what you sell. A short “call me today!” or “stop by our store at lunch!” greatly increases your response. Include your name, phone, fax, email, website, location, hours–and anything else that makes it super easy for the prospect to contact you.

It costs no more to have your flier copied on colored paper, so choose a color that grabs attention but won’t make your copy hard to read. Lighter colors are best.

Many successful fliers have no pictures. Line drawings are easily copied. A photo needs to be half-toned first to give a clear photocopied reproduction. Your copy shop can prepare the photo for you. Also pay attention to the quality of the copier. Some of the newer, better maintained machines turn out photo copies that look as good as offset. The better copy shops often charge slightly more, and you may find the increase in copy quality well worth the slight increase in price.

Many shops have machines that staple rubber bands to each copy. This makes it easy to attach your flier to door knobs at homes and businesses. Be aggressive, but polite, when distributing your flier. Leave no stone unturned. Drop the fliers off on car windshields, under doors, on counters, light poles, community and office bulletin boards, and at schools.

Enlist the help of young people and youth groups to go door to door for you. Tell others with fliers that you will pass their’s around if they do the same with you.

I once put one of my fliers on a light pole in San Francisco. A year later a friend called in hysterics. “You’re in StarTrek IV!” While shooting on location, the movie crew had left my flier in the background of a scene. There was my photo and flier displayed prominently between Spock and Kirk. My message reached millions world-wide for the cost of a single copy–2 cents.

And that’s my two cents about fliers–one of the world’s cheapest publicity weapons.

A CHILD’s FIRST GUITAR

You’ve known for years that your child had an ear for music. The time has come to
begin music lessons and he says the guitar is his instrument of choice.
No reason for you to worry, there’s no rule that says bad habits and guitar playing have to go
hand in hand! The guitar is a versatile instrument that he can enjoy playing for the
rest of his life.

WHAT KIND OF GUITAR WILL I NEED?

A common mistake I see parents make is buying a poorly made guitar so they will not have
wasted a large sum of money if their child decides the guitar is not the instrument for him.

To start a child out on a guitar that has poor tone and is difficult to play is practically
a roadmap for failure. Mastering the guitar is not a simple task. A child deserves some
reward when he does something right and this is something only a quality instrument can give.

Buy a guitar suitable for the age and size of the child. The neck and body must be the
right size the child’s hands and arm length. For younger childer (10 and younger) three quarter
(3/4) size guitars are available.

ACOUSTIC OR ELECTRIC?

I’m sticking my neck out on this one, but for instant gratification you can’t beat an
electric rig. In addition to a guitar, you will need to buy a small amplifier and this will
stop some parents in their tracks, but hear me out. A lesson or two will focus on setup of
the rig and what the knobs on the guitar and amp are for, but an electric is easier to play
and a kid can get a few good sounds out of the guitar much faster. You can always branch out
into acoustic later once the fingers get stronger and more conditioned.

NEW OR USED?

There’s nothing wrong with buying a used guitar that’s in good playing condition.
Guitars are not like cars; a good guitar having been handled with reasonable care improves
with age. Look at the guitars that the professionals play. Do those instruments look brand
new to you? Hardly

Cruise the pawnshops, Ebay and the classifieds for possibilities. Of course these avenues
have a huge “Buyer Beware” sign on the corner. No returns allowed. Do you have a friend
that plays guitar? If this is the case, I’m sure that he won’t mind if you ask him to go by
the pawnshop or to the garage sale with you, play the guitar you found and give you an opinion.

Go to the guitar forums on the internet and see what the others have to say about the
instrument that you are considering. Expect to see contradicting opinions. But if a
large percentage of the posters say any given guitar is a piece of junk it would be a good
idea to look for another axe.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT THE GUITAR’S WORTH?

Try checking on Ebay to see what guitars comparable to the one you are looking at have sold
for recently. It’s hard to know if you are comparing apples to apples even when comparing
identical model numbers of identical brands but you can get a general idea. You can check
the Blue Book of Electric Guitars, Acoustic Guitars and the Blue Book of Amps for a value,
but again these figures are merely guidelines.

WHERE DO I GO FOR HELP?

While the advice that can be obtained at a local music store can be invaluable before
you take the suggestions made by the salesperson you should ask the following question:
Are you a guitar player? If the answer to your question is no, ask for a salesperson
that plays guitar to help you or go and get that guitar playing friend to help you choose.

That’s one of the perks of playing guitar, the friendships you make along the way.

The Least Marketing You Can Do - and Still Have a Successful Small Business

Why do small business owners get such poor results from their marketing? You can sum this up in three reasons: They don’t know what to do, or they don’t know how to do it. Sometimes, even when they know both of these, they just don’t do it!

Not marketing is bad for business.

Marketing is by far the most misunderstood aspect of small business. Many people think it’s selling, which it isn’t. Some people avoid doing marketing, because they fear it’s too pushy and will make them feel needy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you love your business and love your customers, you can love marketing. After all, it’s just talking to people you love about something you love, which is your vocation.

Convinced? OK, maybe not yet. Let’s take a look at the three elements of marketing that are the absolute minimum you can do and still have a successful business.

1. Marketing is about creating awareness in your target audience.
   Unfortunately, most people don’t have psychic powers to sense that you are out there, available to help them.

   Instead, we have to make them aware of ourselves. And then, we need to communicate to them in a way that lets them know how they will benefit from whatever we do.

   So the first piece of this is a target audience. Since I don’t like the idea of shooting my audience with an arrow or a bullet, I prefer the term “intended audience.” Whom do I intend to serve in my business?

   Again, we have to be specific. “Everyone,” “people” and other general terms like this are no good. Even “women” is too general. What kind of women are they? “Brides-to-be who want to capture their wedding memories on film” is better. “Mothers of children with autism” works well, too.

   Articulating your intended audience with precision is one of the three things you must do. You will not be successful if you don’t do this step.

2. Now that you know who they are, how will you reach them? Where do they go? What do they read? How could they find out about you?

   If you’re a restaurant, you may rely on nothing more than an excellent location to create awareness (like in a food court in a mall). Most of us have to do more.

   A residential cleaning service may put up flyers at the supermarket or hang something on neighborhood doorknobs. A financial planner may attend networking events or speak at trade association meetings. A catering company could advertise in a local bridal magazine. A pressure washing service may go door-to-door, knocking.

   Getting in front of your audience - whether literally in person, with an ad or an article, or through product sampling - is the second thing you must do. Again, no success without this step.

3. The third and final “least marketing you can do” is to craft a message. If you know your intended audience and get in front of them, what will you say - or broadly, communicate - to them? How will they know that what you are offering is something they should buy?

   The core part of your message is your value statement. This is when you tell your intended audience why you are exactly the right choice for them. Think beyond your process ? what you do and how you do it ? to the final result, the benefit; think big!

   Recently, a hotel events planner gave her value statement this way: “When you’re planning a business meeting and there’s no room for mistakes, we ensure a seamless event.” The caterer we talked about could specialize in vegetarian meals, and might say: “I offer vegetarian meals that are so delicious, even the carnivores will want seconds.”

   You can vary your message all you want, but the requirement is that there is one. Be sure, when you have the awareness of your intended audience, they leave not with a question mark over their heads, but with an understanding of your value.

Now, that is the least marketing you can do and still be successful.

Fancy coming up to my bedroom? There isnt a chair but the beds comfy. You can lie down on it if you like but take the pink nylon bedspread off first or my ol ladyll go bananas and knock you for six!

So what do you think then? Do you like my room? I’m a teenager now y’know - youll find no daft kittens on my wallpaper, thank you! Oh no, those huge orange and pink flowers are very modern, especially as theyre teamed with a bright pink nylon carpet and orange curtains. But have you noticed the ceiling? Every other polystyrene ceiling tiles painted orange. Is that cool or what?

So now youre here, what do you fancy doing? Oh, you want to look in my wardrobe? Hmmm there are a few embarrassments in there, but theyll probably be stuffed at the back so you wont see them and hopefully Ill have something there to impress you with. How would I live with the shame if you thought my clothes werent trendy?

Its quite a nice wardrobe isnt it? Notice the agreeable combination of white and teak formica? And what do you think of those funky looking V-shaped brass look knobs? Yes, I realise that some of the brass colours flaking off and you can see the plastic underneath, but on the whole its nice, dont you think?

Im just gonna have to move this whopping great velvet donkey out of the way or I wont get the wardrobe door open. My uncle went to Spain yknow, on one of those package tours that are all the rage at the moment. Went on a plane he did, and brought me back this donkey. Its stuffed with straw and its plastic eyes come out but were not fussed about safety standards and all that so I was dead chuffed with it. Theres a little flamenco lady on the dressing table, if youre interested. Be careful not to mess up her dress though.

Sorry? What did you say? Oh, youre still waiting to see my gear! Ill just get some out for you and chuck em on the bed. Those striped tank tops are nice arent they? The brown, orange and yellow ones really nice, but the purple and pink ones my favourite. I usually wear it with this pink suede mini skirt. Mind you, lurex is all the rage at the moment, so I wear these black and silver bell-bottoms quite a bit too, usually with this black satin blouse and my white leather-look Donny Osmond cap. Not that I like Donny Osmond, but the caps cool. The trousers look a bit long but thats because theyre made to be worn with platform shoes. Mum says Ill break my ankle wearing em, but if she thinks Im gonna wear those awful Clarks t-bar shoes she bought me, shes got another think coming. Oh look, my old red bibbed hotpants! Id almost forgotten I had those. Theyve kind of gone out of fashion a bit now, but I lived and died in them last summer. To be honest, Im trying to persuade my mum to buy me a mohair tonic skirt. Yknow, that iridescent material thats all the go at the moment? My mates got a suit, but I know I wont get that so a skirts gonna have to do. Ill need a Ben Sherman to go with it though.

Ive got some t-shirts and things in my dressing table drawers, and if you like, you can have a look through my make-up bag. The glitter eye shadows pretty cool, especially the purple one. If you cant find it on the dressing table itll be on the floor next to my hairdryer. Yknow, one of those with a huge plastic hood that fills up with warm air when you attach it to the blower. I used to wish my mum would buy me a proper hairdryer though, cos getting your hair to flick under at the bottom with one of those isnt easy yknow, but since I had my hair cut in a DA (ducks arse - so named because of the layering at the back) I dont really use it much.

Oh, careful! You just knocked my jewellery box down. Its mostly tat but I like the chokers, especially the royal blue velvet one with a cameo stuck on the front. I wear the mood ring sometimes too.

Hold on a second. Dont open that cupboard or everythingll fall out. Its just full of old Jackie and Popswop magazines and old games. What games? Oh, yknow, the usual sort of thing mousetrap and ker-plunk are in there, and I think Ive still got Twister. Theres a pair of clackers in there too, but mum doesnt like me using them. She says theyre dangerous, that you can break your fingers with em, but I think its just the racket they make that she cant stand. Look please dont open it. Oh no! Youve gone and found my old Cindy dolls. No, I dont play with them anymore, but I havent the heart to chuck em either. I used to have a Tiny Tears doll too yknow, but my so-called friend pulled her head off. If you fed her a bottle of water she actually peed herself.

Look, why dont we just listen to some music? Ive got a cassette player on the shelf and Ive taped some really good tracks off my albums. We only have a radiogram downstairs so I cant do any direct taping, but holding the microphone close enough to the speakers works pretty well. Thats how I get music off the radio yknow. The radiogram sods up your records a bit, but only because of the stacking. When you keep dropping them down on each other they end up scratched. Its always a laugh playing a 33rpm album at 45 though. Ours has 75rpm on it too, so mum can play her old Mario Lanza LPs. I wish she wouldnt though. Dad says hes gonna get a proper music centre, one with a clear vinyl lid, but it hasnt happened yet.

Heres a good cassette. Ill just pop it on. Thats the dog barking in the background, but you can still hear the music ok. Im a bit fed-up with Sweet now coz my mate kept playing Ballroom Blitz over and over for two whole days, so Ill just fast forward past that one. There, Alvin Stardusts better. Oo, oo, my cooca choo nah nah nah. The Glitterband are the best though. Theyre Garys backing band but have become quite famous in their own right since releasing Angel Face. The drummers drop dead gorgeous. Oh just the thought of those biceps! Ive been to a few of their concerts yknow and met a couple of the band. Not Pete though, I’m still working on that. Its dead easy to find our where pop stars live you just look em up in the phone book. Hardly anybodys ex-directory. I bet theyve got those cool-looking tow-tone Trimfones too.

Oh dont put that tape on. Its just old Jackson 5 and David Cassidy stuff. Yknow, somebody predicted that Michael Jacksons skin would eventually turn white but I dont believe it. Here put this one on instead. Its full of Rubettes, Mud, Wizzard and T-Rex. Did I tell you about my mates big sisters friend? Evidently shes a Rubette groupie! Her and her mate follow them around on tour and sleep with them after concerts. Can you believe that? Id call them slappers but the term hasnt been invented yet so tartsll have to do. Some of the boys would probably call them slags but I hate that word.

Anyway, Ive gotta go out soon. My dads driving me round to my mates house in his Cortina (I wish hed get a Capri) cos were going to the pictures to see Stardust tonight. David Essex is in it yknow. Oh, hes got gorgeous eyes! I hung some furry dice in my dads car once, but he took them out. The man just doesnt have taste!

Mary was dumped by her boyfriend. Everywhere that Mary went the gossip was sure to go. Her work mates were of no help whatsoever. When she got within hearing distance of them, they’d pretend to be nice to her. And he was tired of hearing the same old phrase over and over…

“Don’t worry girl, there’s lots of other fish in the sea…”

The day dragged on and on. The paperwork was unrelenting. The boss was a pain, the stupid secretary kept staring at her, the jerk in the next cubicle was already trying to ask her out, the copier was messed up because someone had photocopied his butt as a prank… one of the major reasons why office copiers quit working. Mary was annoyed!

Finally the workday was over! She went home, locked herself in the house, ripped the phone cord out of the wall, and isolated herself from the rest of the world, sinking deeper into the Sea of Self-Pity. “Who cares about the other fish? I want the one that got away!” she muttered to herself. All that wasted time, the waiting for the right fish to come. Waiting and baiting, luring and scoring…

…And then the yanking away! Another trophy fish… Gone.

She grabbed her diary and pen from under her bed and made herself as comfortable as possible. She jotted her thoughts…

their books and creative projects, I’ve noticed a phenomenon
that I’ll call “Author’s Block.” Would-be writers can, indeed,
sit down and work when pressed to it. The problem is that
they’re not so sure they want the pressure of being an author.
But they do want it. But they don’t. And so on.

Ah, the agony of getting on with your book.

Well, I’m here to diffuse that situation with a list of the key
reasons we have trouble sticking to our writing or other
creative projects. Perhaps this will help the next time you find
yourself polishing doorknobs instead of sitting down to work.

You Lie To Yourself About Why You Can’t Write The Book

You think your stalling is about lack of time, or too much
pressure at work, or not enough solitude in the evening. But
guess what? Chances are a deeper, darker reason may be at play,
like ‘I’m not supposed to be bigger than Mom’ or ‘What if this
thing really takes off?’

You Fear The Impact Your Book Could Have

Sometimes when I coach writers in my Self-Help Author’s Crash
Course I’ll ask them what’s impeding their progress. And after
some probing, it will come out that they’re afraid of the big
exposure a book can have if it takes off. I’m here to assure you
that should that happen, (and chances are your book will not
unleash wild mobs of millions) you will be able to handle it.
How do I know? On that deep level where psyche meets karma, you
won’t create a single reader more than you’re ready to receive.

You Think Your Book Doesn’t Matter, So Why Bother?

One writer I know put this succinctly: “I’ve tried getting up at
5AM to write, or staying up late, or even leaving my home, but
none of it works. I have this tired feeling that none of my
effort is going to amount to a hill of beans.” In fact, writing
and publication can be an entirely self-determined activity
these days. If the publishing pundits don’t go for your book,
there’s always the option of self-publishing paperback editions
or e-books and selling them on online booksellers or your
website. In other words, your book DOES matter, and you really
have no excuse. (Acid test: if the book keeps on patiently
urging you to sit down and write it for months and even years,
chances are you’d better do it.)

You Think You Don’t Know How To Write A Book

Guess what? Neither does any other first time writer. And that
may be a wonderful thing. As a beginner, you don’t approach your
book project with a carload of professional expectations and
demands from your process. You can just be open, like well, a
nice blank book. All you really need is your intuition to guide
you, and the will to write your book as honestly as you can.

You Have No Support

You need someone in your corner, cheering you on, to get through
the long and somewhat tiring process of birthing a book. Because
writers need a way to show up and be accountable for their
progress. They need someone to keep saying, ‘Yes, you really can
do this,” or even “How’s it going?” Minds can be tricky and
difficult when fully challenged by something like a book. And
steady external support is the best way around that.

You’re Afraid You’ll Run Out Of Material

There isn’t a writer out there who hasn’t had this fear. And I’m
here to say that if you just stay loose and open, and willing to
receive the ideas, they will show up. All you have to do is
commit - really sit down, and begin to bring that book into
being - and the work will magically appear. Sometimes it won’t
flow that easily, and sometimes it will scare you with its speed
and power. But it will, indeed, show up.

You Think ‘Who Am I to Write a Book?’

And yet, you are the perfect person to write your book, because
you’re the one chosen to receive this material. (You don’t have
to be spiritually inclined to believe this.) I personally
believe that books are given to us when we’re ready to receive
them and when we do, our lives are changed by that process.

You Fear Uncomfortable Moments

Ah, but that’s the most exciting thing about writing your book.
You will be given challenges and lessons that just seem
untenable along the way. And if you’re committed enough, you’ll
rise above them and so become stronger in the process. This is
especially true for self-help books: we naturally write what we
need to learn.

Awareness is the first step to diffusing your fears. Meanwhile,
PLEASE do get on with your book despite your misgivings. Not
only do you deserve this work - so do we.

Germs In The Kitchen

Every day you see television commercials for the latest germ-killing products on the market. Companies are constantly reminding you of the pesky, persistent bacteria that apparently attacks your home throughout the day. It’s remarkable that something so small, that you can only see with it a microscope, can be so harmful! But germs are real. However, you have to know what they are exactly to truly combat them. Here’s a guide to germs and how you can keep them out of your kitchen in particular.

Bathrooms have a bad reputation for hosting threatening germs, but this reputation is not really earned. Kitchens are where the majority of germs in your house are located. And that’s why it’s so important not to ignore them. It’s easy to forget that the invisible little buggers are lurking behind every corner, but if you do, they will certainly make your life a lot tougher.

The reason you can kill a germ, is because it is indeed a living organism! There are four kinds of germs: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Many germs may invade plants, animals and humans temporarily and with little consequence, and some germs are even good! For example, there is bacteria in out intestines that help us digest our food. Also, doctors are able to engineer medicines and vaccines with the help of bacteria. But for the most part, if germs decide to hang their hat in your body, they will try to take over. Ever been stuck in bed with the flu? If you answered ?yes,? then you were infected by a virus. Or maybe you’ve had an ear infection! The culprit was bacteria in that case. Germs consume your much-needed energy and nutrients and produce nasty toxins; toxins that cause those classic symptoms of sickness, like sore throat and coughing. So germs, for the most part, are not our friends.

They are everywhere though. And in places where you store food, like the kitchen, this can be a unique problem.

The best way to prevent germs from invading your body is to simply wash your hands often. Germs are typically transferred from person to person. If someone coughs on your or even just touches you, those nettlesome germs may hop from them to you. This is why door knobs and other objects that people commonly touch are especially germ-ridden. By simply washing your hands with soap often, however, you can kill germs before they have a chance to make you sick. If you’ve just pet your dog or coughed, then you are more vulnerable to germs, so wash your hands. It’s as plain as that.

So, in the kitchen, the same rule applies. Remember to wash your hands often and always before you prepare food. However, there’s a bit more you can do than that. Here are some steps you can take to keeping your kitchen nice and clean, so that those malicious germs don’t stand a chance.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a neat freak to create a healthy environment for your family. In addition to washing your hands frequently (with soap and warm water), you can use the following tips to ensure those germs die young.

Your counters and sink are a breeding ground for germs. Because your hands, food, utensils, rags, etc, will all grace the counter tops and the sink, you have to keep them clean. Don’t cry over spilled milk. Just clean it up immediately!

What you use to clean the counters and sink is not as important as you might think. A sponge or rag or a one-time wipe will all work perfectly. The key is to keep them clean too! Throw that sponge or rag in the washer often. You can also soak your dishcloths in warm, soapy water when they’re not being used. The worst thing you can do is clean up your kitchen with a dirty dishcloth. This is why those throwaway disinfectants can be really advantageous! (Always use disinfectant sprays, as well, to go along with your other cleaning supplies.) Remember that warm water and soap are a germ’s enemies.

Moreover, be wary of cutting boards. The nooks and crannies in your home are commonly invaded by germs, until they can find a better, living host. When you use a cutting board, you will likely make small dents into it with your knife, and these small crevices lure germs. So make sure that you scrub your cutting board hard after every single use.

Obviously you want your dishes to be spic and span. Thankfully, we have dishwashers these days that do the trick. It can never hurt to give the dishes a little rub with a clean dishcloth before putting them away in the dishwasher however.

Another surprising piece of advice is that paper towels and cups are better than the alternative. You may want to dry off your hands with that cloth towel or drink from that glass. However, sharing hand towels and drinking glasses is the first thing germs want you to do! Why not buy some cheap dispensable paper cups to keep around the kitchen and invest in paper towels? It’s a really simple way to prevent those germs from traveling.

Also keep in mind that a room where food and water are common, you have to be extra careful. Damp areas can produce fungi and food that’s left out too long will encourage the growth of bacteria.

So, instead of fretting about how clean your toilet bowl is or wiping that sponge over your counter top 20 times in a row, just take into consideration these tips and your kitchen will be less inviting for those ugly germs. Yes, you probably will come down with a cold every once in a while, but you certainly can be on the offense more often than not if you know where to find and kill those germs!

As I’m preparing to put my band together to tour I am also building my arsenal of tools to play electric. My financial situation is limited and so I have to be very careful about what I purchase. I roughly need about four or five items in my chain. The first is the Crybaby, the second my distortion, third a delay and fourth a multieffects processor that I can program in about twelve “way out there” patches that suit my style. After spending a few hours reading up on delay pedals I came across the Rocktron Short Timer Digital Delay pedal. One site I visited actually had sound clips of the pedal in use and as soon as I heard the thing I knew it was exactly what I was looking for!
After shopping it online I found the average going price to be about fifty to sixty U.S. bills. Fortunately there is Ebay and I am a Ebay believer! I’ve never been ripped off by anyone there, knock on wood. Anyway….I got it in the final minutes of a auction for $35 and that included the shipping! When it arrived it looked brand new and I hooked it up immediately and I played with it for a few minutes.
There are three knobs and two switches on the unit. The first knob is the level, the second is called regeneration, and the third is the time of the delay. There is a “short” and “shorter” switch/button and then a kill switch. The unit is made of metal and sturdy as a horse. It’s built to last without a doubt. Anyway none of the knobs and switches make any extreme changes in the sound. It’s basically a cut and dry slap back sound much like David Gilmore uses. After tinkering with the unit for a few minutes checking out the extremes I immediately dialed in my sound. It was there and I’ll probably never change the settings at all.

What to Look For In a Property

There are a number of features and conditions you’ll be looking for when buying homes to rehab them. Although I can tell you what I look for in a property and give you some circumstantial recommendations, I cannot give you absolute answer as to exactly what you should be looking for in a property. Much of that will depend on the “type” of rehabber you want to be, who your buyers will be, how much money you are starting with, your area, and other personalized and situational considerations that can’t be covered in their entirety in this book.

You probably don’t know what type of rehabber you are going to be yet, and you may not know until some time into the business. The good thing is, you don’t have to pick yet and you can always change your “type” later. I consider myself to be a “major” rehabber. Usually I will buy properties that need major work – sometimes it’s practically like rebuilding the whole thing. You might find that you want to be a “minor” rehabber who just spit shines the place. You may just put in some new carpet, change the door knobs, slap some new paint on it and call it a finished project. You might go for upper-middle class homes, lower-middle class homes, working-class homes or whatever. Before long you’ll figure out what works for you in and what works in your locale.

What I Look For In a Property

1. 3 Bedrooms: Typically I’ll only buy properties with 3 bedrooms or a property that can be altered to have 3 bedrooms. In some areas though, you’ll find that a 2 bedroom home sells quite well.

1. 1000 Square Feet Minimum: Not only is it difficult to finance a smaller home (if you’re using a bank), but it’s difficult to sell a home without enough square footage. If it’s a 3 bedroom home, it better have about 1000 square feet or more.

1. Top Value in the Area: As a rehabber your goal should be to fix the property up so that it will be one par or better than the best properties in the area. Doing this will nearly ensure that you’ll fetch top dollar for the home when you sell it. A property that is by far the smallest in the area will not get the top dollar.

1. The Right Location: Location, location, location… yet again. When you’re first starting out it’s advisable to find homes in “working class” neighborhoods where the majority of the neighbors aren’t jobless and on welfare. Likewise, you probably don’t want to get into rehabbing properties that are going to be rather expensive – such as you would find in an upper-middle class neighborhood.

1. Cost of Repairs: Although you may not be perfect at estimating the cost of the rehab project in the beginning, you’ll still want to do your best to make sure your repair costs aren’t going to prevent you from making a profit in the area.

Keep Yourself Safe

If you don’t feel safe in a neighborhood, keep driving! Take someone (usually your real estate agent) with you when visiting properties. Knock loudly on the door of a vacant property before entering. Wait a few minutes before going in to give anybody there time to make their presence known. You may even want to yell into the property something such as the words “Search Party” or similar. Always be aware of who is around. If someone in the vicinity makes you nervous, leave. A plain, under-stated vehicle is your best bet. You should also leave expensive gadgets and jewelry at home. (Act like a millionaire, not like a pimp.) You will also want to be aware of animals that may have been shut in the property or have found their way in.

You can also select from a range of stained glass to add a personalized touch to the conservatory. The doors and windows can be provided with multipoint lock facility for added security. Instead of the glass if you use polycarbonate multi-ply for the roof. you will get increased insulation. They only allow the soft light to diffuse inside the room. The walls have multiple chambers and the PVC used to make the walls of the sunroom is reinforced with metals to provide more strength to the structure. This feature also makes the conservatories more durable. You can derive greater ventilation by placing the turn and tilt windows. Organizing Your Laundry

Does it seem like your laundry is multiplying:

Fear not because you are not alone! Paper, toys, and laundry are usually on the top of all my home clients list of causing chaos and frustration. According to The Tide Clothesline? at http://www.clothesline.com the average household washes 7.4 loads about 50 lbs. - per week and the average load contains 16 items. They go on to say that in a typical household, more than 6,000 articles of clothing are washed each year!

Id like you to ask yourself and answer the following questions; I hope these will help you in evaluating your situation. I have added suggestions and some thoughts for you to ponder on after the questions.

1. Who do you do laundry for? 2. Who can do their own laundry?

If youre washing for everyone in the home and you have children/spouse that can reach the knobs on the machines, ask them for HELP.

? Teach them to be responsible for their clothing and show them how to sort, wash, fold, and put away. ? Post washing and drying instructions near the machines. ? Develop a schedule for family members that can wash their own clothes.

3. What kinds of clothes are piling upchildrens, towels, sheets, etc.?
4. What help can you get from others?

? Assign and limit 1-2 towels to each family member per week.
? Wear clothes more then once. ? If you have children that are too young to do their own laundry, teach them to sort clothes and/or fold towels, underwear, socks. Depending on their age, dont expect it to be perfect but praise them for their help. ? Show children where their folded items go (make it easy for them by storing those items in bottom drawers).

5. When do you prefer to do laundry? 6. When do you have time to do laundry?

? Decide if you prefer to do laundry in the morning, in the evening, during the week, or only on weekends. ? Pick a day and time that youre not going to be constantly interrupted or tempted to play. ? Place yourself on a schedule and system if you cant get help.
? Time yourself and your machines cycles; sort, wash, machine or line dry, fold, sort and put away to help you determine how much time you need for each load. ? Wash, dry, and put away by person or room.

Sample schedules:

Stay at home two loads a day schedule: If you stay or work from home try starting a wash load in the morning while the coffee is brewing, throw that load in the dryer or hang at lunch time, and start another wash load. Right before or after dinner, take the dried load out and put the other load in. Fold while dinner is cooking, watching the news, or waiting for pages to load on the Internet. Get the last load out and fold before going to bed. Make sure you put each person/rooms in a sorted pile to make putting away quicker and more efficient. (My mom use to use the couch, bed, or a table to fold and sort onto, she would then pile the piles into the basket by person and room and distribute them on our beds for us to put away).

Away from home one load a day schedule: If you go out to work you can try throwing in a wash load before going to bed at night and tossing them in the dryer before leaving for work. As soon as you walk in the door, get them out of the dryer and fold while youre checking your phone messages or email. Put away before retiring for the night.

7. Where is your washer/dryer located? 8. Where does everyone put his or her dirty clothes? 9. Where do you like to or would like to fold clothes?

? Your washer and dryer might not be located in a convenient place, such as the basement. More and more builders are starting to place these machines in hallways, kitchens, and even bathrooms. If you have the funds and space, you might look into relocating your machines. ? Install a laundry shoot in the bathroom closet or area that is convenient for everyone to use. If that isnt possible, designate a place for everyone in the home to put his or her dirty clothes.
? Find a place in the home where you are comfortable and have plenty of room to spread out and sort/fold clean clothes.

10. Why are you responsible for everyone clothes?

You are the only one that can answer this one .

11. How often do you want to do laundry?

? Decide if you want (I know, no one wants to do laundry) to do laundry daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Then ask if you need to or are you able to.

12. How many articles of clothing does each family member REALLY need per week, season, and special occasion?

? This is the time to be REALLY HONEST with yourself and will depend on your answer to # 11. How many articles of play, casual, dressy, work, holiday, seasonal, and special occasion outfits does each family member need? If they have too many, you will never stay ahead of the dirty clothes.
? Recycle, sell, or donate clothes that arent being used or that you have an abundance of. ? If you or your family are putting on and taking something off (and throwing it in the dirty clothes) because it doesnt fit right, look right, or you/they dont really like itget RID of it!

Laundry Tips:
Always try and wash a full load. Wash hand towels and smaller items of same color range with large articles, such as sheets and table cloths. Make sure you and others know how to use the proper cycles on machines to minimize wrinkling. Put a clothes rack by the dryer and hang clothes as they come out; put away by person/room. If you cant hear the buzzers on the machines or tend to lose track of time, set a timer for the length of the cycle and keep near you.
Clothes that need ironing should be washed first so you can iron while the other loads are being done. Wash delicate, underclothes, and hand washables while taking a shower.

Please remember that anything you try you MUST give it a chance to work, at least a month. If you find something not working, try another schedule or approach for another month until your clothes stop multiplying.

AH! ASPARAGUSArleen M. Kaptur

During this very beautiful time of year, fresh green spears of asparagus
add not only nutritional value to our meals, but supply a stunning color,
texture, and delight to the table.

If you can grow your own asparagus, more power to you. If not, purchase
them at your local grocer, but take advantage of their appealing taste and
you will be an asparagus lover. Let your family and especially your children try asparagus - preparing it in different ways will add variety
as well as giving them an opportunity to pick and choose their favorites.

So heres to asparagus - ENJOY.

ASPARAGUS POLONAISE -

1 stick of butter

1/4 cup dried white bread crumbs

1 lb. of fresh asparagus

1 hard-cooked egg, finely chopped

1 tbs. fresh parsley, chopped very finely

In a pan, over medium heat, cook asparagus in boiling, salted water until
tender, about 8 mins. Drain and keep warm.

Melt the butter in a small pan. Add the crumbs and cook until the butter
foams, but does not brown.

On a platter, place the cooked spears of asparagus. Sprinkle the hard-cooked
egg over the spears, then the parsley. Spoon the buttered bread crumbs over
the parsley and serve.

Extra-Special Hint:

On party bread, spread a small amount of mayonnaise. Top each piece of
bread with a small leaf of lettuce, Top with a bit of tuna (packed in water)
that has been drained, a spear of cooked asparagus, and a slice of tomato.
You have a very stunning party sandwich for your guests to enjoy.

ELEGANT FILLET OF SOLE AND ASPARAGUS

1 can (10/3/4oz. condensed cream of celery soup

1/2 cup milk

1 cup (4 ozs.) shredded Swiss cheese

1/2 tsp. dried basil, crushed

1/4 tsp. seasoned salt

1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

2 cups baby carrots, cooked and drained

1 lb. fresh asparagus, cooked an drained 1 lb. unbreaded sole fillets, (if using frozen, please defrost totally and dry
with paper toweling before using

Preheat oven to 375. In a small bowl, combine the undiluted soup, milk, one-half
of the Swiss cheese, and all the seasonings. Set aside.

In an 8×12 baking pan, combine the carrots, asparagus.

Roll your fish fillets and place them upright along the center of the baking pan.
Spoon the vegetable medley around the bundles of fish. Pour your soup mixture
over the entire casserole. Bake, covered, for about 30 mins. or until
the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork.

After 30 mins. top the fish only with the remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered
for 3 mins.

This is true company faire that will make your guests feel very special.

ASPARAGUS SALAD -

1-1/2 cups vegetable oil (canola, if possible)

1/2 cup white vinegar (do not use cider)

2 tsp. Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. pepper

1/4 cup chopped green/or red bell pepper

or a combination of both

1/4 cup chopped green onions (scallions)

2 lbs. fresh asparagus, cooked and drained

2 tomatoes, sliced

a few slices of red radishes (optional)

1/2 cucumber sliced thinly (optional)

1 tbs. chopped fresh curly parsley

In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. Add
the bell pepper, parsley, green onions, cucumber, and radishes, if using. Place
the asparagus spears in a glass bowl. Pour the dressing with the vegetables
over the asparagus. Cover and chill overnight.

When ready to serve, drain the asparagus by using a slotted spoon and arrange
them on a plate lined with lettuce leaves. Garnish with the tomato slices.

Pour by spoon some of the dressing over the asparagus and tomato slices,
including some of the vegetables in the dressing.

Place the remainder of the dressing in a small bowl so that guests can add
more if they would like to.

You have a very nice luncheon salad or a pretty dinner salad.

Either way enjoy the taste of asparagus!

RHUBARB-GIFT FROM THE GARDENArleen M. Kaptur

Rhubarb - you either love it or not. There doesnt seem to be any
in-between when it comes to this fruit that lends itself from a pale
pink to a ruby red hue.

This strange looking plant with its giant leaves and pink stems comes
originally to us from China and Tibet. These ancient cultures used the
rhubarb for medicinal purposes. Its leaves are very toxic, and they should
never be eaten.

Here are a few country-fair recipes for rhubarb - pick your favorite
and see if your family can decide if they are rhubarb enthusiasts.

RHUBARB CREAM PIE -

2 cups rhubarb, washed, dried, and cut into 1 inch pieces

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tbs. all-purpose flour

1/2 cup milk

2 eggs, separated

Mix the sugar, flour, milk and egg yolks together. Pour this mixture over
the cut rhubarb and mix together well. Pour into an unbaked pie shell
and bake in a 425 degree oven until the fruit is tender and the filling is
a custard consistency.

You can add meringue to the baked pie using the egg whites and 3
tbs. of sugar.

Brown in the oven for about 10 mins.

Cool and serve.

RHUBARB COOKIE TREAT

4 cups trimmed, washed, and diced rhubarb

2 cups sugar divided

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

2 tbs. sweet-cream butter

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp. salt

Heat oven to 350. Using a pre-buttered baking pan, place diced rhubarb in pan
and sprinkle with 1 cup of the sugar and all of the cinnamon. Heat in oven for
about 20 mins. Remove from oven and set aside.

Cream together 2 tbs. butter and 1 cup sugar. Add the eggs, gently stir in the flour, and add the salt. Mix gently incorporating all the ingredients.
Pour this
mixture over the hot rhubarb. Bake in oven for 1 hour. Remove, cool, and cut
into squares
.

FAVORITE RHUBARB TREAT

1 cup flour

3 tbs. powdered sugar

1/2 cup sweet-cream butter

2 cups trimmed, washed, diced rhubarb

2 eggs

1-1/2 cups sugar

1/4 cup flour

1/2 cup orange juice (not concentrate)

3/4 tsp. salt

Mix the flour, powdered sugar and butter together and press into the bottom
of an ungreased 7-1/2 x 11-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 mins. Remove
from oven and set aside.

Mix the rhubarb, eggs, sugar, flour, orange juice and salt together. Pour onto the
baked crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 mins. Using a knife inserted in center, check to see if the center is set. If not, bake for an additional 5-8 mins. Test
again, and when knife comes out clean, remove, cool, and serve.

Here is a very different kind of jam. Try it - you just might make this your
favorite!

EASY RHUBARB JAM

4 cups trimmed, washed, and diced rhubarb

2 cups granulated sugar

1 (3 oz.) box raspberry jello (Do not make the jello - just use the powder)

In pan, combine all the ingredients above.

Simmer over a gentle, low heat until well cooked.

Pour into fancy glass jars.

When the jam has cooled, cover with plastic wrap and store in your
refrigerator.

Easy and tastes great!

There is nothing nicer than combining two seasonal favorites and discovering
that two good things make one great pie!

RHUBARB/STRAWBERRY PIE

1-1/2 cups rhubarb, trimmed, washed and cut into small pieces

1 cup fresh washed, trimmed, and sliced strawberries

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tbs. flour

2 tbs. sweet cream butter

1 tbs. cold milk

1 9 unbaked pie shell, ready-made or made from scratch

Combine the rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, flour, butter and milk. Gently blend
and then pour into unbaked pie shell. Dot mixture with remaining 1 tbs. butter. Cover pie with additional pie crust, or use strips of pie crust for a lattice design.

Also, if using an additional pie crust, combine equal amounts of flour (about 1/2 cup),
sugar (about 1/2 cup), and about 3 tbs. softened sweet-cream butter. Cut with pastry blender or two knives. You will get very tasty
crunchies to sprinkle on top of your pie crust. Flute the edges of the two crusts together before using the sprinkles.

Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10 mins.

Reduce oven to 350 and bake for 30 mins. or until crust/or crunchies are
lightly browned.

Remove from oven and cool on rack.

Serve with vanilla ice cream for a very special pie ala mode.

Hope these recipes make a rhubarb lover out of you and your family.

Involving live music into any corporate event is not as
easy as it seems. Besides deciding on the band, there are
4 aspects you must consider in order to have a hope of having
a successful event. They are, in the order of importance:

1) Venue

2) Agents

3) Technical Set Up

4) Band Character

In a moment I’ll tell you the details of the crucial
issues that can aggravate and potentially ruin an otherwise
beautifully accomplished occasion. It will just take a few
minutes, but as you read this page, more and more, you will
start to feel better and better about hiring live music for
your next corporate or social event. Most importantly is . . .

Venue Selection
As an event planner, your ability to keep numerous things
in mind when hiring musicians. Selection of the perfect venue
is the first ingredient you will need. This ability alone may
distinguish you as a professionals in an industry filled with
amateurs.

When choosing the venue, be certain the room size is
in proportion with the number of guests who will be attending.
I got into this business as a singing piano player. When I
am performing I need to connect with the audience. If the room
size is proportionate to the crowd size, I can do my job
successfully. If the room is too big and there are not enough
warm bodies in attendance, the audience will feel too
intimidated to approach the band. When you keep the band close
enough to your guests will feel comfortable enough to interact
with the musicians and vice versa.

Have you noticed yet that keeping the venue small so the
band can be close to your guests will increase your chances of
having a successful event? Depending on the act, you can leave
a little dance floor in front of the band. But all in all, keep
the crowd near the band and allow the band to be an integral
part of your event.

I have frequently worked with party planners who are
clueless when it comes to what size stage is needed for a
band.

“If you fail to plan ahead, then you are planning ahead
to fail.”

Here are the stage specs for various sized bands:

3 Piece - 8 feet by 16 feet

5 Piece - 16 feet by 24 feet

12 Piece - 16 feet by 32 feet

With the is newly acquired information, experienced event
planners will always prefer to go with a room with a stage
rather than just placing the band on the same level as
attendees. Proper planning for stage requirements avoids major
headaches the day of the show. Also, having the band on a stage
allows them to be seen by everyone even by the people in back.
When selecting the venue, you will also need to keep in
mind the acoustics of the room. High ceilings and flat walls
with lots of windows and no curtains to muffle the sound are
not optimal environments for bands. Work with an experienced
sound person to mix the band and equalize the room and
eliminate feedback.

Agents
There are only a handful of very few good
professional bands anymore. If you don’t know a good
booking agent, you will be hard pressed to find them. A good
agent will be the one to help you thru the minefield of
mediocre, amateurs with amps that have no volume control knobs.
As an event planner you need to figure out your event theme and
then contact a talent booking agency to see if there are bands
that fit.

The most popular bands play a wide variety of styles. A
good group of musicians knows songs from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s
and ’90s. Frank Sinatra has never gone out of style. So make
sure the band plays what we call “Jazz Standards”. Depending
on your event and your geographical location, it is either
“Country Music is King!” or “Classic Rock Rules!”. Know your
demographics before hiring a band.

As with any vendor, you get what you pay for. Let’s talk
about budget. I wonder, even as you continue to read this
report, if you realize the amount of time a band puts in before
receiving a paycheck to practicing their instruments, learning
and memorizing repertoire and coordinating lights and
choreography. Most bands require anywhere from $1,200 to
$45,000 per gig. Experienced booking agents will be able to
place the right band for the party. With any event, experience
wins every time. Ask for references and testimonials.

Technical Set Up
Once your musicians are booked, you now need to cover
logistics. Tech setup includes the movement and placement of
equipment and sound checks. Bands usually bring their own
equipment.

Amplifiers, instruments, a PA system for vocals,
lighting towers all the way down to carpet for the drums need

1. Know Your Objectives

Start by creating an organizational plan. Establish stations within your kitchen just like a restaurant does: prep area, cooking, baking and cleaning. Organize your kitchen into these four quadrants by keeping related items together in the same area.

Break the job down into sections. Try to finish one section per day. Don’t let the size of the job overwhelm you. Take it one small step at a time. Before you know it you will have finished. As the saying goes, How do you eat an elephant? You eat it one bite at a time.

6. Efficiency in design

Organize your kitchen for maximum efficiency. Place items near each other if they will be used together. For example: if your coffee maker sits on the counter, store the coffee cups, cream and sugar in the cabinet above it.

7. Never Let Clutter Back In

Once you have spent all that time organizing your kitchen, you’ll want to make sure that the clutter stays out. Set some time aside once a month to check for clutter buildup. Also spend a few minutes each night putting away anything that doesn’t belong in the kitchen. Nip that clutter in the bud before it takes root.

Crystal Radio Sets are Alive and Kicking

I was brought up under strict conditions. Bedtime was at a certain rigid time every night. Lights out meant no reading; it meant sleep. It certainly did not include listening to radio broadcasts.

But as a child of thirteen, I discovered the delights of the
crystal set. It was a frustrating affair. The workings of it
have remained a complete mystery. How, I wondered then, could a lump of gray mineral possibly capture radio waves and do so without a battery?

Now, several decades later, the answers are easy to find on the Internet here I quickly discover that crystal sets, and the parts to make them, are readily available today even though they look vastly different from the crude thing I had. In comparison, todays lookwellpositively modern.

To my amazement, according to Google there are 81,200 pages that contain the phrase crystal set.

There is even The Xtal Set Society http://www.midnightscience.com which says it is “dedicated to once again building and experimenting with radio electronics. It advertises books, parts and kits. One kit is called the Quaker Oat Box Radio Pack. It contains one roll of 24-gauge hook-up wire (100 feet), one germanium diode, one 47,000-ohm resistor, one alligator clip, and one crystal earplug. Sounds just about as basic as my old setbut I dont remember the other
instructions that come with this kit: You will need to provide your own antenna wire and oatmeal box.

The advertised price is $8.95. Do some reverse inflation
calculations and you will know better than I now remember roughly how much I paid for my set back in 1947. Any money I had in those days was earned by not spending my lunch money at school, so I know the set I had was dirt-cheap.

Radio Shack sells starter kits too. Describing a project for

It does work, and some simple modifications will enhance its performance. When he wrote four years ago, the price was $9.99. coil of wire for an antenna makes!

There was no simple method for tuning my set. I remember there was a contact of some sort, and that by moving this minuscule distances across the crystal you could, with much patience, tune in a radio station. Usually, it was faint. Fiddle with the contact and the signal would be lost and found again many times
before a signal strong enough to enjoy came in. And it would often disappear in the middle of a show for no obvious reason.

He aims and fires, but he missesand that was his last bullet. The killer reaches for him, the axe raised in his other hand, and fizzle, crackle, silence. Mutter, mutter (the latter being me)!

Now I understand I needed to pay much more attention to installing a good antenna a 50-foot piece of wire outside the house and as high as possible and that I needed a good ground. But as a 13-year-old, I simply wanted to listen under the bed covers in the dark to my favorite radio thriller.

It almost didnt matter what the program was. Each had the compelling signature music, sometimes just single musical notes, the voices with their sense of urgency, the suspense, the climax, the scripting formula. I also remember the screech of car tires in chase scenes. It was pretty gripping stuff for a small boy.

Remember how shoes were always soled in hard leather? Rubber didnt make enough noise. Doors always squeaked; silent ones would not have been much use on radio. And do I remember correctly that detectives were always men and that secretaries were always women?

Today, when I recall those days long ago, I remember the crystal radio set with its finicky connection that would fade to almost nothing at the crucial point in the story. Then it would come back just as the announcer was saying something like: So long! See you next week.
