Preparing Your Home for the Future

Live more confidently in your own home by recognizing and eliminating hidden dangers in your home. At most risk for injury, are the aging. According to the Home Safety Council, slips and falls are the leading cause of home injury death in the United States. Each year, more than 7,000 adults age 65 and older die from unintentional home injuries. Falls alone account for 66% of all home injuries for adults age 65 and older, totaling over 2.3 million accidents per year.

Taking precautionary steps to prevent accidents has been shown to reduce injuries in the aging. In the past, grab bars and other safety features were unsightly and institutional. Now, safety features are available in many models and finishes, to fit any d?cor. Most can be easily installed by a handyman or relative.

Let?s examine a key area for preventing falls and maintaining security, the entrance ways of your home. Check the following items to assess your home?s level of safety:

  • Are the stairs on any of your walkways chipped or broken?

  • Measure the width of your walkways ? would they be wide enough for a wheelchair? (standard wheelchair is 30 inches wide, 48 inches long)

  • Check all steps inside & out for steep height between risers. You may want to consider replacing steps that are too steep with a ramp, or installing a bypass ramp to your entrance.

  • Inspect all handrails for stability. You may need to have your handrails reinforced or replaced. Grab bars and handles are perfect near doorways.

  • Foyers and entrance ways are often tiled and can be slippery. Consider non-slip finishes for these surface areas. A non-slip surface can even be applied to your sidewalk if you use it often went it?s wet.

  • Check your walkway for poor lighting along walkways. Light fixtures are available with sensors that will turn on automatically. Also check walkway edges, entrances, & steps for proper lighting.

  • Is your garage well lit? Check for poor lighting around and inside the garage. The garage is also a perfect area to install lights with motion sensors.

  • To avoid tripping, check your threshold. Do you need to add tapered thresholds to outside doors?

  • Have a delayed action door closer installed on your front door, so the door will close behind you slowly while you enter the home.

  • Inspect your locks. Replace old locks with new, easier to operate models.

  • Does your home have round door knobs? Have simple lever-type door handles installed.

  • Do you have trouble juggling packages, bags and other items while unlocking and opening your door? Try installing elbow height shelving near entrances to hold parcels until the door is unlocked and open.

  • Transition areas such as front door way thresholds can be tricky to maneuver, especially for the visually impaired. Have your entry way repainted using different colors for the door, door frame, handle & doorbell.

Next month: Part 2 of our series, ?Moving Around

Taking precautionary measures now will help you to stay in your home, safe and secure for many years to come. 6 Easy Decorating Fixes

Sometimes you don’t need to spend a fortune to fix a decorating mistake or problem. In fact, easy and inexpensive solutions are more common than you may think. Here are six cheap and simple decorating fixes.

1) Paint. Need to update a room or give it some flair. Paint is the easiest and least expensive fix there is. With a gallon or two, about $50, you can give a room a brand new look.

2) Throws and pillows. Ok, so the sofa is getting worn and dated, but the budget won’t allow you to replace it yet. What to do? Casually drape some throw blankets across a corner and add some coordinating pillows. Don’t just put the throw over the back, have go on the corner, draping so it falls across an arm, part of the back, and over a cushion. We were selling our house and had redecorated the whole thing, but we couldn’t afford new couches even though the dog had snagged the fabric with his claws. Throws and pillows covered up the problem spots and made the boring couches look romantic and inviting.

3) Area rugs. Have a problem floor or a spot? Hide it with a rug. We had refinished hardwood floors in our first house, but there was a water stain smack dab in the middle of the room that no amount of standing could fix. We didn’t have the money to replace the floor so we bought a small oriental rug instead. While the rug seemed expensive at the time, it was cheaper than replacing half of the hardwood, added a warm luxurious feel to the room, and it has lasted nearly 20 years!

4) New cabinet hardware. Cabinets make a big statement in a kitchen or bath, but replacing them cost thousands of dollars. For a simple way to update and dress up cabinets, simply change the hardware. Get fancy knobs that make a statement. Spend a little extra than you may normally because remember how much you’re saving by not replacing your cabinets.

5) Slipcovers. Yes, slipcovers. No longer are these the horrid things your grandmother used. Now slipcovers come to be easily put on, sized to fit well, and designed to be attractive and modern. Do a Google search, and you’ll be surprised how many you can find.

6) Sponging or rag painting. Do you have a wall that’s been patched or had cracks repaired, but it’s just not as smooth as it once was? A great way to camouflage it is to sponge or rag paint the wall. The inherent texture of these painting techniques can hide a multitude of plaster and dry wall sins.

See; you don’t have to break the bank to easily fix some decorating problems.

Shopping For Barbeque Grills For Tailgate Parties

There is a big difference between going shopping for the barbeque grill you buy to grill your steaks, burgers and hotdogs on at home, and the barbeque grill that you go shopping for barbeque grill for tailgate parties. They have the same properties for the most part, such as flame, charcoal, and metal. That?s where the similarities end.

When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you are going to be looking for something that you can do some stainless steel cooking with. The barbeque grill system you are looking for will require some cash, so make sure you have at least $6,000 with you when you go shopping for barbeque grill for tailgating parties.

A barbeque grills, that is used for tailgating parties after a sports event of any kind, or for any flea market concession stand where you want to sell drinks, hotdogs, burgers, and perhaps corn-on-the-cob. When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgating parties you are looking for a grill that has at least six burners, and is attached to a black-steel painted trailer on two wheels that you can tow behind your car with ease.

Many of the styles you will find when you go shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties will be made of stainless steel and feature a insulated stainless steel wells where you can keep an ample supply of cold beer, cokes and cold dishes that you will serve party goes from the back end of your grill.

These mobile grills are ready to get the party rolling in about 10 minutes. They can fit in on any type of vehicle that is suitable to mount a trailer hitch to. Some people do remove the handles for the grill cooking knobs before getting on the road, because it would be a shame to arrive at your destination without them.

When shopping for barbeque grill for tailgate parties, you want to look for a grill top that is at least 48 inches and is a roll dome top. The cooking service of the grill should be over 1000 square inches. That might sound rather large, but when you have over 1000 people lined up for some of your barbeque, and they are wiling to pay you about $7 or more per sandwich, and more for ribs, then it would be a shame not to have enough cooking space to prepare good food for them to eat.

When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you should look for a cooking grate that will heat to 800 degrees quickly. Tailgate partiers are revving to go at a NASCAR race and they want their food fixed fast and properly. An 800 degree temperature will take care of all those requirements.

You should have dual 30 lb propane tanks on the barbeque grill you are planning to purchase. When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you should make sure that you have stainless steel cooking grates, two stainless steel insulated coolers with a drain and a grill that is designed for convection cooking.

Deaf Symphony-Black Garden (mt driscoll)

Deaf Symphony-Black Garden

Artist: Deaf Symphony
Title: Black Garden
Genre: Metal
Label: Matt Cerbin Music
Website: http://www.deafsymphony.com

Matt Cerbin is the ultimate D.Y.I. indie kind of guy on his new album Black Garden. He calls his band Deaf Symphony. He plays guitar, keyboards, sings, and produces the entire album. He does get some help from Larry Cox, who plays drums and helps him to turn the knobs in the studio.

I love the name of the band, Deaf Symphony. Actually, you would have to be stone deaf not to hear the symphony of metal put together on this album. Although it took me a few listens for it to agree with me, Cerbin sounds like a Rob Halford clone and that is ok because it does suit the music very well. Its interesting how he closes the album with an nice acoustic number after all the doom and gloom in the previous tracks. He sounds like an entirely different vocalist on that track, not even close to the metal Halford sound. It is obvious the man has a load of talent when you consider everything he did to make this recording happen. I mean what the hell-he brings in a drummer and that is all he needs? That is truly exceptional.

On the title track Black Garden, he plays a nifty little acoustic intro that has you wondering what is going on after burnin down the house with Scary Love Song and Vision. Not to worry though, he kicks it into high gear very quickly on that track and puts you back into the hard rockin mood that started things off. Its Cerbins way of saying, hey, I can play the acoustic guitar and be tasteful as well while still holding my ground to rock my ass off all at the same time, so listen up! I did pay attention and certainly appreciated what he did. Dark Angel is full of repetition, which annoyed me, and it does not put the singer in a good light at all. That was the only track on the album I did not care for. The meat and potatoes of the album come hammerin home with tracks 6-8. In those tracks, Phantom, Evening Mist, and Passage, you hear the core sound of the entire album. I heard the chops of Tony Iommi during his Black Sabbath days more than once during those heavy-duty songs. For me that was a total turn on. I revered Sabbath in the 70s; their music was so hard and dark, much like what you will hear on this album.

This music is meant to be played loud it is not for the faint of heart to say the least. If you loved Sabbath and Judas Priest this will be your ticket to get on that hell bound train once again. Lets roll!

Metal Detecting in the UK

A third style, the Printed Spiral, is made only by Tesoro for use with pulse
induction circuitry. It offers good sensitivity to a broader range of target
sizes and improved sensitivity to less conductive targets such as fine gold
chains. All searchcoils are electrostatically shielded and waterproof. There
are certain features needed for certain places the device is going to be
used for. If you intend to use it on the beach, the terrain wont be that
rigorous. But you are going to need waterproof protection.

If this is your first metal detector purchase, consider getting some
professional and expert advice to make sure that you have making the
right choice. Metal detectors usually come with a complete control box
containing the controls, circuitry, batteries, microprocessor, and the
speaker. Metal detectors also include a search shaft that connects it to
the coil and the control box. Metal detectors come with a control box
that contains the circuitry, controls, speaker, batteries and the
microprocessor; a shaft that connects the control box and the coil; a
search coil that actually senses the metal; and a stabilizer that keeps the
unit steady as it is moved. The basic metal detectors are easy to get used
to, with less features and buttons. Find out more about bounty hunter
metal detector today!

Metal Detecting in the UK

Metal detecting is a hobby that is not just popular in the United States. In
the United Kingdom, metal detecting is also a rather popular activity
enjoyed by many. Clubs, organizations and groups abound, along with
many popular locations that are perfect for metal detecting enthusiasts.

Metal detecting actually has a long and rich history in the United Kingdom.
Interestingly enough, the invention of metal detectors sprung not from a
recreational or leisurely need: on the contrary, it came from the need to
detect the locations of dangerous mines, so that they might be disarmed.
By the end of the Second World War, metal detectors had become
considerably sophisticated and effective. Soon after, some archaeologists
began using mine detectors in their digs and excavations, in search for
ancient metal artifacts.

By the 1950s, metal detectors began to be used to recover small items
like coins in England. The brothers Caiger-Smith used what were
previously mine detectors to recover modern as well as Roman coins in
the fields surrounding the town where they lived, in the Newbury area.
They even wrote and published their experience with metal detectors
and what these nifty gadgets could possibly accomplish in the future. The
paper sparked interest in metal detectors that would continue to grow
until the present time.

Go to your local ” do it yourself ” coin operated car wash. Look for the
place where they dump the contents of the 25 cent vacuum cleaners.
Search the piles and see what a gold mine they are for coins and rings.
Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a
great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts
with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector
should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting
at detect-metal.info.

ome detectors have more ways of adjusting the “fit” to the person. Some
of the other ways that detectors adjust are that the arm cup can be
raised or lowered, and the box containing the board and controls can be
taken off of the pole and mounted in a small pouch. Many people say to
us “I have always wanted to do this!” As with other electronic
equipments, innovations seems to always happen overnight. If you are
going to buy a metal detector today, try to know that technologies are
currently employed. You do not want to be behind the technology line,
right?

If you are planning to buy a metal detector, you should check out the
features of each before buying one. Metal detecting is a fun hobby but
having the wrong equipment can cost you time and money. Mention the
words metal detector and you’ll get completely different reactions from
different people. For instance, some people think of combing a beach in
search of coins or buried treasure.

As in most other countries, laws govern metal detecting in the UK. A
metal detecting enthusiast should be granted permission to go metal
detecting on all lands except those that are open to the public such as
parks and beaches that are not privately-owned. Otherwise, in the case
of fields and farms that are privately owned, you must ask permission first
before you search, and usually an agreement between the property
owner and the metal detecting enthusiast is made regarding any items of
value that may be found in the area.

There is also a Treasure Act and Code of Practice in the UK that every
metal detecting enthusiast should read and remember; as there are
certain items, such as coins that are older than three hundred years old,
that must be reported to the authorities when they are found. Metal
detecting is so popular in the United Kingdom that a national body has
been set up for the hobby. The national body is called the National
Council for Metal Detecting, or NCMD, and you can visit their site on
http://www.ncmd.co.uk, where you can find some very useful
information on metal detecting in the UK. A recent study proves that
hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate as x-rays in finding coins
and other metallic objects swallowed by children.

Now that you have learned the three different types of metal detector,
it??s up to you to make your choice as to what type of detector you wish
to use for your searches.

Some users put a rubber band around the knobs to keep them from
moving or becoming loose. You should buy a metal detector that is light
weight. This is important when you are detecting things on a riverbank or
body of water.

The Garrett Enforcer G-2 is the smallest body scanner and sensitive
enough to detect even the smallest of knives or guns.

The most popular one is the Super Scanner. It can detect hatpins as small
as one inch.

Porsche (paul decorative products) Chayenne interior

Porsche Chayenne interior

Porsche offers three versions of the four-door Cayenne: the Cayenne, The Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo.

The standard models of the Cayenne and Cayenne S come with features such as:
18-inch alloy wheels,
stability control given by the Porsche Stability Management,
leather seating,
power seats,
dual-zone automatic climate control and a 350-watt, 15-speaker Bose audio system.

Since it’s a true Porsche, Cayenne’s ignition switch is on the dash’s left side. The gauge cluster is nearly perfect but the climate and radio controls are indecipherable cluster of buttons and knobs.

The good thing is that the satellite steering wheel controls are standard which means that they will be easier to find. The Turbo model comes not only with additional power but also with more technical and luxury features.

Among those we enumerate: an adaptive suspension with automatic ride height and damping adjustment (Porsche Active Suspension Management), bi-HID headlights, a CD-based navigation system, heated seats front and rear, seat memory, sonar front/rear parking assist and power adjustment for the steering wheel. But the options the Cayenne offers are meant to increase functionality and personality.

These options are: four-zone climate control, bolstered sport seats, various wheel/tire upgrades and trailering preparation. With a maximum cargo capacity of 63 cubic feet, the Cayenne has slightly more capacity than the Range Rover but less than the Infiniti FX45.

Impact Of A Bird Flu Pandemic Hits Home

If the avian flu virus mutates so that the disease can be transmitted from one human to another, we will face a pandemic with the potential to kill a billion people worldwide. It is important for people to educate themselves, their family and their neighbors about bird flu and the concrete steps they can take now can to lessen the spread of the disease.

Waiting to prepare for a pandemic is like waiting for a category five hurricane to come ashore before racing to the lumber yard for plywood. A pandemic is even more dangerous than a localized natural disaster because a virus can be transported by airplane to virtually anywhere in the world within a matter of days.

Pandemic preparation has two integral components. First, you should have a basic 3 day emergency kit, just as you would for an earthquake, storm, hurricane, or other disaster. The only difference in preparing for a pandemic is that you should extend the level of preparation to last much longer. The flu lasts approximately two weeks, but it can conservatively take 6-8 weeks for it to go through a population. During this time you will need to be prepared for disruption of services just as with other large scale emergencies.

Second, is the preparation for “infection control,” it involves hygiene and barriers to contamination. Hygiene includes hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs, and daily disinfection of surfaces such as doorknobs, keyboards, and faucets. The “barrier method” of infection control requires that sick individuals be isolated and that others wear protective clothing. Only by wearing the appropriate quality masks, gloves, and goggles can the flu virus be prevented from entering through the mucosal membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Dr. Fenstersheib, the Public Health Officer for Santa Clara County, California, predicted that in the event of a pandemic, 25-35% of the population would become ill. He said, “With the burden this will place on the healthcare system and the government infrastructure, it is clear that each individual and family in our community must take on the responsibility to be prepared to care for sick family members during a pandemic. With proper supplies and instruction, home preparedness will go a long way to lessen illness and save lives.”

Tracy Ferea, Ph.D. is a published scientist whose research at Stanford University focused on the evolution of microbial genomes. She writes for BirdFluSmart.com to increase the general publics understanding of the risk of a bird flu pandemic. Bird Flu Smart’s mission is to prepare the public for a pandemic by providing both information and products, that increase preparedness.

Conservatory (von morris) Design Ideas

Conservatories have glass walls and ceilings and allow, even in the colder winter months, you to feel as though you’re outdoors with all the comforts of being inside.

A conservatory can thus be seen as a halfway point between your home and your garden, and it’s quite important that it blends aesthetically with both. It can be really rewarding to explore design ideas and options in order to end up with the conservatory that both fits your family’s needs and expresses your personality.

Are Custome Made Faucets Right For You?

Everything is custom-made now, even faucets and taps

From the early days of indoor plumbing up until about 30 years ago, the kind of faucets and taps you had in your home didn’t matter much. You used whatever came with the house. There were usually two different knobs, one for hot and one for cold, and sometimes even two separate faucets.

The last thing anyone cared about was what “style” they were. But times change. As homes became more custom-built and society grew more image-conscious, a whole new market opened up: designer taps and faucets, made to suit the homeowner’s personal tastes. Now there are literally hundreds of styles, all functioning essentially the same way but adding aesthetic appeal to the kitchen or bathroom.

The bathroom is where homeowners have done the most with designer taps, maybe because guests are more likely to use this room than the kitchen, and maybe to help bring elegance to a room whose uses are less than appealing. Matching bathtub and sink faucets are common. Taps are usually made of steel, with finishes such as chrome, nickel and brass available.

The best place to see the various faucets available is at a home improvement center. These stores usually have numerous styles on display, allowing you to see and touch and determine what will go best with the decor in your home. Styles such as “Victorian” or “modern” help guide you; Victorian taps in a distinctly modern bathroom might look odd.

Most of the major brands offer lifetime guarantees on their taps, assuring you’ll get years of good use out of them. It’s rare that a homeowner changes faucets more than once, unless there’s a complete overhaul of the home’s interior design. For the most part, once you choose a style, it’s part of the house for as long as you are. Choose something you like and let it enhance the beauty of your home.

Country Decorating Ideas - Create Warmth And Charm With Country Style Decorating Ideas

Country decorating ideas can help you create a home that is warm, inviting and the perfect home to live in. Country style decorating ideas can help you capture the spirit of country living during modern times. If you are restoring a country home, try to keep the original woodwork, windows, floors, fixtures and cabinetry unless they are beyond salvaging. For decorating a new or existing home, there are choices you can make that will provide you with the charm and comfort of life in the countryside.

Consider these country decorating ideas and country style decorating ideas:

1. Country Dining Rooms - use a large rectangular table made of pine, oak, walnut or mahogany with wooden chairs or old benches that are similar in style and material. A corner cupboard, plate racks, dresser or sideboard will provide perfect storage and serving area for the dining room as long as they match the style and the materials of the table and chairs.

2. Country Bathroom Decorating - country bathroom floors are made of wood, ceramic tile, linoleum, vinyl or natural cork. Carpeting used in the country bathroom is not appropriate. Wood and brass accessories are perfect materials to use in a country bathroom. Plain white towels instead of patterned or bright modern patterns are better. Wicker or wire baskets keep your sponges, loofas and shampoos handy near the tub or shower besides looking great.

3. Country Kitchen Decorating Ideas - use country decorating ideas in your kitchen. Give your kitchen a calm, elegant country atmosphere with soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting (chandeliers with wrought iron arms), wooden antiques or antique reproduction cabinets, plate racks and stone or wood fireplaces. Kitchen cabinets made of wood, aged surfaces, natural materials, rough finishes and round knobs provide a country style. Cabinets or kitchen furniture made of pine, even painted, can be beautiful key elements in the country kitchen. Country kitchen countertops use ceramic tiles or even hand painted tiles, slate or marble. If you want to use laminate materials, go for plain colors for coverings. Terracotta tiles, brick, stone and wood are very popular materials for country kitchen floors.

4. Kids Rooms - use wicker baskets, wooden chests and wooden bookshelves for storing books, toys and stuffed animals. When using tall bookshelves in your kids rooms, anchor them to the ceiling or walls so they cannot tip over. Bright colored plastic boxes are not good country style decorating ideas.

5. Furniture - furniture with simple lines, perhaps made of lacquered pine wood works great. Give furniture a rustic look by finishing it in a distressed, aged way. For example, brush on a coat of paint, then rub most of the paint off with a sponge or cloth. When dried, apply wood stain sealer unevenly. It will be perfect! Or use two paint colors and sandpaper to create a distressed look for unpainted or previously painted surfaces. Get free country decorating ideas by visiting your local home decorating or paint store for help with materials and techniques. Have fun looking for antiques, reproductions and handmade products when buying furniture for your country home.

6. Sofas or Love Seats - country decorating ideas can transform your love seat or sofa. Add a beautiful loose floral print slipcover for a romantic country look. Include padded stools and ottomen for comfort and as a place to set your drinks or newspaper. Add one or more rocking chairs. Traditional country chairs and sofas have high backs. And if the living room has a bay window, consider building a window seat with several cushions, a perfect place for reading and relaxing. High tripod side tables are appropriate next to the sofa or love seat for country home decor.

7. Antique Cupboards or White Cabinets - use a white cabinet or antique cupboard to show your ceramics, pottery, yellowware bowls, glass jars, or a collection of enamelware from 75 years ago to give your home a beautiful country style. Open shelving not only provides storage, it gives the room a country look, especially when earthware, stoneware and rustic items are displayed.

Country decorating ideas and country style decorating ideas remind us of the way life was lived many years ago. Everyday country life was often difficult, filled with physical demands and long hours. Even so, country life was simpler and closer to nature without the stress of modern city life.

Use country decorating ideas to help recreate the ambience, peacefulness and pleasures of this closeness to nature without having to endure the hardships. Read all you can find about country style decorating ideas. From using old furniture to the colors and fabrics you choose to how your things are arranged, create the country atmosphere in your home that celebrates the lifestyle that used to be.

DOG DITTY DAILY #9

Motivational Moment for Misguided Masters & Mutts

Compiled by Hugo Hotagen, DDD (Duke of Doorknobs & Doghouses), a loyal lapdog-in-training apprenticed to the affable, agnostic and all-round air-headed Court of the Quipping Queen.

A quirky, quizzical and sometimes questionable quotidian quotation, in honor of the “Year of the Dog”, follows herewith:

“I am His Highness’ dog at Kew;/Pray tell me sir, whose dog are you?

Attributed to: Alexander Pope (1688-1744), English poet.

__________

NOTE: This quotation appeared on the collar of a dog given to Frederick, Prince of Wales.

About the Author

Hugo Hotagen, (known affectionately by his peers as ‘Lord Long-In-The-Mouth’), appears to fit in rather well with a consummate collection of quick-witted quidnuncs over in the Court of The Quipping Queen and a curious cosmic place called The Wordorium.

Enhance your home with glow-in-the-dark technology

Many of us might have come across “glow in the dark” effects in the form of a green glow, found on the hands and dials of some clocks and watches. Purpose of this is to allow one to be able to tell the time, in the dark.

What if we could apply this glow in the dark technology to normal products around us. We could make signs, banners, billboards, glow in the dark. We could also make curtains, carpets, clothes, glow in the dark. We could apply this on light-switches, remote controllers, door knobs, key holes, key chains and a list of other daily utilized products and make them glow in the dark.

You might now be wondering as to why anyone would want to do this or how could someone benefit by doing this. Well! for starters, safety is one important reason.

My estate had a power failure recently and the whole area was plunged in total darkness suddenly! Luckily for me, I had glow in the dark technology, used in key areas, throughout my house. I made direction signs using glow in the dark stickers and pasted these all over the house. I also placed signs leading to the emergency kit containing lamps, candles and torchlights. By doing this, my family and I, were clearly guided to the emergency kit and got our house lighted up again.

Now we come to the part on what this product actually is and how to apply it. Glow in the dark comes in powder form. This powder can be mixed with other raw materials like paint, plastics, rubber, glass, fibre and other clear materials. I found some good information on how to use and apply it from http://www.glowinfo.com This site also deals in a wide range of Glow in the Dark Products like - glow paint, glow stickers, glow cloth, glow plastic and more…

Now, anyone can easily apply glow in the dark technology around them, just by using these ready made products available online. Besides safety, glow in the dark can also be used for decoration. http://www.darkniteglow.com has this product called “Night Sky”, which allows you to transform any ordinary ceiling, into a night sky with glowing stars. I have not purchased this but saw the effects when I went over to my friend’s place. He did this in his video room and I was amazed at the result. He also lined the edges of his bar counter and pool with glow stickers. It gives off a soothing effect which is very relaxing.

When I first came across this product, my first thoughts were, is it safe or is it something radioactive. After doing some research at how-stuff-works, I found that it is actually phosphor. All glow-in-the-dark products contain phosphors. A phosphor is a substance that radiates visible light after being energized. Occasionally you will see something glowing but it does not need charging. The most common place is on the hands of expensive watches. In these products, the phosphor is mixed with a radioactive element (like radium), and the radioactive emissions. So if your glow product requires charging, it is safe to use and non-radioactive.

Tips For Using Metal Detectors On The Beach

Metal detectors are often used in treasure hunting and in finding relics. It is a handy apparatus especially for hunters and adventurers. There are many models and forms of metal detectors and they all differ in features, quality, and reliability. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Many people do not know what type of metal detector they should purchase. White Spectrum XLT can be found in local and national dealers all over the world and has endured and surpassed the test of time. It can be easily used and is user-friendly.

Even beginners could use it. The manual is available and is easily understood. This model is used most often at the beach in Jewelry or Beach mode. It can also be used in Relic mode. When it is in relic mode, the depth is enhanced and the results can be amusing. However, using it on the beach in the relic mode is not that favorable. Because of the thick, black sand and stones, it reveals too many false targets so it is recommended that you use the metal detector in Beach mode rather than Relic Mode. Using the product is the best way to learn its features. And later on you can easily read the signals. Another plus point is that it is very easy and convenient to carry.

Another model is the White?s Pro XL 6000. Most people buy it because of its fascinating look. Unlike the White Spectrum which has more buttons to use and to look over, there are less buttons to scroll through when adjusting or changing the settings. However, familiarizing yourself and getting used to it may require a little time. But once you know and become familiar with it, it will be very useful. Compared to the White Spectrum, White Pro XL 6000 has a little more depth and intensity.

It does, however, have its own downsides. Some say that the knobs of the Pro XL are quite loose and when adjusting it, you have to be careful not to hit it with your arms. It is quite sensitive and bumping it may require you to start or reset the adjustments. Some users put a rubber band around the knobs to keep them from moving or becoming loose.

You should buy a metal detector that is light weight. This is important when you are detecting things on a riverbank or body of water. Of course, it is good to know how to choose and adjust the frequencies of the metal detector especially when you are using it on the beach. It is also important that you use it at a strategic place or location. When using it on the beach, the modes should be adjusted so that the depth and intensity will be specified and clear. Lastly, familiarize yourself with the metal detector you are using to obtain the best results.

Coincidentally, heating bills are rising at a time when utility companies across the country are now broadening their payment options for their customers, and this includes allowing

The Origins of Our LCD Screens and High Definiton Plasma TV in Vintage Computer Monitors

It may be amazing to current computer users who are used to small compact LCD monitors. Not only were initial computer monitors large and cumbersome but that the early monitors used by computer enthusiasts were Cathode Ray Monitors that were not color,

Initial vintage monitors were monochrome - one color only not the brilliant color displays that we take for granted today.

Some of these monochrome monitors were green or orange iridescent. Others were similar to a black and white television that is grey scale.

It is taken for granted now by young computer surfers and gamers that television was always “color”, not so.

Initially TV broadcasts were in “black and white “.

Color TV had been developed but the technology but the widespread use did not arise till the early 1970’s and even later in some areas.

The broadcasts were seen as black and white on those sets and color on color sets.
Color TVs could receive programs that were in the black and white mode as well. Sort of the backwards compatibility of the day.

What then would be the difference between the picture qualities of a television set a monitor has vastly greater resolution than standard TV sets.

The TV sets of that time (as opposed to current high end LCD and plasma high definition TVs) were basically 1950’s technology - even the newer color TV sets. .

A monitor’s screen display should be stable and of good quality, since the computer user may sit very close to the monitor and spend many hours reading the display.

If the images are fuzzy (low resolution) or waver constantly, you would have a throbbing headache and wavering eyes in no time.

Monitors have knobs to adjust for clarity. On vintage monochrome monitors these usually include a brightness knob which adjusts the illumination of the entire screen, and a contrast knob which makes the letters lighter or darker in relation to the background screen newer color monitors will have additional adjustments for color.

The question will arise - how did the vintage CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors initially handle the color technology which came later and became the accepted standard.

A typical color monitor screen worked in much the same way as a standard CRT television.

The inside of the picture tube is coated with three different phosphors: red, green and blue.

Phosphors are special chemical compounds that glow with characteristic colors when bombarded a stream of electrons.

The phosphor gets “excited” and thanks to the additive properties of the color wheel the different colored lights resulting get mixed and that all types of combinations of the three primary colors result.

The end result is that virtually any color of the rainbow can be produced.

And as for the color white the eyes play a useful trick. When all three colors are mixed together in equal quantities, the eye sees this as “white light”.

Finally the sharpness of the CRT color monitor or a TV set’s image is determined by three factors: the monitor’s bandwidth, its dot pitch, and the accuracy of its convergence.

Although the bandwidth and dot pitch are important to determine a good monitor, convergence is the real measurement.

Indeed we have come a long way from the initial simple vintage monochrome monitors. What we now take for granted with LCD monitors and indeed our high definition TV sets all originated with simple CRT monochrome monitor technology which was merged with the technology and tricks gleaned from the color TV industry.

We should all be grateful. We owe much to “Uncle Miltie”.

Are You Ready For The Home Inspector?

There was a time not too long ago when buyers rarely requested one. Just five years ago the Chicago metropolitan area had only 200-300 home inspectors, while today the figure is 3,000 and growing. The combination of ever-increasing consumer awareness and soaring real estate prices, has made today’s home buyer now more than ever, proceed with caution before committing to the purchase of their dream home. It is estimated that 60% of all real estate transactions involve a home inspection as part of the offer to purchase agreement. Although some home sellers are now beginning to hire an inspector and fix the property before it goes on the market, this is still rare. It is almost always the buyer that hires the home inspector. The buyer makes a written offer to purchase the home with a clause that the written offer is contingent upon a home inspection (usually within three business days) and that all major repairs recommended by the inspector are corrected (usually by the seller) prior to closing. Many sellers will lower the selling price instead of fixing the home. Sound’s nice and easy right?

Sometimes this is where the problems begin and can be tough to resolve.

This is how it works. The home inspector prepares a written report for their client (buyer) that discloses maintenance related issues and any necessary repairs deemed necessary based on the knowledge and experience of the inspector. Anything from broken door knobs to hazardous conditions that need immediate attention like gas leaks, detached exhaust vents and other potential serious situations. If there are expensive repairs needed, the attorney’s representing the two parties may be able to iron out an agreement where the expensive repair costs are divided equally and the buyer bears responsibility for all minor and maintenance related issues. This is just one of many possible settlement scenarios. It should also be noted that the buyer sometimes just walks away from the deal and looks for another home. As you can imagine, home sellers now are beginning to refuse offers that have an inspection clause in the agreement. This does not mean sellers can do as they wish. By law, home sellers must disclose in writing to the buyer any known property defects that they’re aware of. Failure to disclose known problems almost always comes back to bite them in the future.

Home inspections are here to stay.

Many real estate experts agree that in the very near future all lenders will require a home inspection before lending money on the subject property. This of course is in addition to the long time mandatory home appraisal.

Best advice for home sellers?

Don’t neglect maintenance issues! Gutter missing from a downspout? It may be no big deal now, but it will be in a few years when the foundation cracks from water damage. Tree branches scraping your roof? That may cut the life expectancy of the shingles in half.

Don’t neglect old components! Is the hot water heater 20 years old? Replace it. Have your furnace inspected twice a year. Is it too old? Replace it. The bottom line is you need to be pro-active. It’s your home so take care of it. Then someday when the home inspector knocks on the door you can smile and let him in.

Ford GT 2005 Car Review

When I approach an exotic car that can go 204 MPH with a roof line that is only as high as my belt, I have low ergonomic expectations. I?ll probably get some bruising from the suspension and hopefully be distracted by the acceleration to forget how uncomfortable everything else is. I was only right about the acceleration.

The Ford GT is the remake of the 1966 Le Mans champion car called the GT40. The original GT40 was a great looking car, but this new GT has a spectacular exterior design. I?m normally quick to whine about a benign design concept, or a trunk line or the shape under the front bumper, or at least some little picky thing. But the more I looked around this car, the more admiration I have for this work of art. And the designers & engineers had to factor in stable aerodynamics at 200 MPH that would have flipped the original model on its top.

The 5.4-liter engine fills the entire back half of the car, and the supercharged V-8 produces 550 horsepower. For the performance fans: the GT?s 0-to-60 time is only 3.3 seconds, and it takes only 11.6 seconds to pass a ?-mile. The engine note is pretty plain; no NASCAR guttural tones or Formula-1 scream that I could tell; the glass partition between the interior cab and the engine deaden the sound. (From the inside you can turn your head to see a giant belt turning, to what I presume to be the superchargers).

Under the front hood is plenty of storage room for a sports car; about enough for 6 tennis balls or a pair of flip-flops, but not both at the same time! Once inside the car, you realize that the only storage is in the front trunk. There is no glove box, no side-pocket, no cup holder, but I suppose I could slide a few envelopes under my seat. But this is exactly what I want in a true sports car ? all business at propelling me forward and nothing flying around the cockpit as I take big g-forces in the turns.

The interior was much more comfortable than I expected, and the black and silver knobs and dash have an edgy look to them. It has the usual big red ?Start? button that many expensive cars have made popular (again), and toggle switches like a space shuttle for the rear defroster and hazard lights. The tachometer is the big dial in front of the driver and that irrelevant speedometer is off to the right, nearly next to the passenger. Don?t forget to set the temperature controls before you start moving because they are under your right elbow in the center console and awkward to reach while driving.

When driving the car, the biggest surprise I had is how comfortable it takes the potholes and uneven surfaces. I?ve ridden in sport BMW sedans that don?t ride this smoothly. The GT is easy to launch and shift, with power delivered without a noticeable spike from the superchargers. I didn?t get a chance to throw the car around many corners, but the low profile and wide stance would indicate an adeptness with lateral-speed.

If you are trying to avoid attention, I can?t think of a bigger mistake than being in this car. Everywhere I drove some people were staring and pointing, and at nearly every stop light, someone had a question about the car ? a lot more public attraction than any other unique production car I?ve piloted. But for the GT most of its features are extremes, and I am very pleased that Ford has proven it can compete in the +$150,000 world market.

Cabinet Hardware Speak Volumes About Your Personality

What is cabinet hardware? Are you looking to remodel your kitchen or bathroom cabinets? Do you want a new look in your kitchen? You can change the look in your kitchen without completely remodeling. So if you plan on changing your cabinet hardware, how do you know what to choose? Well, first you need to know about the different types of cabinet hardware and what is available to choose form. You can do this by doing some simple little research on cabinets and hardware.

What Types of Cabinet Hardware?

There are many different types of cabinet hardware. You can get knobs, handles and pulls in many different designs and styles. You can have themed cabinets according to whatever your interests are.

Choosing Cabinet Hardware

When choosing cabinet hardware, cabinet color and design should be the two main things you consider. Cabinet knobs and pulls can bring together and entire room and make it look truly unique. It can be daunting to try to pick just one style out of the thousands of available colors, sizes, and styles of hardware. For most people, narrowing down your decisions to a few different pulls that fit your needs can help them to make the right decision. Then trying out a few of the ones you chose, to see how they fit into your home. Obviously these are not permanent changes being made, and if you decide to change them, it’s as easy as taking out a few screws.

Hardware and your Personality

Hardware for your cabinets can speak volumes about your personality. For instance having a sport themed set can tell people that you enjoy sports and are an athletic person. Some people choose to have all the same knobs throughout their homes, however, other people like to have different themes in the kitchen and bathrooms and anywhere else there may be drawers or cabinets.

Metal Detecting Guide! (valli valli)

Metal Detecting Guide!

A pulsing current is applied to the coil, which then induces a magnetic
field shown in blue. When the magnetic field of the coil moves across
metal, such as the coin in this illustration, the field induces electric
currents (called eddy currents) in the coin. The eddy currents induce
their own magnetic field, shown in red, which generates an opposite
current in the coil, which induces a signal indicating the presence of
metal. There are certain features needed for certain places the device is
going to be used for. If you intend to use it on the beach, the terrain
wont be that rigorous. But you are going to need waterproof protection.

There are many different kinds and styles of metal detectors - gold
detectors, coin and jewel detectors, beach-hunting detectors,
underwater metal detectors, handheld and walk through metal detectors

Metal detectors are electronic devices that are used to find traces of
metal usually from the ground, a person, or cargo. This metal could be
anything from discarded pieces of aluminum to buried treasures. These
devices can penetrate sand, soil, wood and other non-metallic substances.

Metal Detecting Video

Metal detection is something that has been around for more than a
century. The technology used in making the detecting device has various
applications, which has prompted the development of lighter, smaller and
more powerful models. As a result, the number of treasure hunters has
risen regardless of whether is done for fun or for pleasure. There are
websites and books that can teach a newbie about metal detection. If
the individual doesn’t have the time to read the fine print, there are also
volumes of this topic found in video.

Metal detecting videos can’t be found in the local store. These have to
be special ordered. It is best to look in the magazine or on the Internet
to be able to purchase a copy. The content could last from 30 minutes to
an hour showing the basics of using a metal detector.

The beginning will usually talk about the origin of metal detecting.
Though the history may be quite trivial, it will be amazing to know that
this was also used in forensic medicine some time in the 19th century
even if the technology then was primitive at best. For walking speed,
remember the paint rollerr analogy above. As long as you are painting the
entire surface of the ground and not missing any spots, you are not
walking too quickly. However, if you find that your imaginary paint is
missing areas, you need to slow down your pace.

As stated earlier, metal detectors could really be expensive. You can cut
on cost if you cut on features. Try to look for the best bargain by
enumerating the features you are going to need against the one that you
can leave off.

A flower garden seen from the kitchen window would have been a good
place for the lady of the house to bury a cache of money. The man of
the house would have buried a cache of money someplace that could be
seen from the bedroom window.

The basic metal detectors are easy to get used to, with less features and
buttons. Find out more about bounty hunter metal detector today! Any
place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a great
place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts with
having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector should
you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting at
detect-metal.info. Most detectors will perform as promised by the
Manufacturers. However, different brands of detectors will have various
characteristics and features. Some detectors may require different swing
speeds and some may weigh more than others. Yet another feature to
consider (for ease of travelling and packing) is the number of sections that
the detector will separate into.

The large coil can be found in the search coil of the detector while the
small coil is found on the System Control Pack. The coils are connected to
an oscillator which produces pulses of current. The pulse passes through
the coils in order to generate radio waves.

The second part will brief the viewer about the metal detector. Though
these may come in various models, their function is still the same, which is
detecting coins, jewelry and other metallic artifacts that are buried in the
ground. The third part will explain in detail each part of this device. The
person will notice that each section is important and plays a vital role in
distinguishing whether the object could be something of value or this is
just garbage.

The next portion on the video will explain the different technologies used
in the metal detector. Some use a low frequency; others detect through
a pulse indicator and still others with beat frequency oscillation. Various
models use one or a variety of the three which determines how
expensive the device may be. The video will also show and teach the
person how to scan in a certain area. The improper use of this device
could make the user skip over something giving someone else the
opportunity to find it later on.

If one section was not well understood, the individual can just rewind or
go to the menu and play that part again. This will give the person enough
time to absorb the material in the video and put the lessons learned into
practice. As more and more contemporary children seem to have major
family problems compared to years past, it is absolutely critical that both
you and your team thoroughly know mental health basics. Since studies
emphasize that seeing and helping distressed youth are the primary ways
to prevent school shootings, that’s another reason that non-mental
health youth professionals like educators must upgrade their skills right
away. Schools everywhere are using metal detectors to help filter out
violence. The metal detectors can very easily (for this is why they are
used) detect a knife or gun. Police stations and Airports use them as well.
Some users put a rubber band around the knobs to keep them from
moving or becoming loose. You should buy a metal detector that is light
weight. This is important when you are detecting things on a riverbank or
body of water. Most metal detector companies also offer supplementary
services like designing, material sourcing, prototyping, short run
manufacturing, upgrading or re-designing, assembly services and specialty
packaging.

Gutters should be cleaned out, inspected and repaired in the spring and fall to prevent soil erosion which can lead to foundation or basement damage. Consider installing gutter accessories to divert water.

Getting Started In The Furniture Business

If a person is interested in going into business on their own, there are countless types to choose from. Many people like the convenience of working from home. One great home business, provided a person has a separate space from their home, such as a garage, basement or workshop because of the chemicals, is a furniture builder and finisher. Of course the person would have to either take classes to learn this particular trade, unless they already have experience in it. There is not a lot that you need in order to get started, except for of course your wood and related supplies. There is a great deal of equipment that is needed in order for a person to start their own furniture building and finishing business. Of course every business needs the convenient office equipment, like computers, copy machines, fax machines, etc. But when you?ve got a business building and finishing furniture, there is a variety of shop-type equipment and supplies that you will need. You will need various types of saws, which includes different size blades. This will enable you to create different types of designs. You will also need a dependable drill as well as drill bits in order to bore holes into the wood so that you can assemble the furniture or place decorative hardware onto it.

Another piece of equipment that you would need for a successful business in furniture is a sander. You certainly can?t apply stain or finish to a rough piece of wood that hasn?t been sanded. The customer wouldn?t be too happy about this type of quality. The sander would allow you to sand the furniture after building it, which is part of the prepping process. The customer could request to have a piece of furniture distressed, and there are special tools used for this as well. After this step, you would either wipe or spray stain onto the furniture, using a spray gun. There are several types of spray guns, and they are used for the stain application to ensure that it goes on smoothly and evenly. Next, there is what is called a sealer gun, which is a special spray gun that is used to seal and apply top coat to the piece of furniture.

A person with their own business could probably really benefit from an accountant to handle all of their taxes, as well as a person to take care of payroll, should you grow to the point of needing to hire employees.

How To Get More Money For Your House

If you are thinking about selling your house, you should take a serious look at your home through objective eyes. You’re probably used to all the little quirky things that need a bit of fixing up and don’t look quite right, but to a prospective buyer, these things can be a real turn off.

The most important areas to look at are the kitchen, bathrooms and the outside entrance to your home. You want all these rooms to look updated and homey. You want to welcome the prospective buyer into the home and make them feel like the want to live there. And, most importantly, repair anything that obviously needs to be fixed. No one wants to buy a house that needs repair right off the bat!

The first area your prospective buyer will see is the outside entrance so you must make sure your house has curb appeal. The buyers first impression as he walks up to the house should be warm and inviting. You want them to feel like you take good care of the house so no bare spots of dirt or dead plants! Some color is great and you can buy flowers pretty inexpensively. Don’t forget to trim any overgrown bushes and remove anything that is dead. Keep the lawn well manicured. Don’t feel bad about spending money on the landscaping as this could very well result in a higher price for your home!

The kitchen is also a key area. Worn counter tops or linoleum will be a big turn off so invest is some new flooring or counters if you can. Also, it is important to have updated appliances. Those 70’s look avocado and gold pieces will be a huge turn off to the buyer. Investing in some newer appliances will go a long way towards selling your house for top dollar, but if you simply cannot afford it, try changing the color with some appliance spray paint.

Cabinets are another area that can detract from the kitchen, but can also be expensive to replace. If you have those ugly dark wood cabinets that were popular 30 years ago, try sprucing them up with some light colored paint, new knobs and hinges.

Use the same rules in the bathroom. Fix any leaky faucets and make sure the fixtures, toilet and tub are squeaky clean. If your bathroom is wallpapered in an outdated paper, rip it down and paint in a neutral color.

Your entire home should be clean and in good repair. Remove any clutter and worn items. Take a good look at how the furniture is arranged does it make the room look too small? If so you might want to remove some pieces. Just changing the position of some pieces can make the room look more inviting.

Doing a little bit of work and investing in some new things for your house can not only help the sale to happen faster, but it can also put more money in your pocket. Just don’t fix it up too nice or you might not want to move out!

Mixing Bathroom Accessories

Choosing bathroom accessories such as knobs and robe hooks is not easy. You have a selection from Dove, Musa, Antique, Aranjeuz, Austin, Barcelona, Cabin, Belvedere, Cameo, Channel, Cannes, Catalina, Chenille and more to select. City Temple, Contessa, Cosmopolitan, Dominic, Designer, Drop and Elizabeth created a nice line of knobs and robe hooks as well.

When choosing knobs and hooks your best bet is to reduce your options. For instance, do you like gold? Do you like gold combined with chrome? Would your prefer decorative styles? Do like the mirror look? Considering your taste, style etc can help you narrow down your choice.

In addition, you want to consider your bathroom. Do you have a country setting? Do you have a regal bath? Is your bath Victorian Style? Are you purchasing knobs and hooks for a kid bathroom? What colors and patterns are in your bathroom?

If you have regal or master bathroom you may like the gold knobs and hooks. Jas has a nice line of knobs and hooks. Jas made the creative gold robe hooks, which go well with a variety of colors. You might have a wall mirror, glass cub, hooks, shelves, and racks in the background of your bath area. In this instance, I would reconsider the gold, unless you have gold trimmings around your bathroom accessories.

If you have gold trimmings, the gold will look great. If you do not have gold trimmings, you may want to add a few other bathroom items. For instance, you can purchase gold bath bars, gold-trimmed holders made of glass, gold and glass soap dish, bath tissue holders, vanity glass shelves trimmed in gold and so on. Toss in a gold towel ring and you are off to a good start.

How do I choose knobs and hooks for antique bathrooms?
If you have an antique environment, you may like Pacifica’s line of bathroom accessories. Antique shades, tones, etc could benefit from the oil rub bronze hooks. Satin nickel will also go well in antique bathrooms. Toss in a Bronze Oil Rub ring, antique white soap dish and toothbrush holder, and perhaps a vanity glass mirror and there you have it.

The rustic gold are nice items that go well in antique environments. The Antique Bronze Burn shades are nice as well. Toss in a rustic, bronze, or antique vanity glass shelf and your patterns will blend well. In addition, you can add a bath tissue holder; towel ring/bar and you are off to enhance your antique bathroom.

Aranjeuz makes a nice line of products, which you could blend in antique regions. It depends on your style, yet you could blend the gold trim with chrome polish hooks to set off an antique atmosphere. The brush nickel mixed with gold is nice as well.

How do I choose modern patterns and colors?
Dominic collections have a nice selection of hooks. You may like the chrome polished items designed by German crafters. Wind has a nice selection of modern designs as well.

How do I choose bathroom accessories for Victorian baths?
Victorian style baths often benefit from Satin Nickel shades, brass and chrome polish, and so on. Victorian style is designed to bring home legends of the past. Victorian also honors the traditional patterns. Most Victorian bathrooms can benefit from the shades listed, as well as other items that offset porcelain. If you have a Victorian bath, it’s likely you have porcelain tubs and sinks, which you want to match the colors when searching for bathroom accessories.

How to sell your home fast and make thousands of extra dollars

Want to sell your home quickly? Has your home been on the market for too long with no interest? Let me show you how to sell quickly and make thousands of extra dollars at the same time.

If you’re a homeowner, you’ve no doubt heard the term “curb appeal”–that somewhat subjective first impression that your home makes to a visitor seeing it for the first time. If you’re thinking of selling your home this spring or even if you just want to spruce things up so the neighbors will love you again, here are some tips to consider:

Stand back - look at your property: You’ve probably stepped over that cracked walkway a hundred times, and you don’t even notice the faded paint job anymore. But someone approaching your home for the first time certainly will, and it can be the difference between someone coming in for a closer look or just driving on by. So, step back and take a good look at your home through the eyes of prospective buyers. Put yourself in their shoes, and make a written list of those things that might raise some concerns for you if you were thinking of buying the house. If you don’t think you can be objective enough, then ask your real estate agent or even a friend or neighbor to do it for you. And while the front of the house is the primary focal point, don’t overlook the sides and rear of the house as well.

How’s that roof look? A bad roof can indicate a home that has suffered from a general lack of maintenance, and may point a finger at potential structural and even mold problems resulting from leaks. Roofs are expensive to replace, but depending on your market and your desire to reap top dollar from the sale, you may want to take a hard look at the economics of re-roofing. And if you’ve been considering just crediting the cost of new roof to the buyer in escrow, bear in mind that you’ll probably get more potential buyers and a higher sales price if you take care of the roof yourself before even putting the home on the market.

Paint is great - use it: Few things help your home show better than a fresh coat of paint. If you’re handy with a brush and an airless sprayer, you just might want to undertake the project yourself. A long weekend and a few hundred dollars in paint can make a world of difference in how well the home shows and how quickly it sells. If you don’t want to paint the entire house–or if it doesn’t really need it–just painting the trim, exterior doors, garage door, or window shutters can make a big difference as well. I have seen many Gatlinburg cabin for sale that have increased their value by up to 20% using this tip.

Make necessary repairs: They may seem like little things, but making sure that everything is in proper working order can make a huge difference in how people perceive your house and the care you have taken with it as a homeowner. Fix cracked concrete walkways, and reset loose bricks. Make sure exterior knobs and locks all work properly. Replace cracked or splintered trim boards and deck boards. Make sure fences are sturdy, and gates work as they should. Repair broken window screens. Put up some bright new house numbers. And don’t forget to squirt a little oil on those squeaky hinges.

Landscaping goes a long way: You don’t need a complete makeover to make a big difference in how your yard looks, and once again, landscaping and yard maintenance say a lot about how you’ve cared for the house over the years. If you have a lawn, fertilize and water it regularly to green it up, and run an edger along sidewalks and driveway edges. Rake up leaves and pine needles. Repair sprinkler systems. Prune back those wild shrubs, and trim overhanging tree branches. Head down to the local nursery and pick up some bright flowers to create borders and accent areas that will add both color and a feeling of hominess to the yard.

Don’t forget the night view: A home that shows well at night really creates an impression. Replace any burned out light bulbs, and consider adding a timer or two to keep the lights on a little longer into the evening. Consider some low-voltage or solar lights to accent front walkways, and maybe provide up lighting to accent trees and larger shrubbery. Keep a light or two on in the front windows as well, to add to the feeling of coziness and comfort.

Clean up: Finally, spend some quality time with a broom, a pressure washer, and a bucket, and give every part of your home a good thorough cleaning. If you’re not going to paint, wash down the siding to remove dirt and stains and get it looking fresh and clean. Wash driveways, walkways, and patios. If you have a wood deck, consider a complete cleaning to restore the wood to a fresher look. Wash all the windows, inside and out, and wash the screens as well. Polish doorknobs and light fixtures. Stow all of your garden tools and kids’ toys away to remove clutter and potential tripping hazards. And take a trip–or five–to the local landfill and dump all that stuff that’s accumulated in and around the yard

Establishing Your Mix. (liberty hardware)

Establishing Your Mix.

Now that youve spent hours and days and weeks and months recording your musical masterpieces (and youve also read my article Tips for a Great Recording Session), you have arrived at my favorite time in the studio; The Mixdown.

Now that youve spent hours and days and weeks and months recording your musical masterpieces (and youve also read my article Tips for a Great Recording Session), you have arrived at my favorite time in the studio; The Mixdown.

But dont think your job is done yet! The mixdown is just as important as recording. As an artist, you have to approach the mixdown from an artists point of view and stay on the creative side of the fence where its still possible to shape and mold your songs throughout the mixdown process.
Remember the old Yin-Yang principle which states, whenever you turn something up, something else disappears. Furthermore; whenever you turn something down, something else gets louder. This applies to EQ, levels and almost anywhere you have two or more tracks.

The Beginning Of The End

STOP!! Dont even think about starting your mixdown on the same day you finish tracking. Take a day off, have a break and then come back refreshed with a new perspective.

Now back to business…

First of all, lets zero the board. This is simply the action of bringing all the faders to the bottom (-∞) and centering all the pan knobs and effects sends.
I know what youre thinking, youre thinking but our mix sounded good when we were tracking!.
OK, but did the mix actually sound good or were you just accustomed to hearing it that way? Thats why zero-ing the board is important. It flushes your memory and allows you to start from scratch. It might even be better to mix a song that you finished recording a while back.

1.Get Kicked.
This is where I prefer to start. Other people like to start with the vocals and build around them. But Im more rhythm based and prefer to start with the kick drum.
One tricky part of any mix is getting a good gain-stage structure where you dont clip the master faders at the end of your mixing session when all your instrument faders are raised. We must be careful to keep watching the master bus clipping lights to make sure they never get into the red. Here is why the kick is a good place to start.
Play your songs and watch the master bus VU meters. This is probably the only time you will mix with your eyes. As youre watching the master VU meter, slowly raise the kick fader until the master meter reads about -7dB. If you are a four piece band, then you can leave the kick there and move on. But if you have a really dense tune, then you may have to lower the kick to -8dB or so (to leave room for all the other instruments as they come up).
Now you are set to mix. The kick should be the only channel that you set levels by watching. Every other channel mixed into the song will be with your ears relative to the kick.

2.Moving On
From now on, its pretty much a free-for-all. Some people like to move on to the bass next, in order to find the balance for the low-end of the song. Other people like to keep working on the drum kit as a whole before moving to other instruments. I prefer to move onto the drum kit over-head mics.
They say that a great drum kit sound can be captured using only two over-head mics, and a kick mic. And its true. Some of my tunes only use three mics on the final mixed versions, even though we had used up to ten mics for the recording of the kit.
If you placed your over-head mics properly (i.e.: so the snare sounds centered in the stereo image, and not skewed to the left or right speaker) then you will have a better stereo image of the drum kit when the mix is finished. Otherwise you might have to do some fancy panning or EQ to get a balanced image with the drum kit.
You can now bring in the rest of the kit underneath the over heads to fill out the sound. I prefer to leave EQ and effects to the very end of the mix, after all of the instruments are playing. Try to place your toms in the same panning position as the overhead mics recorded them. If your floor tom in the overheads is to the right at 3 oclock then pan your individual floor tom fader to the same position.
And dont forget to check your phase between your mics pointing down and your mics pointing up.

3.Big Bottom
Now I like to add in the bass. Nothing too important here if you have good source audio. Im also a huge side-chaining fan. I LOVE to side-chain the bass with the kick so the low end frequencies wouldnt fight for space in the mix. It just makes things sound tighter. Sometimes you may have to eq the lowest of the lows out of the kick in order to make a little more room for the bass to sit in the mix.

4. Pads and More
Here is where I add the pad type of sounds. These are sounds that usually have longer sustains and hold the chords of the song. Sounds like strings, sustained electric guitar chords, synth pads, and maybe even some rhythm acoustic guitars are great foundation instruments.
I like to lay these instruments on top of the drums and bass tracks we have already mixed. You can get very creative with the panning of these sounds and create a wide stereo field. This will help make your mix interesting by allowing your lead instruments and vocals sit in the center of your stereo image, attracting attention to themselves.

5. The Vox
Lets finally add the vocals. I usually start off with the lead vocal, and then place all the harmony and background vocals underneath the lead. Sometimes, you can end up putting the vocal a little too high in the mix, and a great way to check this is to turn your monitors way down and listen to the mix at an almost inaudible level. This way of listening to your mix will surprise you, but you have to be confident and trust your ears. If something sounds disproportionately loud at this quiet level, then it is too loud. If you must, then you can compress the vocals too, but that really depends on the songs style. Maybe a few fader rides are a better choice then some static compression.

6. The Rest
You can start adding effects and other fancy shmancy things to your tune. Get funky with automating some pan knobs, fade-in some pads etc.. Here is a good time to get creative.
Its also a very good time to actively listen and re-adjust your mix. Is the kick too loud? Should I put some higher frequencies on the bass? Should I compress the backing vocals more? Is the coffee finally ready?
When you feel you have a good mix, burn it to CD and listen to it EVERYWHERE! In the car, in the bath, at home, on the TV set, at your friends place etc., and make a lot of notes. And at the end, if all your notes cancel out, then you are finished!

BLOG POWERED INTERNET DREAMS AND DREAMERS

Do you remember this song ? ?Deep within each heart, there lies a magic spark, that lights the fire of our imagination . . .?

In this first newsletter we want to talk about the ?Power of the Dream? and the power of the internet to make that dream come true.

The internet is quite an amazing site of human creativity and imagination. As well as being full of sites that we might describe as functional to the point of being boring, there are some amazingly talented people out there doing some very clever and imaginative things.

A lot of this talent and imagination centres around Blogging as its structure. There are millions of blogs out there in English alone and they are on almost any topic you can think of. When I first heard of blogs I was a tad sceptical. After all, I didn?t think I?d ever even seen one. This was a couple of years ago, but I found that when I looked deeper, a lot of information is disseminated via blogs. If you haven?t really had a look at any blogs up until now, go to www.technorati.com or www.blogsearchengine.com or http://blogsearch.google.com.

Blogs tend to be a series of posts or comments by the blog owner and sometimes open to visitors to comment as well. (There are pros and cons to having your blog open to visitors comments, you will get lots of activity, which search engines will love, but you might find that most of your activity is advertising for casinos or some such. We experienced a jump in our google position for one of our sites after a lot of advertising was loaded up onto our blog and we then removed it. All that uploading and deleting of info made us look highly active to google!)

You could visit a make up blog, an irritable bowel syndrome blog or a blog on a certain breed of dog. Topic specific, but fairly free flowing.

So, why blogging rather than conventional static web pages?

Partly because Blogging is more free form. It is a very direct personal medium. Blogs are fairly cheap and easyto set up, while websites can be expensive and therefore need to be held more financially accountable.

Also, at the moment search engine?s love blogs, so if someone has a message for the world, if they blog it it will likely get disseminated widely.

It is a web rumour that google (and perhaps the other search engines) are weighted in favour of blogs, as opposed to conventional pages, because they think a lot of clever web users are using blogs, and that therefore what they write will be worth reading.

Search engines also love blogs because they tend to get updated regularly. Google believes that if it is being changed often it is relevant and full of great new info for web surfers.

Because search engines love blogs, blogs are a fantastic advertising tool to attach to your commercial website.

Blogs are also a great way to increase your relevance for your target key words for your website. For example, if I want to rank higher for ?Bible Stories? for our website MyChristianArt, then I will do a blog talking about Bible stories. I can do the same thing for a lot of other key words. The search engine sees that these keywords are on a blog attached to my site, so my site is ranked as more relevant for those keywords.

This is not to say that all you have to do is run a blog attached to your site, stuff it full of your keywords and the search engines will love it and drive streams of traffic to your site. Blogs are not the whole answer, but they are an important tool.

In the future we will talk more about the advertising power of the Blog, but in the spirit of today?s theme, let?s take a look at a blog powered Dream.

The Sydney Morning Herald on July 12th 2006 ran an interesting article about a young blogger from Montreal. His name was Kyle MacDonald and he had a dream. He wanted to swap his way from being the owner of a red paper clip, to being the owner of a house. And he did it. He posted his desire to trade a red paper clip on the website ?Craig?s List? and someone swapped him a pen for it.

At the same time MacDonald, who wants to be a writer, wrote about what was happening on his blog.

His swaps started small, door knobs and the like, and then got bigger ? snow mobile, trips to the rockies, a year?s rent in Phoenix.

But as the interest in his project escalated and people followed along on his blog, it became apparent to a number of people that his blog was getting a serious amount of exposure.

To the point that Corbin Bernsen of LA law contacted MacDonald and said that he would give a speaking role in a movie in exchange for the year?s rent in Phoenix.

MacDonald of course realised that Bernsen did not need or really want the year?s rent, what he was after was the publicity. MacDonald took the effort to find something that Bernsen actually might want (a snow dome of Kiss ? Bernsen collects snow domes) and swapped that for the speaking part.

MacDonald maintained his integrity, Bernsen got his advertising and then the town of Kipling offered MacDonald a house in exchange for the speaking part.

Why? Again ? advertising. The town is like a lot of little towns all over the world that are struggling to attract people and money. They wanted the publicity of being part of Kyle MacDonald?s project.

They have said they will hold competition similar to ?Idol? to find someone for the speaking part.

There are a couple of things that really interest me about this guy?s experience.

First ? that people were willing to swap in the early stages, before the fame really got going. One man?s trash is another?s treasure.

Second ? that once he was well known that people were no longer swapping just to get the goods and get rid of theirs, they wanted to be part of the experience. It was entertaining and there was a bit of secondary fame involved.

Third ? that once it became really famous it was an enormously leveraged tool. There are a lot of people who need fame as part of their jobs, either for their own personal brand (like Corbin Bernsen,) or fame and prestige for an organisation in which they have a stake (the town of Kipling).

What does this mean ? basically the better known our blogs are, the more useful a tool they are. And also ? amazing things are possible.

Teach Your Child Through Playing Using Toys That Teach

Everyone knows that toddlers love to play with toys, and are compelled by curiosity to reach for everything that comes their way. Well, it’s time to use that curiousness to babies’ advantage and give them toys that will teach them.

There are several different ways to get educational toys for toddlers. The first, and most obvious, place to look would be your local toy stores. You’ll almost certainly come across an educational toy between the aisles of Barbie and toy soldiers. In fact, you might be overwhelmed by the selection! But if you can’t find anything suitable at your local toy store, then you can turn to the Internet. Go on-line and search for “educational toys for toddlers” and see what pops up. The results would keep your kids busy until they’ve got kids of their own! After you’ve investigated some of these options, you might want to consider the products below, which have proven useful for many parents.

The chatterbox telephone is a toy telephone that speaks to kids who play with it in several different languages. You can use it to teach your toddler your native language, or even perhaps help them to pick up a bit of a foreign tongue. Children love to pretend to talk on the telephone so this toy is always a big hit.

Spin and play centers are engrossing toys that stick to any surface with their suction cup bottoms and provide logical problems for your toddler to solve by spinning dials, pulling levers, and turning knobs. Needless to say, it will keep them occupied for hours, and build their ability to think abstractly.

The curiosity cube is a cube that provides a wide range of activities tide to different senses. It will help toddlers focus their attention, and increase their knowledge in various areas, including understanding of words and recognition of different colors, shapes, and numbers.

This is a veritable classic of children’s toys, present in waiting rooms around the world. The primary colored wooden blocks glide along metal rails, directed by toddlers’ hands and gravity. This will teach toddlers that most basic premise, what goes up must come down.

These are just a few of the toys available that will help educate your toddler, and the field continues to grow daily. By keeping your eyes attuned when you are in toyshops, or doing an occasional web search for educational toys, you will stay on top of recent arrivals. And it is worth it to do so, because everything that helps your toddler increase their mental ability will help ensure that they succeed later in life.

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. Find more about this as well as educational toys at http://www.educationaltoysandgadgets.com.

Compiled by Hugo Hotagen, DDD (Duke of Doorknobs & Doghouses), a loyal lapdog-in-training apprented to the affable, agnostic and all-round air-headed Court of the Quipping Queen.

A quirky, quizzical and sometimes questionable quotidian quotation, in honor of the “Year of the Dog”, follows herewith:

Cyprus Apartments

Cyprus apartments are a great way to spend a carefree holiday on this lovely Island paradise. The most obvious advantage of holidays in Cyprus apartments is the freedom to please yourself. If you just hate having to get up in the morning to que for your breakfast or rush back in the evening for dinner Cyprus apartment holidays were made for you. Get in when you like and go out when it suits you for the most relaxing holiday experence you could ever want. It’s all very well paying an arm and a leg to be fussed over in some zillion star luxury hotel with knobs on but you can’t beat the freedom of a holiday in Cyprus apartments.

Cyprus apartments are modern and often very luxurious with every conceivable home from home comfort plus a few more besides. Air conditioning for instance is a must at least in the bedrooms and most properties will have it installed as standard. I know you don’t go on holiday to wash and cook but if you have kids it may be a necessity so most apartments have washing machines in their fully fitted kitchens. Cyprus apartments offer a real home from home holiday experience for families and couples alike without the hassle of set meal times.

You will find an abundance of Cyprus apartments to rent all over the Island in the coastal resorts as well as the picturesque villages where you can sample some authentic Cypriot village life. The cyprus lifestyle is mainly an outdoor one due to the countries fantastic climate (over 320 days of sunshine) and that’s why most Cyprus apartments are built with such large balconies or sun terraces. Most of the eating in Cyprus is done outdoors along with the cooking, which makes barbecues the ideal alfresco cuisine. Many Cyprus apartments do in fact have built in barbecues on the sun terrace and the great news is that the weather won’t let you down either.

Nearly all the modern property complexes are built around a pool area with plenty of room for sun bathing and chilling out. You can relax with a nice cool beer and still keep an eye on the kids enjoying themselves in the water. There is always a great community atmosphere around these complexes and you are sure to meet some real friendly folks who will have made Cyprus their permanent reretirement home. In fact many of the Cyprus apartments that are rented out belong to private individuals. They will have purchased these properties for themselves and rent them to help with the day to day costs of ownership or even as payment towards a mortgage. Please bear in mind that even though you may have rented through a large company the Cyprus apartments are often someone’s home.

There is no doubt that Cyprus apartments will give you a holiday to remember and have you coming back to this beautiful Island year after year (just like we do) to soak up that glorious Mediterranean climate. The people are friendly, the weather is perfect and they even drive on the left. With so many people buying their own properties to rent out there has never been a better time to consider Cyprus apartments for your holiday. Enjoy Cyprus!

Arts and Crafts Revival

Copyright 2006 Melissa Galt

The terms Arts and Crafts and Mission Style are often used synonymously today. They refer to a style of home design and furnishings emphasizing natural materials, especially wood, and showcasing a pronounced geometry in the design. Their tremendous revival in popularity stems largely from their association with hand-crafted elements (though many knock-offs are manufactured by machine), a rarity in this technologically advanced age. The pieces offer an heirloom quality and a patina that deepens with age. Arts and Crafts furnishings and interiors are also typically very durable and classic with a timeless appeal. They suit today?s desire to simplify and get back to basics. Arts and Crafts interiors are an ideal marriage of function and aesthetic; spaces are designed to work for those living there. To create your own Arts and Crafts interior, there are several elements to consider, both in materials and design.

The materials of an Arts and Crafts interior, while not limited to nature, emphasize wood, stone, glass (made from sand), ceramic tiles (made from minerals/earth), and textiles (using wool, cotton, or linen fibers, and, of course, leather). Much of the visual pattern comes from the grain of the wood selected. Traditionally oak was used, but currently natural cherry is frequently enjoyed. The oak tends to have a golden brown gleam, while the cherry is redder. Both darken naturally with age, which is to be expected.

Flooring, all architectural trim/molding, doors, stair rails and stiles, and exposed structural supports are all typically wood, oak being most prevalent. Waxed or oil finishes prevail. Joints are pegged, or hand-crafted metal hardware is used. Door knobs, cabinet pulls and the like are again hand-crafted wrought iron or bronze in black, umber, or verdigris. Many are square or rectangular shaped and are hand hammered. For a lighter look, some homeowners today are opting for a soft brushed pewter or nickel finish instead. Once you have the guidelines, you can bend them to suit. If an alternative to a wood floor is desired, tile or slate would be appropriate substitutes. The tile should be large and laid in a linear pattern, not on the diagonal.

To balance and complement the visual depth of the wood, walls are often treated with a textured paint or plastered. (The old bungalows have original plaster.) A good bet is the river rock finish that Ralph Lauren paint provides. Paint schemes bear an influence from nature with goldenrod yellows, burnt sienna browns, cimmaron and Indian reds, sage and moss greens, and a neutral palette of earthy tans, toasts, and beiges. The overall feeling has a harmony, continuity, with all elements working together, none upstaging the other. It is about creating an organic home, one that works within its environment and makes the most of its surroundings both outside and inside.

Fireplaces have wood or stone mantels, with stone, ceramic or occasionally brick surrounds. The wood is again oak with a golden stain, usually waxed or rubbed, not polyurethaned. Satin or matte finishes rule. Stone is field stone– stacked dry or with mortar, it presents a terrific textural visual. River rock may be used instead and the round smooth stones provide a counterpoint to the rectilinear geometry otherwise present. Ceramic tiles will typically have a motif from nature, perhaps a leaf or acorn, or be an iridescent finish. Today glass tiles are also used to great advantage. Brick, when employed, is smooth faced and laid in clean horizontal bands. Again, one of the clear features of an Arts and Crafts interior is the linear quality. The feeling that the house is part of a bigger view, part of the horizon, is all an effort to be from and of the earth.

Historically, many of the Arts and Crafts and Mission homes sported art glass windows, or at least many panes. This enabled windows to be left uncovered and still appear decorative. Today, art glass windows can be cost prohibitive except in select areas, so if treatment is desired for either privacy, light, or heat control, simpler is better. This translates to either plain Roman shades, silhouettes, wood blinds, or panels on either tabs or rings on a decorative rod (wood or wrought iron) with finials. If tiebacks are desired consider sisal tassels, simple and bold, or a band of the same fabric as the drapery. No trim or other decorative element is required. Fabric patterns may herald nature, such as a leaf print, or be based in geometry. There is a wide range on the market today including historical prints by William Morris and designs by Frank Lloyd Wright. The same may also be found in wall covering, though use it sparingly as it is often busy and distracting. Arts and Crafts and Mission Style today both represent a desire for a wholesome, hearty lifestyle, a return to yesterday?s values.

Furnishings in the Arts and Crafts home are again wood, occasionally with a wrought iron or ceramic tile accent. Glass is rarely used. Tables, being functional as well as good looking, often have at least a drawer and a shelf for storage. Shapes are squares, rectangles and octagons. Today more rounds are available. Again, the geometry created by edges is most apparent. Sofas and chairs are often wood backed with exposed wood arms and cushions that can be readily cleaned or changed out depending on the season. Flexibility and adaptability are prime features. Mission style goes a step further and often offers sofas or chairs with a deep wood shelf surrounding them acting as the arm and a table (Frank Lloyd Wright design), which gives the illusion of a built-in piece. Leather is frequently used or fabrics in natural fibers such as cotton, linen, or wool. Rich colors and geometric or patterns drawn from nature abound. The most significant interest comes from the combination of elements, again, no one piece dominating. Busy patterns are used sparingly, increasing longevity and flexibility of the furnishings. Resources for furnishings include Stickley, American Impressions by Ethan Allen, and Cotswald Furnishings, a superior resource for hand-crafted furnishings and more in Atlanta.

Lighting in an Arts and Crafts or Mission home is critical, especially with all the dark woods and depth of color schemes popular. While ceiling lights, including recessed, can give a good general light, it is far more effective and pleasing to adopt a wealth of luminaries. Torchieres (floor lamps that give uplight, and are best placed in corners) can provide valuable general lighting, while table lamps and floor lamps provide invitation and welcome. Accent lighting can be done with mantel lamps, sconces, and dresser lamps. The two most common types of lamps are the mica and metal designs (the body of the lamp being hammered bronze or copper, the shade a sheet of mica) and the art glass lamps with wood or art glass bases and shades of glass in geometric patterns and a squared coolie shape. Other lighting options include a wealth of reproduction lighting through several lighting sources such as Arroyo Craftsmen and Yamagiwa. (They are available through designers and have an outstanding line of Frank Lloyd Wright designs.)

Accents, accessories, and artwork should be kept to a minimum to allow for a fuller appreciation of the architecture of the home and materials of nature showcased. This is a good chance to provide balance to the predominance of wood with elements in glass, ceramics, and metal. Both bowls and vessels are readily available in all materials mentioned here. Iridescent ware in both ceramics and glass provides an airy complement to the weight and depth of the wood.

Enhance The Look Of Your Bathroom With Trendy Shower Curtain Rods

As well as looking nice, shower curtains require durable and good-looking shower curtain rods that will hang them. Installing a shower curtain rod is quite easy. You do not need to make holes in your bathroom walls or tiles. Just use the fashionable but strong hooks and place the shower curtain rods on them. Your bathroom is ready to become beautiful with shower curtains.

?

Bathroom accessories like shower curtain rods have significance of their own. These are no more the less noticed accessories of your bathroom but have become one of the most important items for your shower area in the bathroom. Gone are the days when people just used to hang shower curtains on some metals wood rods. Lifestyles have changed now and people are quite aware of the design and styles of shower curtain rods.

?

The shower curtain rods can have a great impact on how you feel while taking shower in bathroom. While dull shower curtain rods can dampen the look of bathroom trendy rods make bathrooms look really cool. However, you have to make sure the color and design you are choosing for your shower curtain rods match your bathroom walls and tiles used in bathroom floor.

?

The selection of rod will also depend on the type of curtain you want to hang. If you are planning to hang dark colored curtains, then go for metallic shower curtain rods with curved knobs. If you are planning to cover your shower area from four sides, use rectangular shower curtain rods. Use curved shower curtain rods that will fit built-in tub units and various other shower units. You can also use crescent shower curtain rods that will fit your tub opening. There is also another type of shower curtain rods, which are called shower enlarger rod. You can use this rod when you require enlarging the shower area in your bath.

?

Ideally wooden rods should be avoided as a shower curtain rods since these rods go through wears and tears every time you open and draw the curtain.

?

Shower curtains come in different size and shape, as far as the rod width is concerned. You have to select one that will fit your bathroom structure, design and shower area. However, since shower curtains are usually lightweight curtains, light metal rods are perfect to hang the curtains. As far as the length of the rod is concerned, it will depend on your bathroom height. The shower curtain rods need to be durable and long lasting because these rods have to withstand daily use.

?

However, you must not forget that your shower curtain rods too need to be maintained like the curtain rods you use in your rooms.

Preparing Your Home For Sale by Installing Exterior Vinyl Shutters

A common mistake people make is to assume that their house is "ready for sale" just because it is a livable, functional place that is not in need of repair. This mistake can not only make your home take longer to sell, but can also mean you will be accepting thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars less for the home than the amount you can get with a few smartly done improvements.

Choosing An Appropriate Digital Camera

If you’ve resisted buying a digital camera up until now then you’re really missing out. Digicams have come a long way since the early days and many models rival conventional cameras with ease.

Take a few minutes to decide what you’ll be using it for. Simple family snaps or something a little more creative? Visiting a high tech camera store can be daunting task with many dozens of cameras on display. Which do you go for? Some are as small as a bank card, others are huge with all manner of knobs and buttons. Maybe you can see yourself smugly showing off your new micro-thin digital camera but before you make your decision, it’s important to zone in on the main reason you’re buying the machine in the first place.

Are you looking for an ultra compact model which fits nicely in your pocket? Or are you expecting to be snapping more professional pics for your work? Do you think too many options may confuse you or are you happy with modern digital menus etc? Think about whether you’d like a camera with some manual functions too. The last thing you want to do is return home with a camera that is not exactly matched to your situation or skill level.

If you’re new to the digital camera revolution, try to brush up on the terminology used. Acquaint yourself with the various camera specifications. The Google search engine is a great place to do some research. The salesmen will of course try to make you believe that your dinky, micro-thin, ultra expensive digicam will transform you into a David Bailey clone. Don’t believe the hype.

You’ll see the term ‘Mega Pixel’ everywhere. This is simply the maximum resolution that the camera will produce. The higher this value is, the larger your photos will go before they become blurred. If you think that you’ll only be sending pics back and fore on the web then a 2 megapixel model will do just fine. Don’t be confused with optical zoom and digital zoom. They are two very different things. Digital zoom is not a true zoom. All it does is process the pic with a loss of image quality usually resulting. If you like your zoom function, always go for an optical version.

How much can you spend? While digital cameras are dropping in price significantly these days, a decent machine will still set you back a pretty penny. When deciding on your budget, be sure to consider the dimensions, the features, its resolution (megapixels) and the manufacturer.

Every photographer will have their favourite brand. If you fear change then stick to what you know. Go for a brand that you have got on well with in the past. If you’re a little more adventurous then you can have much more fun in that digicam store.

Some other things to consider include the memory card. This is the equivalent of the film in a regular camera. Most digicams use SmartMedia Flash cards and you can pick up 128 meg cards on the Internet pretty cheap these days. Furthermore, what type of batteries does the camera take? You’ll find that the majority of digital cameras take AA cells, so you may want to consider rechargeable options.

Lastly, always but always try the digital camera in the store before you part with your cash. Many people get all excited, not really checking the machine out as much as they could. Then when they return home they find it’s not really the tool they thought it was. Get trigger happy in the shop. The sales assistants won’t mind and if they do then go somewhere else. Note the ergonomics - does it fit nicely in your hand? Can you get to all the essential buttons easily? Take your time to check out all the features and ask lots of questions. Follow this guide and you’ll be the proud owner of a digital camera that will see you right for a long time.

Holiday Gifts For The Elderly

Seniors have special needs. Shucks! We all do.
If you are planning to get a present for an elderly person this holiday, here are a few suggestions.

RELEVANT
What can the senior use? What can the senior use daily? Is there an item that would make his or her life easier? Here are some examples.

Electric Razor- If your loved one is wheelchair bound and male, an electric razor would be a relevant gift and one that is sure to be appreciated. And don’t get one of those that you have to plug in! Duh! Get one of the good quality ones that runs on batteries. That way, he won’t have to waste time rolling around to find an electrical outlet.

CD Player-I’ve heard it so often from those who have spent most of their lives in the last century,” I have a tape player, but I don’t have a CD player.” Get busy. Most music is available on CD today. Your loved one may be missing out on favorite music on demand. Besides, you can add one of those Spoken Word Books particularly if your loved one liked to read and now good sight is a problem.

Senior Shoes
Get ‘em the ones with the stick-together tabs. That way one doesn’t have to bend down to tie shoelaces which, in all probability, are about eight inches too long anyway!

HELPFUL

Manicure and Pedicure-You got your own clippers, so you don’t think about that much. However, trimming toe nails and fingernails can be a real hassle or impossible due to infirmities. Maybe you could line up a Manicurist that makes house calls. Set up a schedule-every two week or every month.

Haircut and Lady’s Hair

Same thing. There are folks that will come to the residence and give your loved one a haircut or hairstyle, shampoo, etc. It takes a little research and it would be appreciated.

Doorknobs- Didn’t think of this one, did you? A wonderful gift would be “latch type” door openers(replacing the door knob). As the aging process kicks in, people often loose strength in the arms and hand. This would really help in such a situation. If you’re handy, you could replace them yourself. If you’re educated, you can pay someone else to do it!

You do the shopping-This is a cheap one. You might like it. You, yes you, go every several weeks and do the shopping for the senior. I like to think of it as a gift that keeps on giving!

A kind word, sit and listen, clean the john, launder the john bib, wash the dishes, dust, make the coffee-I think you get the picture.

As the Holiday nears, don’t forget those precious human beings that have meant so much to you in your life. Love them!

Why We Don’t Write Our Books

In the ten years that Ive taught people how to get on with their books, Ive noticed a phenomenon that Ill call Authors Block. Would-be writers can, indeed, sit down and work when pressed to it. The problem is that theyre not so sure they want the pressure of being an author. But they do want to. But they dont. And so on.

Ah, the agony of getting on with your book.

Well, Im here to diffuse that situation with a list of what I think are the key reasons we dont immediately set down to write. Perhaps this will help the next time you find yourself polishing doorknobs instead of sitting down to write.

 We lie to ourselves about why we cant write the book. We think our stalling is about lack of time, or too much pressure at work, or not enough solitude in the evening. But guess what? Chances are a deeper, darker reason may be at play, like Im not supposed to be bigger than Mom or What if this thing really takes off?

 We fear the impact our book could have. Sometimes when I coach writers in my self-help authors crash course, Ill ask them whats impeding progress. And after some probing, it will come out that theyre afraid of the big exposure a book can have if it takes off. Im here to assure you that should that happen, (and chances are your book will not unleash wild mobs of millions) you will be able to handle it. How do I know? On that deep level where psyche meets karma, you wont create a reader more than youre ready to receive.

 We think our book doesnt matter, so why bother? One writer I know put this so succinctly: Ive tried getting up at 5AM to write, and staying up late, and leaving my home, but none of it works. I have this tired feeling that none of its going to amount to a hill of beans. In fact, writing and publication can be an entirely self-determined activity these days. If the publishing pundits dont go for your book, theres always self-publishing and e-books on your website. In other words, your book does matter, and you really have no excuse. (Acid test: if the book keeps on patiently urging you to sit down and write it for months and even years, chances are youd better do it.)

 We think we dont know how to write a book. Guess what? Neither does any other first time writer. And that may be a wonderful thing because you dont com in with a carload of expectations and demands from your process. Youre just open, like well, a nice blank book. All you really need is your intuition, and the will to write your book as honestly as you can.

 We have no support. You need someone in your corner, cheering you on, to get through the long and somewhat tiring process of birthing a book. Thats why my Self-Help Authors Crash Course is not an e-book (believe me, it would be easier!) but a 12-week teleclass series. Because these writers need a place to show up and be accountable for their progress. They need someone to keep saying, Yes, you really can do this. Thats how tricky and difficult our minds are when it comes to big challenges.

 Were afraid well run out of material. There isnt a writer out there who hasnt had this fear. And Im here to say that if you just stay loose and open, and willing to receive the ideas, they will show up. All you have to do is commit really sit down, and begin to bring that book into being and the work will magically appear. Sometimes it wont flow that easily, and sometimes it will scare you with its speed and power. But it will, indeed, show up.

 We think Who am I to write a book? And yet, you are the perfect person to write your book, because youre the one chosen to receive this material. (You dont have to be spiritually inclined to believe this.) I personally believe that books are given to us when were ready to receive them and when we do, our lives are changed by that process.

 We fear uncomfortable moments. Ah, but thats the most exciting thing about writing your book. You will be given challenges and lessons that just seem untenable along the way. And if youre committed enough, youll rise above them and so become stronger in the process. This is especially true for self-help books: we write what we need to learn.

Im here to urge you to just get on with your book. Not only do you deserve it so do we.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Conservative Tests and Treatments

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a devastating injury that affects more than 8 million people in the United States and continues to increase each and every year.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of many repetitive strain injuries (RSI’s) that are everywhere; homes, offices, assembly lines, grocery stores, book clubs, construction sites, dental offices, everywhere! Because carpal tunnel syndrome is so commonplace, and its effects so devastating, it is important to be knowledgeable of how it occurs, what its symptoms are, the testing methods used and what treatment options are available, as the prevention of any injury, especially carpal tunnel, begins with education.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a disorder affecting the median nerve, which supplies function to the thumb, index, middle and one half of the ring finger. Usually the symptoms are most prevalent in the thumb, index and middle fingers (Sometimes one-half of the ring finger) and include numbness, tingling, paresthesia (pins and needles), pain and tightness in the front of the hand, wrist and forearm. These symptoms do not have to occur simultaneously, and may only affect one finger one day and then three fingers a few days later.

If a doctor provides a carpal tunnel diagnoses and the symptoms are in the ring and little fingers, it is NOT carpal tunnel syndrome! The ulnar nerve, not the median nerve, supplies function to the ring and little finger. Repetitive strain disorders affecting these two fingers are usually either Guyon’s syndrome, entrapment of the ulnar nerve in the guyon’s canal at the wrist junction, or cubital tunnel syndrome, entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow junction. This is a common mistake made by many, many physicians and is completely inexcusable as they often recommend surgery for the patient, causing the patient to undergo an unnecessary procedure, and what makes it worse, for the wrong disorder!

If symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome do arise, doctors will recommend that a nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test or an Electromoyogram (EMG) be performed to see if carpal tunnel syndrome truly exists. These tests are often painful to the individual being tested, very expensive, and often give false positives and false negatives. This is why it is recommended that manual carpal tunnel tests be performed in order to obtain a more accurate (and much cheaper) diagnosis. Manual carpal tunnel tests take no longer than 10 minutes, have a high accuracy rate, are painless and are very cheap in comparison to the NCV and EMG tests.

The recommended manual carpal tunnel tests consist of the following:

? Phalen’s Test: The wrist is flexed for 30 to 60 seconds in order to compress the median nerve and duplicate/increase the symptoms.

? Reverse Phalen’s Test: The wrist is extended for 30 to 60 seconds in order to stretch the median nerve and duplicate/increase the symptoms. Stretching the median nerve if it is already impinged will duplicate/increase the symptoms if a patient has carpal tunnel syndrome.

? Tinnel Sign: Tapping directly over the median nerve at the wrist junction will cause carpal tunnel symptoms to exhibit themselves.

? Compression Test: Direct pressure is applied over the location of the median nerve for 30-60 seconds to see if carpal tunnel symptoms are exhibited.

If a positive diagnosis comes back, most doctors will push for surgery, a procedure that has a terrible success rate and is to only be performed as a last resort once all other conservative treatment methods have been utilized. Conservative therapy is the key to successfully recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome and obtaining not only short-term but long-term relief as well.

The following is a list of conservative treatments that should be utilized in order to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome from developing, but also rehabilitating carpal tunnel syndrome after it is already present.

? Ergonomics: Utilize proper ergonomic tools and equipment when working.

? Breaks: Take short breaks every 30 minutes when working in order to help reduce excessive strain on the hands.

? Stretches: Stretch the muscles that ‘close’ the hands as these are the muscles that are exercised all day long in activities such as typing, writing, gripping a steering wheel, using a computer mouse, carrying groceries and everything else that is done day in and day out. When a muscle is involved in exercise, it becomes shorter, therefore it needs to be stretched and lengthened both during and after the exercises are completed. (End of day)

? Exercises: Exercise and strengthen the muscles that are used to ‘open’ the hands, as these muscles do not receive much direct stimuli / exercise. (i.e. People do not turn doorknobs, hold things, type, use a computer mouse or lift things with the backs of their hands.)

The information provided above reveals how carpal tunnel syndrome occurs, what its symptoms are, the testing methods most commonly used and the best conservative treatment options that are used to thwart its existence.

It is very important for individuals to become well acquainted with the proper information and tools in order to maintain and increase their level of health and productivity. It is also important for people to speak to their doctors regarding their health concerns, and if someone is involved in an occupation that is considered high-risk for carpal tunnel, they should discuss this with their physician, but is even more critical that people become self educated as no one can take care of you better than “YOU”!

Barbecue Techniques

When was the last time you had a good barbecue? Here are some things to remember to help you come up with the perfect barbecue.

The choice of wood that you use can have some bearing on how your barbecue comes out as these impart different flavours to the meat. (Yes, unfortunately, your neighbors’ complaint that their food has a taste of wood in it actually does have some basis.) In addition, some types of wood burn faster than others. Many suggest that the best way to barbecue is to use a combination of wood and charcoal to optimize smoke flavour and consistent burning. (Let’s see what your neighbors can say about that one.)

As far as charcoal is concerned, buying a commercial bag of processed charcoal briquettes is fine, although lump charcoal may be better. The main difference between lump charcoal and brisquette charcoal is that the first has not been ground and shaped. Lump charcoal is considered a purer form of charcoal and is obviously preferred by purists over processed charcoal.

Ideally, you should use a chimney starter because this ensures a consistent heat level for the coal. Or, you could also use an electric iron to heat the coals. Others simply soak the charcoal in lighter fluid and light them, a technique which is quick and easy, although this can impart unnatural chemical flavours to the meat. Better to use denatured alcohol to avoid the aftertaste problem.

After 15-25 minutes, the coals are covered in ash. For indirect cooking, spread the coals around the grill’s perimeter and place the meat in the grill’s center. For direct cooking, pile the coals together in the center right underneath the meat.

Gas grills are ideal because they are easy to light and the heat they generate is easy to control, using those gas valves on the burners (the one with the knobs). However, purists still prefer cooking with charcoal because they claim gas grills lack the flavour that comes from cooking with wood and charcoal. Gas grills are also more expensive, but they are also cleaner since they do not produce ashes or air pollution.

Updating Your Tired Kitchen Cabinets

By now, having lived with a set of cabinets in your kitchen, you will know what you wish you had?more space for coffee mugs, a way to show off your stored china, greater depth for serving platters and large dishes, a special design for spices, etc?Designers will say all sorts of things about revamping your kitchen cabinets from making them the same size to whether or not to install glass. You should update your kitchen cabinets to suit your needs; make them as functional for your use as possible.

True?you want your cabinets to look stylish, but this can be a secondary concern. When thinking about cabinets for your kitchen, consider how you use your kitchen. Do you wish you have a glass cabinet next to the refrigerator? Do you need a cabinet installed with a lift for your heavy mixer? Do you need a more shelves within the cabinet? Perhaps you could do with a floor to ceiling cabinet to serve as a pantry? Whatever your needs, consider these before anything else?you can then design to suit them.

Once you know where you want your cabinets as well as how deep, how many shelves, which ones require special features like lifts of lazy Susans, you can consider materials and style. Wood cabinets are used in kitchens for their warmth and durability. Of course, there are many wood choices to consider. If you want painted cabinets, it will not be necessary to purchase mahogany, for instance, but you will want wood with as few knots as possible to make for an easy paint job; it need not be an expensive choice?just a durable one. Plywood is a more affordable option and a good choice if you plan to paint or decorate in some other way.

Consulting a carpenter may be necessary if you plan to install cabinet doors with glass panels. Many designers preach against glass because it shows untidy cabinets. However, if you are organized and want to show off your lovely dishes or china, glass paneled doors are a beautiful option. Additionally, glass doors will allow you to show off the interior of your cabinet walls?you may want to wall paper them or employ a decorative design. Simply painting the insides a light color such as ivory will provide a light and airy style that unglassed cabinets cannot provide.

Speaking of light, you may want to install lighting features within some special cabinets?the one that shows off wedding china for example or your floral teacup collection. Be sure to fit your cabinets with other useful features like hooks for hanging mugs and handled cups, for example.

If you cannot install brand new cabinetry, there is nothing wrong with updating what you already have. Again, paint gives cabinets a fresh start. Whether a single color or a decorative combination of colors and techniques, painted cabinets are a happy alternative to wood grain. You may even want to consider a decoupage arrangement of fruit, flowers, vintage adds, etc?Additionally, resurfacing existing cabinetry is like a facelift giving your cabinets a fresh look. Many different veneer styles are available at local home improvement centers.

Finally, give your choice of cabinet hardware careful thought. There is a vast array of choices available?anything from porcelain knobs to pewter handles, wood grips to glass pulls. These, too, can help revamp the look of your cabinetry and make for an excellent update. Be sure you like the feel of them, because you?ll be using them on a daily basis, and just like the cabinets, they need to function for you and your family.

For more cabinetry ideas, check online or at local home centers to see what styles might work for you.

Protocol for the Introduction of a New Pet to Other Household Pets

When you first bring home a new pet, expect a period of transition and adjustment for the other pets in the household. You may find that some pets hide from the new addition, whereas others might try to push it around. Sometimes the original pets will start behaviors designed to get your attention (including barking, pawing, stealing items, or pushing the addition out of the way and jumping on you).

All of these can be normal and are not worrisome if they change within a week or two. If the animals in the household do not revert to normal behavior within a short time or if they become aggressive, a problem exists that will not go away on its own. The sooner you seek help from a qualified specialist, the better.

Before introducing any new pet, make sure it is healthy, has up-to-date vaccinations, and that test results for fecal parasites are negative. It is particularly important that all new cats are check for their viral titer (feline immunodeficiency virus FIV, feline leukemia virus FeLV) status. Cats with positive results should not be brought into a negative household.

You can make the transition easier for new pets by using gradual introductions. The new pet should be kept separate from the other pets whenever they are not closely supervised. This advice may be extreme, but it is designed to ensure that no injuries occur and that the social situation of the original pets is not suddenly fragmented. The original pet(s) should have access to the same areas of the house as previously. If the dog was crated, the crate can still be used. If access was restricted to the first floor, this pattern should continue. The new pet should be placed in a neutral area (den, finished basement, brightly lit bathroom) with toys, a blanket, water, a litter box if the new pet is a cat, and anything else it might need. It is important that the new pet not be placed in an area that is considered highly desirable by the other pets. Areas of high value usually include places where the people spend a lot of time with the pets (bedrooms) or where the pets choose to stay when they are alone (around food dishes or on window sills that are good perch sites). If your dog is always crated, you can accustom the dog quickly to a new dog by crating the new dog across the room where it can be seen by the original one. As the dogs become more accustomed to each other, their crates can be moved gradually closer together until they are side by side.

Be sure that the area in which you are confining the new pet is pet-proof. This means toilet seats should be down, electric cords should be tied up and put away, sockets should be protected with child guards, and any valuable or fragile items should be moved. New pets will explore, and that exploration should not endanger them. If the new pet is a very young puppy or kitten, you may wish to crate it for its protection. Crates do not afford total protection from willful and determined claws and teeth of an uncrated animal, but they do greatly minimize the risk of damage.

Whenever any animal is isolated for any reason it is critical that the animal receive a lot of social attention whenever possible. This is especially true for new pets. When you come home greet the original pets (make all the dogs sit first) and let them out, if this is your normal routine. Do not rush - when people are stressed and rush they may either facilitate undesirable reactions between the pets or not be as attentive to cues about impending problems as they otherwise would. Introduce the new pet gradually. First, spend some time alone with the new pet. Then bring the new pet outside on a leash or harness and let the other pets explore him or her. If you anticipate problems, the other animals also can be on leashes or harnesses. If you have too many animals to adequately monitor under these circumstances, the new pet can be placed in a crate or cage in the center of a room and the other pets can explore the caged pet.

The best time to perform gradual introductions is when the animals are calm. Start by petting the original pets and telling them that it is “okay” only if it is truly okay; do not reward hissing, growling, and biting. When you tell a pet it is “okay” when it is upset, you are not calming the animal - you are rewarding inappropriate behavior. If the animals in the household are calm and either ignore each other or act friendly despite the new addition, you can feed them within sight of the new pet. This distance should be close enough that they can easily see and watch each other, but not so close that they become upset. Once you find this distance you can move their food dishes closer together by an inch a day until they are side by side. If you ever have an aggressive encounter, back off from that distance and return to the last distance where neither pet reacted. Leave the dishes there for a few days and then gradually start to move them again. Feeding and petting the animals in each other’s presence teaches them that good things happen when they are together and calm. For this to be successful, neither side can react violently. If a pet does react this way, banish that animal to a neutral zone immediately and try again when it is calm. If it again reacts violently, banish the pet for the rest of the day or evening and try later in the day or during the next morning.

Some aggressive and undesirable interactions are not violent but are still not conducive to the development of a good relationship between the pets. You can learn to watch for subtle behaviors that can signal potential problems, should the recipient of the behaviors not be able to change the course of the interaction. In dogs these behaviors include piloerection (hair lifting on scruff, neck, or back), staring, snarling, and pouncing are also threats but are less intimidating to many animals than the display just described. If you believe that the new pet is losing the contest or is terrified, or is becoming so aggressive that it might injure the original pet, separate the animals. Do not put your hands or other body parts between the animals. This is the single most common way in which people are injured by pets. Use cardboard, brooms, loud noises (whistles, foghorns), or water pistols to separate the animals. If you can identify the aggressor, banish that animal to neutral turf. If you cannot identify one aggressor, banish every animal to different pieces of neutral turf.

If the new pet is sitting in close proximity to the other pets and everything seems to be going well, tell all the animals that they are good and give them all small food treats and petting, if they like to be petted. This works best if you have two people so one can hold the new pet while the other deals with the other animals. If you are working with two people, switch roles so that the new pet does not associate its rewards with only one person. This can still be accomplished with one person by using leashes, harnesses, and crates. Leashes can be tied to furniture or doorknobs that are at a distance that will allow pets to sniff each other and react, but not so close as to permit them to lunge at and injure one another. Never leave a tied pet unsupervised even for a minute; it could strangle and die.

The entire time that you are doing this exercise - and it could take hours or weeks - make sure that each pet has 5 to 10 minutes alone with you each day when all you do is pay attention to that pet. This attention could be grooming, playing with a toy, or just petting and massage. Make sure that the pet is happy and relaxed at these times. If you know in advance that you are getting a new pet, you may want to establish these periods of individual attention in advance of the new arrival. If these periods follow a regular schedule, the pets will learn to anticipate them. It may decrease their anxiety about the new addition because they can rely on them.

Once you are able to get the pets to react to each other in a positive manner or not to react at all when restrained, remove the restraints. Be vigilant and keep a water pistol, foghorn, air canister, or whistle with you to interrupt any dangerous situations. If the animals are all behaving well, remember to reward them with praise and treats.

Once you have done the above, you are ready to let the animals out of your sight. Put a bell on the new animal by sewing a bell to its collar so that you always know where it is. This will allow you to spy on any potentially problematic interactions and to interrupt them before they create problems. During this period when you are beginning to provide the pets with free access, remember to provide additional water dishes, litterboxes, beds, and toys so that you minimize competition and the potential for aggressive interaction.

The keys to success are patience and observation. It is critical that the animals are not inadvertently encourage to become hostile or nervous in each other’s presence by well-meant but misplaced reassurance for inappropriate behaviors. Expect that the social system may shift. The dog that you always thought of as the “boss dog” may not only be relegated to a lower position, but may actually prefer that. Let the animals set their own pace. In many cases the pets never become close companions but are reasonably content leading separate lives under the same roof. This is far more preferable to frank aggression. Do not push the animals too hard or push for relationships they clearly do not want; this could backfire and you could undo most of the good behavior that you had achieved.

If the pets have lived in the same household but have begum to have some problems with interaction, the previously mentioned protocol can also help them. The pet that is the victim of the aggression should be fed, walked, and given attention before the aggressor. This reinforces its right to some valued status. If confinement of one pet becomes necessary, confine the aggressor to a neutral or lower quality room. Do not confine the aggressor where it would rather spend time; this only convinces the animal that the contest is meritorious. When you reintroduce the pets, do so gradually as described previously. Move from introductions under controlled circumstances to ones in which the animals are being monitored from a distance. Let their behaviors tell you when you are ready to progress. Put a bell on the collar of the aggressor. At the first sign of any aggressive behavior, and definitely within 30 to 60 seconds of the onset of the behavioral progression, startle the aggressor with a foghorn, air canister, or water pistol. This means that you should not wait to startle the cat until is has pounced on the kitten, but that you startle it as soon as it stares at the kitten. Timing is everything. The startle must be sufficient that the behavior is aborted but not so profound that the animal becomes terrified. At that time, reassure the victim, and after all animals have been calmed, engage them both in behaviors that are incompatible with aggression (i.e., feeding and petting). If the aggression persists, banish the aggressor until it is calm, then try again. If the aggression continues, banish the aggressor until later in the day or the next morning.

If the aggression - either between new pets or pets already in the household - continues, you can try a behavior modification technique called “flooding.” Done incorrectly this can be very traumatic and damaging. Consider consulting a behavioral specialist to see if this is necessary. It can be a wonderful last resort. In flooding, one animal is kept confined or otherwise restrained while in the presence of the other animal. It is kept in that restrained or confined situation until the level of the inappropriate reaction diminishes by at least 50%. Obviously you could not keep an animal on a leash for days without respite, but an aggressive animal can be crated for an extended period with food, water, toys, a blanket, and a litterbox (if necessary) while the other animal is either locked in a room with it or placed in a similar cage facing the aggressor.

If one animal is loose, you should realize that it could injure the caged animal or be injured by sticking its paws through the crate. If the animals become more aggressive and upset, flooding does not work and is counterproductive and should be stopped. Usually the effect is a positive one, and the crated aggressor realizes that the other animal also has a right to share the house. This technique is a last resort and should not be attempted with qualified advice.

Finally, pharmacological intervention may succeed where other therapies have failed. There are many newer anxiolytics available which, when prescribed by qualified individuals and used correctly, may be helpful adjuvants to behavioral and environmental modification. In very extreme cases of interanimal aggression in which all other therapies, including pharmacological, have failed, the best, kindest, and safest solution may be to place one of the animals in a new home.

The above is general veterinary information. Do not begin any course of treatment without consulting your regular veterinarian. All animals should be examined at least once every 12 months.

Dress Up Your Bathroom with a New Vanity

Adding a new bathroom vanity in your home is a great way to update the look and feel of your bathroom. A bathroom vanity can include several things; it can consist of bath furniture, bathroom faucets, basins and mirrors. There are several popular designs that you can choose for your new bathroom vanity.

Ideally, a bathroom vanity should reflect the overall style of your bathroom. When you are choosing a new bathroom vanity, keep the colors, style and size of your bathroom in mind. A large cabinet style bathroom vanity will overwhelm a small powder room, and a metal and glass bathroom vanity will look out of place in a Victorian style home. Also, keep in mind your storage needs when you pick a bathroom vanity. If you need to have room to store toiletries in the bathroom vanity, choosing a cabinet style will help increase your storage space. If storage space is not an issue, look for a pedestal style bathroom vanity.

A custom stone bathroom vanity will bring a sense of class and elegance to your bathroom. How Home Staging Can Help Sell Your Home

Home Staging should be done when you sell your home. Staging a home can bring you a much higher selling price and help you get offers on your home faster. A home staging professional can be hired to tour your home and direct you to make the changes that will increase your homes marketability. Make sure the stager you hire is accredited.

Staging a home is not redecorating it. Redecorating a home focuses on the seller and their personality. Staging focuses on the buyer. It provides the current home owner with the knowledge to rearrange the furnishings, pictures, accessories, etc. in the best possible manner to enhance the rooms function, appearance and balance.

The seller of a home has a strong emotional attachment and often times lacks the objectivity to know what’s best to enhance their homes looks.

Real Estate agents will often hire a stager as part of the selling package because they may be uncomfortable disclosing to the seller that their home needs work and avoid upsetting them.

The main purpose of the staging professional is to help the buyer see themselves and their belongings fit into the home they are viewing. They do this by rearranging the home to appeal to a broad base of purchasers. Stagers can be expensive, so if you want to go it alone please follow the tips below.

The first and most important consideration to prepare your home for sale is to get rid of clutter. There should be NO clutter anywhere in your home. Go through each room and remove any clutter you see. Organize toys in decorative boxes that are hidden away in a storage room (perhaps a room for storage in the basement). You can always take them out again when you don’t have any booked showings. Bookcases should be neat and attractive interspersed with a few ornaments. Closets should be cleaned out so that only clothes are visible. Remove storage at top and bottom of closets. Place clothes out of season in storage. In fact, place any clutter you have found in storage as well. You have to move anyway and you will have to pack less for later when you do move!

The foyer provides the buyer with the first impression. It should be clean, uncluttered, bright and inviting. If any rooms are dull brighten them up with higher wattage bulbs in lamps.

Remove personal photos from all rooms if possible and replace with prints or ornaments. You want the buyer to focus on your home, not your personal life. This can be distracting.

A fresh coat of paint is mandatory. Paint your home in a neutral colour (white or beige is best). You can ad a splash of colour with colored accessories, pillows, throw rugs, candles, etc.

Bathrooms should be sparkling! Counters should be clear with no personal items visible. Tub tile grout should be clean and shower curtains and glass shower doors should be free of mildew. Hang fluffy, colorful towels on the towel rods.

Kitchens must be spotless. Remove all notes, magnets, etc. off the front of the fridge. Keep counter space clean and clear of all items. Clean out under sinks and organize the pantry. Paint outdated cupboards with a neutral colour and put new modern knobs on doors for a fresh look. Dishes on the floor for pet food should be eliminated during a showing.

Furnishings should be simple and minimal. Leave space between pieces and remove nick knacks. Your most attractive piece of furniture should be placed on the wall you see when you enter a room if possible. Tuck away Cd’s, videos, etc. Hang pictures at eye level. Group accessories in odd numbers (one, three or five).Fireplace mantles should be depersonalized by removing pictures. A flower arrangement, mantle clock or piece of art would be appropriate here.

Garages, front and back yards should be cleaned as well. Plant flowers or shrubs in the yard for a welcoming effect. Prune any shrubs you may already have. Don’t leave bikes or toys around the yard. Clean the pool if you have one. The lawn should be cut and watered to give the home a well cared for look. A coat of paint on the outside of the house may also be in order.

If you can afford a stager it is well worth the money. If not, just make sure you clean and get rid of clutter! A spring cleaning will definitely pay off. This can not be stressed enough! A coat of paint will do wonders. Have lights on in every room (even during the day) and soft music playing before a showing. Spray a nice gentle room spray around the house to freshen it up. Be careful it is gentle or the buyer will think you are covering up something. All the best! Good Luck!

Tips for Metal Detecting

A pulsing current is applied to the coil, which then induces a magnetic
field shown in blue. When the magnetic field of the coil moves across
metal, such as the coin in this illustration, the field induces electric
currents (called eddy currents) in the coin. The eddy currents induce
their own magnetic field, shown in red, which generates an opposite
current in the coil, which induces a signal indicating the presence of
metal. As you can probably tell metal detectors are very useful not only to
find that cherished earring but for our everyday safety and well being.
This is a great invention that will be here for years to come.

The metal detectors in airports, office buildings and prisons for example
help ensure that no one is bringing a weapon onto the property.
Consumer oriented metal detectors provide entertainment to people and
give chance in discovering hidden treasures. Metal detectors work on the
principal of electromagnetism and their effects on conductive metals. The
high-powered coil of metal, called the transmitter, uses the battery power
to generate a penetrating magnetic field. As the electromagnetic field
enters the ground, anything metallic will become charged with
magnetism.

Tips for Metal Detecting

Buying a metal detector is just the first step in a persons’ quest to look
for old coins and jewelry. Before going on that expedition, here are a few
tips worth knowing that will help make the search successful.

1. People who don’t know how to use a metal detector should learn from
those who know how to use it. This will make it easier for the user to
know when there is something worth digging or just ignoring and
continue on with the search.

2. Before going out, the metal detector should be checked to make sure
it is functioning properly. The best way would be to hide a coin in the
garage and have the individual successfully find it; this will increase the
chances of finding other artifacts during the treasure hunt.

3. Another thing that has to be checked is the weather. Tests have
shown that looking for objects when it is snowing or raining outside is
useless because these interfere with the instruments on the metal
detector. This means the person will have to wait until the conditions
outside improve or reschedule the search when it is sunny.

Youve got to buy a metal detector that could withstand normal wear and
tear longer than its competitors. The longer the metal detector can serve
you, the better your return on investment will be. You know all the shops
full of junk that you always pass by everyday ? Many times, people rent
booths in the store to get rid of items that have truly been in attics from
god knows when. Also, think about all the old relic hunters that pass
away.

Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a
great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts
with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector
should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting
at detect-metal.info.

A good way to view the purchase is to decide how much money you are
comfortable spending. It is our view that you measure this purchase
against other purchases you have made. The large coil can be found in
the search coil of the detector while the small coil is found on the System
Control Pack. The coils are connected to an oscillator which produces
pulses of current. The pulse passes through the coils in order to generate
radio waves.

Mention the words metal detector and you’ll get completely different
reactions from different people. For instance, some people think of
combing a beach in search of coins or buried treasure.

4. Proper clothing is important during a treasure hunt. The proper outfit
can keep the individual warm and/or cool and free from insect bites.

5. Most treasure hunts take hours before anything is found. It would be a
good idea to take a tent for the person to rest in and some water along
because dehydration often causes those in the group to call off the
search.

6. Metal detectors run on batteries. Since these will wear out in a few
hours, it would be a good idea to carry spares so the person can continue
looking for treasure.

7. The treasure hunter should research the designated area before going
in. This will save the individual time and energy, which can be put to
better use looking in the right place.

One of the things that the person should determine is if the area where
the search will be conducted requires a permit. Some places require
documentation and it is advisable to get it beforehand so there won’t be
any problems when something has been found. Treasure hunting can be
fun. By following these steps, the individual will have a great time
searching for an artifact and making some money from it.

Find the best gold metal detector today and start treasure hunting! A
recent study proves that hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate
as x-rays in finding coins and other metallic objects swallowed by children.
It is responsible for receiving frequencies that bounce back from the
object that the coil detects. This type of detector is best for identifying
different types of metals.

It does, however, have its own downsides. Some say that the knobs of
the Pro XL are quite loose and when adjusting it, you have to be careful
not to hit it with your arms. It is quite sensitive and bumping it may
require you to start or reset the adjustments. Some users put a rubber
band around the knobs to keep them from moving or becoming loose.
Prices of used metal detectors vary from $275 to $700 for all-purpose
metal detectors. Underwater metal detectors can cost around $500.

Replacing a Stock Radio in a Ford Taurus 2002 SEL

So my friend and I are somewhat into car audio/visual (it’s a lot of fun) and decided to change out my stock Ford radio for an aftermarket one.

We didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into until we got out the old deck. The ‘ol junker (well not really a junker, since it’s an EATC temperature control module coupled with a CD player) was one big circuit board. This thing looked so out-of-date that man could have went to the moon with it (produced in 1974).

We got the deck out, bought an aftermarket dash kit from the local car audio dealer, and connected the new deck. THAT part was easy - but wiring the EATC back up (electronic automatic temperature control) was worse then sticking yourself in the eye with a hot poker.

Here’s a tip to anyone who wants to replace their stock car radios - NEVER cut the wiring harnesses. That being said, finding another wiring harness for the beast that actually works has been almost impossible. None of the wiring diagrams off any website were of merit - and Ford has none themselves that could be of help to us.

On top of that, the aftermarket dash kit we bought didn’t have any knobs - they expected us to supply ones from the last heating system - and nothing to plug the knobs into. We could order the knobs - $12 each - order the switches - etc. The wiring harness was $80, the switches were around $100 for all three…so the total cost for fixing this heating system would be getting close to $500 when you incorporate the cost of the aftermarket dash kit as well.

I don’t think I’ll ever replace the stock radio in a Ford again. At least if I do, it would have to be a model that Ford RECOGNIZES and actually has help regarding the model. Buying replacement parts at Canadian Tire just dosen’t cut it - they never work or fit - and when a Ford dealership can barely help you, you really wonder who can.

Long story short - with winter fast approaching we fused two wires together to turn the heat on for the winter. Simple solution. Likely when summer rolls around, we’ll fuse a couple together to turn on the AC.

Only thing that bothers me is I can’t turn the heat up or down. But it’s on - so scrue it.

Please check out our website, selling audio/visual at Canadian wholesale prices at http://www.euroenclosures.com

Are Your Curtains Boring ?

Tired of your curtains or drapes? Are you looking for some fast, easy changes to update and add some flair to your window treatments?

Here’s some ideas to add embellishments to your window treatments, adding more of your personality and flair to your home.

Add More Window Treatments

The first is to add additional window coverings. For instance, if you have long drapes, like tab topped curtains, add a swag or valence.

A swag can be anchored in the upper corners of your window with decorative knobs or posts. It will hang and drape down the sides of your curtains and scoop across the front.

For an accent swag, choose fabrics to complement your drapes. If your drapes are solid, choose a print fabric. If your drapes are a dark print, choose a lighter accent color within the print.

Valences go at the top of your curtains, and will hide the top of your curtains. Valences can also be in an accent fabric, similar to swags.

Change the Look of Your Window Treatments

The second way to enhance your window treatments is to change the look of your curtains.

One easy change is to alter the hem and make a scalloped edge. There are two ways to do this.

The first way is to make a template of a scalloped edge. Tape it to the curtain bottom to be sure the proportion is correct. Then, undo the current seam for the hem. Re-cut the bottom to the scallop, and re-stitch the hem to the scallop edge. Viola - a new look for your curtains.

The second way to add a scalloped edge is to add gathers along the bottom. First, measure the bottom edge. Now, divide that sum by 4, 5, or 6, depending on which goes into your edge more evenly. For instance, if the hem line is 60″, 6 will go into it 10 times. This will give you 10 gathers, 6″ apart. Or, for 5″ scallops, you will have 11. For 4″ scallops, you will have 12.

Now, starting at one edge, measure in 4″, or 5″, or 6″, depending on how big you want the scallops. Mark with a pin. Continue, dividing the bottom into even sections.

To stitch the scallops, start at the first mark. Stitch perpendicular to the hem line. You stitches will cover the same length as your scallop - 4, 5, or 6 inches. Once you have stitched that distance, gently pull the thread to gather the fabric. Once it is evenly gathered, knot the thread and repeat with all your marks.

Add Embellishments

The final change you can make to your window treatments is to add embellishments. Let’s start with ribbon.

Here’s a really easy change to make - add ribbon accents. You can add a wide border of ribbon to the hem, or if you have tab top curtains, add the ribbon to the tabs. You can even add ribbon tie-backs to the window frame or walls.

For a more detailed change, add beadwork accents. You can add a beaded ribbon fringe to the bottom, sew beads randomly on the fabric, or add beads to the tab top curtains. If you have a valence, consider adding beads to the top or bottom of the valence.

And finally - add some buttons. You can sew button on the bottom edge or randomly on the fabric. If you have tabbed tops, sew a button at the bottom of the tabs on the top of the curtain.

There are many ways to enhance your window treatments. Be creative - and change those boring curtains!

Bathroom sink

The bathroom sink is a necessary area of the bathroom. It is where the individual will do much of his daily personal care. Yet, for many people, the bathroom sink is not the most attractive place to do so. Many will have a vanity that is unclean from years of use, unattractive since it has been there for many years and it may also have broken elements to it. By simply fixing up the bathroom sink, the homeowner can completely transform a bathroom into a livable area again.

There are many ways to do this. The easiest would be to replace the entire vanity at once. This would include the faucet that dispenses the water and its knobs, the sink basin that is where the water is held, and the vanity or the unit that houses the sink. These elements are generally sold separately but can often be found as one too. To replace these, it will take a little skill to pull them out of the walls and off the plumbing. This should be done carefully as replacing plumbing that is broken needlessly can be costly.

Once removed, the individual should carefully look at the floorboard that is under the vanity unit. If this area has not been updated, it may need to be. If it shows any signs of water damage, it is necessary to replace it. Usually, this is not an overly difficult job. Plumbing should be checked as well.

Once this is done, the bathroom sink should be chosen. The sink and its unit should match the surrounding bathroom appliances and d?cor (or it can be the thing that sets the rest of the design off!) Insuring that the proper fitting is there is also key. One popular thing to do is to add to the bathroom a pedestal style bathroom sink. These are unlike vanities as they feature just a sink on a tall pedestal, without any storage. This storage may be made up in some other area of in the bathroom.

Because of its importance in the bathroom, the sink should be carefully chosen to meet the needs of those that live here. It is necessary for an individual to insure that it is properly hooked up. A single drip of water can cause the sink to rot the floorboards below it. Also, look for a stylish faucet that you enjoy. The faucet alone can set the style for the entire bathroom.

How Cool are You? A Review of Maybelline’s Cool Effects Eyecolor

So you say you’re feeling a little funky. You wouldn’t mind a little glitz and glamour, but nothing in your makeup kit is quite up to the challenge.

For less than four dollars a tube in most stores — a good buy for eyeshadow — Maybelline’s Cool Effects might be just what the doctor ordered. Available in six different shades, Cool Effects is glimmery, shimmery, and oh-so-cool.

As a self-confessed makeup junkie, and raccoon-like in my adoration of all things shiny, I snatched up Cool Effects in a variety of colors as soon as they hit the market.

Gel-like in consistency, the shadow is remarkably cool, a definite perk on a humid, hot August morn. Of course, coolness is not really a reason that I buy eyeshadow. More important, by far, is how it looks, and Cool Effects has a great look.

Used sparsely (and by sparsely, I mean a pinhead drop of the gel), Cool Effects is little more than a veil of color. Done this way, the look is romantic and light — perfect for a summer event, though perhaps a bit sparkly for the office.

Add a little more color, and what you get is pure drama. “Cool Beans” is just right for a big night out, and what could be more perfect than “Cool as a Cucumber” for a holiday party? For those of you uninitiated to Cool Effects, “Cool Beans” is a deep bronze, and “Cool as a Cucumber” is a terrific green.

If you reach for a color like “Cool Cat”, you might even try it at the office. “Cool Cat” — a pale, shimmery copper — is probably the only color I’d grab for everyday use.

But ease of use is where Cool Effects falls short. The gel is difficult to blend, and it’s all too easy to come away with an uneven, blotchy effect. Blending is tedious, and if, like me, you favor a more dramatic look, beware. With the heavier application of colors comes another dilemma. If you don’t keep your eyes closed while until it dries completely, Cool Effects creases badly.

Oh, and be sure to have a sink handy. For best results, you’ll need to apply it with your fingertips. I’ve tried with cotton swabs and makeup sponges, but they just don’t do the same job. Unfortunately, on a few occasions I’ve had to go back and wipe shimmery fingerprints from doorknobs or faucets.

If you wake up feeling wild and crazy, or if you’re just a cool cat at heart, Cool Effects is definitely worth a try. So be daring. Experiment. Go ahead and mix the colors — I won’t tell. Just don’t be too quick to toss out your old favorites. Cool Effects isn’t for everybody, and it certainly isn’t for everyday.

The walls have multiple chambers and the PVC used to make the walls of the sunroom is reinforced with metals to provide more strength to the structure. This feature also makes the conservatories more durable. You can derive greater ventilation by placing the turn and tilt windows. In times of unruly weather conditions. these windows can be tilted in such an angle that they provide the necessary ventilation with allowing the adverse weather to affect indoor atmosphere. They can also be opened to 90? angle. giving you unrestricted view of outside environment.

Conservatory Design and Style

The conservatories can be placed according to a number of designs and styles. Some of the common styles and designs include Victorian conservatory. Georgian conservatory. Edwardian conservatory. Mediterranean conservatory and Pavilion conservatory. The Victorian models sometimes have aluminum exterior and interior finish. They are provided with interlocked window and door sashes with thermally broken panels. You can select a number of systems for your doors and windows from fixed to dual. removable screens to sliding ones. child secured handles to double locking. In place of aluminum. you can also have wood interiors. They can have aluminum exteriors with laminated wooden beams and thermally broken panels. The windows can have various attachments including double security lock. awnings. grills. and casement windows. You can place French doors or even single swing and sliding doors. You can even have the Victorian conservatories clad with vinyl. They have low maintenance cost and the construction is energy efficient. They are available with the French swing doors or the sliding doors with glazed roof panels. The Double Victorian style is a hybrid variation with Victorian arcs and Edwardian columns.

The Edwardian conservatories are usually built with a corner facet of 45?. They have a typical vaulted ceiling that is often made up of stained glass. They usually run parallel to the house and are best suited for conventional houses. The Georgian conservatory provides you with spacious rooms made of glass that are economical and are energy efficient. They are provided with insulated roofing and thermally broken panels with interlocked window and door sashes. They have quad doors or swinging French doors with removable screens and have child proof door knobs with double locking system.

Extending The Room With Conservatories

You rooms can be extended to form the conservatory patio rooms. porches. full glass rooms and the three or four season sunrooms. The patios allow the fresh air to enter and restrict insects and unwanted intruder from entering inside. But most of the time. using this room is done only in summer or when the chill is not there in the air. You can build the sunroom on an existing structure or just convert a room into a sunroom depending on your necessity. Some of the conservatory sunrooms make use of the heating and cooling system to the house to regulate the room temperature of the glass enclosed area. If this facility is not provided. you can easily install the system in the conservatory. The conservatories facing the North require fewer blinds as they are the coldest. On the contrary. the South facing ones are really warm and require constant ventilation in the form of open windows. vents on roofs and tinted roof. The West facing conservatories gets the benefit of the evening light of the sun while the East facing one gets the morning sun and is best suited as a breakfast room. The conservatories sure add charm to family relationships by bringing all the family members together in the morning and in the evening. to share the outdoor environment and enjoy the beauty of surrounding landscape. If well planned. they become the ideal place to relax and indulge in your favorite pastime.

Easy Ways to Increase the Security of Your Home

While home security devices may be the most obvious way in which to protect your home from intruders, there are other improvements you can make and practices you can employ in order to keep criminals away.

First of all, make sure your doors are secure. Any loose doorknobs, hinges, or doorframes may be an invitation for a robbery. Secure these fixtures or purchase new ones. If necessary, purchase a new door ? preferably steel, with windows that cannot be broken in order to unlock the door from the inside. A door with windows, however, can still contain a deadbolt that locks from the interior with a key (instead of a turn-dial), and still be secure.

A storm or screen door may do little to prevent a break-in. You may want to invest in a wrought-iron or metal scrollwork door. While someone who really wants in still might find a way to get past the metal door, they will be deterred by the potential time it would take to do so.

Window locks should be in working order. It may be desirable to install bars on lower-level windows. In addition, windows should have the proper interior coverings ? blinds or curtains ? so that potential burglars are unable to see what is inside the home. Burglars are less likely to break into a home if they don?t know what valuables are contained within.

It?s a tried-and-true practice, but leave a light or two on while you?re gone. If it looks like someone is home, most potential intruders will stay away. In addition, a ?Beware of Dog? sign will deter many criminals ? even if you don?t own a dog. The possibility of being bitten by an angry beast does not appeal to even those who would try to steal your valuables.

Keep money, jewelry, and other expensive items well-hidden or under lock-and-key in a safe. In the event of a break-in, you will suffer fewer damages than if your valuables were in plain site. Especially valuable items should be taken to a safety deposit box at a bank.

If you are worried about home security, there are many things you can do to make you and your home more secure. Using multiple thief-deterrent practices can increase safety and thwart break-ins before they start.

House Sitters

Even if you have an alarm system, house sitters are invaluable. If you leave your home to to on vacation, your best defense is having actual people in your home. The majority of burglaries in the United States happen during the day while people are at work. Criminals will take the easiest route. If people are in their targeted home, they will move on to a house that appears empty. The problem with traditional house sitting services is that they simply make one or two trips to your home a day to collect mail, open curtains, water plants, and throw off criminals. That still leaves about 23 hours in the day that your home is vulnerable to intrusion or fires.

The best house sitting option is to have people living in your home. If you have house sitter stay at your home full-time throughout the length of your vacation, you will worry less about burglaries, fires, and other problems such as coming back to a flooded home because of a broken hot water heater.

Having a house sitter also cuts down on preparation time and expenses before your vacation. You won?t have to have your mail stopped (all a criminal has to do is watch your postal carrier skip your house to assume you?re on vacation), buy and set light-timers, or even board the dog.

Don?t have a friend or family member who can stay at your home? There are services available that match up people and live-in house sitters. It?s as though someone is renting your house while you?re on vacation, only they generally don?t pay you rent. They will pay utilities, mow the lawn, take care of your mail, pets, and home while you?re away. They will notify you of any problems. The services help you screen candidates and find the perfect person, couple, or family willing to take care of your home.

Give That Door The Right Knob

As the saying goes ?Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are?. This also holds true by looking at our things and the stuff that we are using daily. In decorating a new home or renovating an existing one, one cannot deny the excitement of choosing or remodeling furniture especially a cabinet, a drawer or a door. For some it is a lot like shopping, finding the right combination and accents for the accessories to match the main theme of the pad.

The main accessories for a cabinet, drawer or door are the knobs. Presently, knobs come in different forms, functions and sizes to match every imaginable furniture design. But the main purpose of the knob is its function. Before laying an eye on that intricate designed knob in your specialty hardware store, you must first identify the function of the furniture. Look into the functions of your furniture first and asses if the knobs you had in mind can sustain through the future wear and tear. Here are some types of knobs that can help you in your quest:

The conventional knobs:

? Brass knobs. These types of knobs are typically used for Victorian inspired furniture and doors. They are good for light to medium load usage.

? Aluminum knobs. These are a good accent for those chrome / steel themed drawers and cabinets. This material is good for the kitchen or the bathroom since aluminum does not rust.

? Plastic knobs. These are typically brightly colored knobs that come with hundreds of designs to choose from, may it be animal shaped or in alphabet letters. These types of knobs are practically applicable to all furniture in the house since plastic will not rust and can easily be wiped with a piece of damp cloth.

? Wooden knobs. These are knobs that are best used in the office, bedroom or study room. Avoid using this on areas of the house that is constantly wet or damp such as the bathroom or the kitchen.

? Crystal or Glass knobs. This is a new member in the family of knobs. Recently the prices of blown molded glass has substantially dropped due to modernization in the craft of glass making, hence making way to very affordable glass knobs. These types of knobs present a delicate and elegant look on your furniture or bathroom door. These types of knobs also compliment the Victorian inspired furniture. But be warned that the function of the furniture using this should only be carrying light loads to prevent the knob from breaking due to strain.

Take Your Kitchen to the Country

Tired of the ultra-modern black and white and chrome of your kitchen? Have you gone beyond the desire for sleek minimalism and long for the comfort of a warm and cozy country kitchen? Many of us spend a lot of time in our kitchens, so comfort is right up there with convenience. Here are some ways to create that feeling of warmth in your kitchen.

Let’s start from the bottom up. You may want to cover the existing linoleum with one of the many laminate hardwood floorings that are available at building supply superstores. Snap-and-glue or lock-together flooring pieces are fairly inexpensive, don’t require a sub floor underneath for installation, and are extremely durable — a good move if you have children or pets. Wood comes in many different shades, so pick one that will work well with your choice of cupboards and countertop.

So let’s think about cupboards. Bring home some earth-colored paint swatches and see what strikes your comfort zone. Try an antique olive green, light mocha or honey. Before painting, wash your cupboards clean of grease and grime, then lightly scuff them with sandpaper and wipe down again to remove loose dust. Mix your chosen paint color half and half with glaze. Apply with a 1-4″ paintbrush, then take a rag made from an old cotton t-shirt and lightly rub the painted area with the rag to give an antiqued texture to the cupboards. Paint the trim in a solid color without the glaze to add contrast. When choosing doorknobs, try copper or wrought iron to create an aged look.

Now for the countertop. Buying countertops can be expensive, especially if you require a custom size or have your heart set on granite. One inexpensive way to resurface the countertop is with ceramic tile, which comes in a variety of colors and sizes. 12 x12 is a good size for countertops, or try smaller Mexican tiles with bright colored designs for the backsplash. After you lay the tiles, grout the seams. Charcoal grout seems to compliment most tile and always looks clean. Finish with two-inch wood trim in a color like red oak for added warmth.

Finally, choose a warm color to paint the kitchen walls. Shades of brown — such as desert sand, rice cake, or light coffee — add warmth to the room and don’t compete with the color of the cupboards. If the room is large enough, one wall could be painted with a darker or brighter color.

With all the basics in place, add decorative finishing touches, such as aged copper pots and pans hanging from a rack above the stove to wicker baskets or antique cooking utensils picked up at garage sales. A pottery or glass water pitcher filled with fresh flowers is a lovely addition.

If you have an eat-in kitchen, a wooden hutch or antique baker’s rack is the perfect setting for your aunt’s tea cozy and your collection of cookbooks. Now fill your country kitchen with the aroma of cinnamon buns made from Grandma’s recipe… and enjoy.

Rental Cleanliness and Curb Appeal

If there was only one thing that you as a landlord could do to guarantee you have your fair share of quality tenant choices, it is to make your dwelling as clean and eye appealing as possible. Tenants like clean. Tenants want clean. And quality tenants will pay for clean. (Quality tenants expect other things too. Go to my website at http://www.findthatqualitytenant.com to find out what).

Offering a rental that is cleaner, with more eye appeal than your competition, will often be the edge you need to find quality tenants. This image begins with what is referred to in the industry as curb appeal. Simply stated, curb appeal is how the property looks from the street.

Outside.

To achieve good curb appeal, I highly recommend spending a little extra preparation time on the front of the house. Start with the yard. Cut back low-lying branches. Trim the bushes. Put in some hostas or easy to manage seasonal bushes. Edge them out and spread a little mulch around. Pick up loose trash and pull the weeds, especially in the cracks of the driveway and sidewalks. Take time to grow grass in the bare spots in the yard. Mow the lawn.

On the house itself, start by washing down the exterior. If the house looks drab, splash on some color by adding shutters to the facade. The easy-to-install shutters sold at most discount/hardware stores are inexpensive and will change the look of your rental with a minimal amount of effort. If, after you add shutters, you still wish to add more pizzazz to the dwelling, paint the front door the same color as the shutters. To finish off the look of the house, add a decorative flag or classy lawn ornament to give the place a little character.

When you are done, step to the curb and look at your property as a whole. What you see is what the tenants will see. The very first thing they will see. Will they be impressed, or will they walk away?

Inside.

Cleanliness inside the home is also extremely important. Nobody wants to begin living in their new home surrounded by someone else’s filth. For this reason, everything needs to look, smell, and feel clean. Begin by making sure all walls, ceilings, and trim work is freshly painted, void of holes, and free of cobwebs. Non-carpeted floors should be swept, mopped, and polished.

Carpeted areas should be professionally cleaned between each and every tenant, no matter how short their tenancy was. Carpets hold dust mites, odors, and about every other germ imaginable. Parents hate the thought of their kids rolling around on someone else’s germ-infested carpet.

I know that many landlords have their own carpet cleaning machines and prefer to take on this task themselves, therefore pocketing the savings. I tried this too but was very unhappy with the results. It was a lot of work and I never seemed to get out the stains and dirt like the pros could. I mean, let’s face it: they have better equipment and superior knowledge to attack stains and other problems. For these reasons, I recommend you use professional carpet cleaners.

.As you can probably guess, in addition to cleaning carpet, walls, and trims, extra effort should be used in preparation of the kitchen and bathrooms. These rooms can make or break how your house rates on someone’s clean-o-meter. Dirty kitchens and baths give tenant prospects illusions of germ infested environments and unhealthy living. Substandard cleanliness in these two areas is the surest way to lose potential quality tenants. Thoroughly clean the kitchen and baths and if you have any doubts that they are clean enough, clean them again. If the thought of cleaning other people’s messes repulses you, hire it out.

While you are cleaning the house for display, don’t forget those often overlooked, neglected areas: ceiling fan blades and lights, fingerprints around doorknobs and light switches, all vents and grills, behind and underneath appliances, mirrors, windows, window sills, and any other place you would normally forget to clean.

Another thought to remember is when landlords prepare their dwellings for rent, they generally concentrate on the visual aspect of the task. Most people fail to remember that the sense of smell is a very powerful sense, especially in women. I recommend you remove all possible sources of unpleasant odors days in advance of the first showing. It would probably be worth the effort of placing a couple of air fresheners around the dwelling. Try using the kind you plug into an outlet, which slowly release an attractive smell for up to a month at a time. The key to success is to have the place smell nice before a single tenant prospect walks though the door.

I know that cleaning a rental to the standards I recommend can be a lot of work. Personally, I dislike it so much I hire it out. Even so, I know for a fact that I consistently rent my dwellings for above market rents, to quality tenants, and I’m sure it is because they always have superb curb appeal and are extra clean. Please, take my advice; Go Clean!

What Kitchen Sets Can Teach Your Child

Pots, pans, a make believe oven–you’d never guess it, but there’s more cooking in your Child Kitchen Set than a plastic plate of make-believe cake. Children learn through play, and in the process of pretending to prepare for a party, or dividing chores among a family of dolls and teddy bears, they pick up important lessons in language, social interaction, and creativity.

Social skills

Ever wonder why pre-schools always have kitchen sets? They’re good tools for teaching social skills like sharing, taking turns, and cooperation. As they pretend to prepare a meal, and then sit down to “enjoy” it together, they learn that toys–and everything else in life–are more fun when shared with other people.

Imagination and creativity

The child kitchen set is very realistic–knobs, plates, and an oven you’d be proud to own yourself. But they can use their imagination to create meals no chef has ever dreamed of, and throw parties that would amaze even Martha Stewart (bet she never had the Queen of Fairyland at her table). The amazing thing about these feasts–aside from the fact that they don’t have any calories–is that they reinvent themselves each time. The game never grows old and boring, because the child can do anything. Truly, few toys have such mileage.

Manners and etiquette

Child kitchen sets can help you teach your child important manners and table etiquette. After you “cook” the play dough pot roast for the pretend party, you can show the “guests” how to thank the chef for a wonderful meal. Even an imaginary tea party (you can play the Queen of England) can lead to a lesson on how “little ladies and gentlemen” should behave at the table. Elbows off the table!

Redefining gender roles

While child kitchen sets were primarily seen as “girl’s” toys, they don’t necessarily promote a stereotype of the traditional housewife. Instead, the cooperative and social nature of a kitchen set reinforce how family chores are equally divided among men and women. Observe your children and their playmates, and how they take turns washing dishes or cutting up vegetables. And if they lapse into standard roles, it’s a good time for you to come in and “teach” them otherwise. “Daddies wash dishes too,” you can say, handing him a plastic plate.

Art skills

Child kitchen sets can come with accessories, but part of the fun is helping the child create his own special pantry. Recycle old cereal boxes and cans, but let him draw or print out his own labels and design his own logos. You can also buy clay that can be shaped into fruits, vegetables and other food stuff, before being baked in the oven to make a delicious “meal”. This may actually be a sneaky way of getting your child to learn about the basic food groups, or practice reading and writing as they copy their own “recipes”.

And who knows, all that interest in a child kitchen set will help your child become interested in real cooking and food preparation. Try giving them simple cooking chores, like washing the potatoes or helping roll the dough, or let them watch you cook so they know what to act out when they’re in their own kitchen. They may be “pretending” today, but a decade from now, you could literally taste the results of what they learned through play. As a result, a child kitchen set makes a great addition to any playroom.

Lemons Add Zest To Life

Lemon trees laden with their winter crop, boughs drooping under the weight of many hued lemons: dark green, lighter green becoming suffused with yellow, vibrant yellow bursting with life, then as they go unpicked and overripe a flush of orange seeps into the knobbly fruit. Until I came to South Africa lemons came from a shop: smooth, uniform yellow skins all year round. Now I have learned to appreciate their seasonal bounty, struggling to use up all the fruit in winter, hoarding away the squeezed juice of the excess lemons in the freezer for summer, when the lemons must come from the shop again and are more expensive and less juicy.

This is the time to think up a hundred and one ways to use a lemon, to dig out all the recipes requiring a lot of lemons: Lemon Curd, Lemon Cake, Three Fruit Marmalade with grapefruit and lemons to balance the sweetness of the oranges. Jane Grigson?s Fruit Book has a wonderful sounding Lemon Tart recipe, that I can?t wait to try, it sounds like the sort of marvel you?d get from a good French patisserie.

Roast chicken can be kept moist and succulent as it roasts, with a lemon stuffed into its cavity. Pierce the lemon?s skin a few times to let the juice seep through, but put it in whole. A spritz of lemon juice on green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, lifts the flavour and replaces some of the vitamin C lost in cooking too. I use up lots of lemons making jam in the strawberry season in spring and early summer. Lemon juice is an essential addition to the soft fruit, to add the pectin that makes it set. Most of my freezer stock of juice will go on that.

On hot summer?s days the lemon comes into its own. Refreshing, iced, home-made Lemonade garnished with mint to slake your thirst ? much healthier than commercial fizzy drinks, despite the sugar. It is additive-free, with loads of Vitamin C and far more delicious than anything that comes in a can.

Recipe for Lemonade
3 large lemons
sugar
soda water

Remove the peel very thinly from the lemons, taking just the yellow zest and leaving all the white pith. A potato peeler works well for this. Put it all into a heavy bottomed pan and cover with 2cm/1? water. Cover with a lid and warm over a very low heat. Do not let the water quite boil or it will bring out the bitterness of the peel. Once the water is strongly flavoured, take off the heat and allow to cool. Strain it into a jug. Squeeze the juice from the lemons and add to the jug, then stir in sugar to taste. It should be sweet and strong flavoured, as you will dilute it to serve. Serve with soda water added, if you like a fizz, or plain iced water and garnish with some slices of lemon and sprigs of mint. The undiluted lemonade keeps for several days in the fridge.

Lemons are a great health boost in winter, adding essential Vitamin C to the diet, to help fight off colds and flu. They also help expel mucus, so are excellent for chesty colds and coughs. My son, who has a tendency to asthma, has a cup of hot honey and lemon every morning, which he luckily likes ? 1 teaspoon of good raw honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice with hot water poured over ? which helps keep his chest clear in winter.

I recently learned a housekeeping tip from Morocco: use a lemon to clean copper and brass. Just rub the cut edge over brass bedknobs or those wonderful Moroccan door plates to bring up a shine, then buff with a soft cloth. The kids thought that was a great idea and now keep running off with half squeezed lemons to polish the spare room bedknobs!

<LI>Bathroom door handles: 340 units </LI>

<LI>Elevator buttons: 130 units </LI>

<LI>Hand straps on subways: 86 units</LI></UL>

Shopping cart handles had more because their larger area gives people more places to put their hands.

Wash With Soap and Water

The report added that washing your hands with soap removes almost all traces of bacteria.

Dr. Mercola’s Comment:Some of the most common sources of viral infections you come in contact with daily hide on commonly used itemssuch as:<LI>Shopping cart handles<LI>Bus rails or arm rests <LI>Escalator handrails <LI>Customer-shared pens <LI>Vending machine knobs <LI>Public telephones <LI>Elevator buttons <LI>Grocery store freezer handles

As in many things involving optimal health, the simple things — washing your hands with plain soap and water, cleaning those handles on your shopping cart or wearing gloves — are often the best means to protect your health.

Unfortunately, in reaction to bacterial studies like this one, more places than ever, particularly stores that sell food, offer free antibacterial wipes that contain agents like triclosan that kill human cells as well as bacteria.

Even worse, a growing number of experts believe the increased use of such products may lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

That said, I am not a big fan of blaming bacteria for illness, as it is your impaired immune system that allows you to get sick. Immune system impairment typically results from not enough sleep, uncompensated emotional stress, not enough sunlight or exercise or eating sugar or too many grains.

However, clearly bacteria and viruses can and do cause illness when your immune system is impaired, and it most likely makes sense to reduce obvious exposures.

If you use a community keyboard, mouse or trackball, consider cleaning it regularly with peroxide wipes prior to using it. You could also use isopropyl alcohol, but I would advise against it as it is far more toxic to your tissue than peroxide — and it is no more effective in killing these germs.

I urge you to review an article I ran three years ago on infected keyboards too.</LI>

Simple Tips to Build the Best Metal Detecting Equipment

A third style, the Printed Spiral, is made only by Tesoro for use with pulse
induction circuitry. It offers good sensitivity to a broader range of target
sizes and improved sensitivity to less conductive targets such as fine gold
chains. All searchcoils are electrostatically shielded and waterproof. If you
were one person who loves adventure in the form of treasure hunting,
then a metal detector would be one of your necessary equipments. Find
out more about metal detectors at metal detector info site.

Hand-held Metal Detectors are designed to safeguard security-sensitive
areas like schools, courtrooms, corrections facilities, sports events,
businesses, nightclubs, bars and other public areas and events. They are
used along with walk-through metal detectors. Metal detectors come
with a control box that contains the circuitry, controls, speaker, batteries
and the microprocessor; a shaft that connects the control box and the
coil; a search coil that actually senses the metal; and a stabilizer that keeps
the unit steady as it is moved.

Simple Tips to Build the Best Metal Detecting Equipment Kit

The most important tool for a painter is a paintbrush while a writer derives
the most use from a pen or pencil. As for the metal detecting aficionado,
one tool he can never live without is a reliable metal detector. Metal
Detectors: The Most Important of All Metal Detecting Equipment

The Brand Says It All - With a superior brand, you can expect your metal
detector to be more reliable and have better warranties and post-sales
services and support. Of course, with a high-end brand, you can definitely
expect the price go up as well. Purpose - Some metal detectors are
better suited for coins and relics while other metal detectors are primarily
designed to detect gold deposits. If you’ve a specific find in mind, you’ll
be able to make a more accurate purchase. Without one, it’s better to
purchase either an all-around metal detector or one for each metal
detecting category.

Location - Similarly, metal detectors are also usually built to better suit a
specific setting. Some are better suited for underwater use while others
will perform more admirably on ground.

Features - This depends on what kind of features you are most in need
of; basic features that all metal detectors must possess are volume
adjustability and sensitivity control. Keep in mind that the more features
the metal detector has, the higher the price tag will naturally be. Metal
detectors using PI (Pulse Induction) technology often makes use of a
single coil or even a series of coils that works as a receiver and the
transmitter. The short bursts of electricity are allowed to pass through a
coil or wire which causes magnetism.

Look for depressions showing where large trees might have been. The
place where a clothes line might have been and outside under the
kitchen window are two places the lady of the house might have laid
something down or dropped something.

Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a
great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts
with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector
should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting
at detect-metal.info. A good way to view the purchase is to decide how
much money you are comfortable spending. It is our view that you
measure this purchase against other purchases you have made.

As with other electronic equipments, innovations seems to always happen
overnight. If you are going to buy a metal detector today, try to know
that technologies are currently employed. You do not want to be behind
the technology line, right?

Mention the words metal detector and you’ll get completely different
reactions from different people. For instance, some people think of
combing a beach in search of coins or buried treasure. Weight and Size -
A tall individual will naturally have difficulties managing a short metal
detector while a physically challenged person will definitely tire more easily
if he has to navigate scores of miles with a heavyweight metal detector.
Do remember that metal detecting will require you to walk for a long
period of time, so it’s important to buy a metal detector that you can
carry and use in utmost comfort.

Brand New vs. Secondhand - If you’re experiencing budget troubles, you
should seriously consider purchasing a secondhand metal detector for the
time being. There’s always time to buy a brand new one when you can
easily afford it.

Making Comparisons - Before making a final buying decision, be sure that
you’ve read all the reviews and compared rates. Without proper research,
it’s very possible that you’ll end up with an inadequate metal detector.
Other Metal Detecting Equipment that’s Worth Investing:

SUV - How else can you reach rough but promising territory without a
vehicle that can survive all types of humps and bumps?

Lights - A head lamp and flashlight will do.

Digging Tools - Once the alarm goes off, the next thing for you to do is
dig.

If you have any doubts about your shopping decisions, never hesitate to
ask an expert. Good luck! How are your “mental detection” skills? Some
youth professionals never notice that they’re working with children in
distress. Not noticing makes it more likely that you might add to the
child’s burdens, and these children already carry a heavy load. You may
also miss any cues that show that this is a child who could one day
explode in violence.

It is responsible for receiving frequencies that bounce back from the
object that the coil detects. This type of detector is best for identifying
different types of metals. Some users put a rubber band around the
knobs to keep them from moving or becoming loose. You should buy a
metal detector that is light weight. This is important when you are
detecting things on a riverbank or body of water.

Prices of used metal detectors vary from $275 to $700 for all-purpose
metal detectors. Underwater metal detectors can cost around $500.
