The Porch Swing

My favorite place around here are the two porch swings, one on the front
of the house and one on the side. A porch swing, with its gentle sway
creating a cooling breeze and of course its squeak is a great place to
gain perspective. Dont underestimate the value of the squeak because
swinging without the squeak is like dancing without music.

This life lends itself to lots of decision making and it is said before
making any serious decisions look at things from a different perspective.
I personally take this to mean I should never make a decision before
thinking about it on both the front porch swing and the side porch swing.

Perspective has several meanings but my favorite is view. The side
porch has more of a business perspective with the dairy barns, silo and
calves in clear sight while the front porch has more of an easy going
perspective.

Business decisions cant be made with just a view from the side porch
swing because our lifestyle doesnt become part of the equation.
Lifestyle decisions must first be made from the view from that side porch
because the farm pretty much dictates when and what we do.

Life is easier from the front porch swing with a view of the traffic on
the slow moving country road, the creek wandering past, the emerald
green, tree covered knobs in the background , and the rolling farmland
in the foreground. The headaches of the farm can slip away, if only for
a few moments from the perspective in the front porch swing.

The side porch swing on the other hand lets us see not only our
upcoming tasks but also our accomplishments. A good herd of dairy
cows, a nice group of heifers, (the future of this dairy) and the facilities
to care for them both.

When things are going well I most enjoy the side porch view but
when I want to escape, the front porch lets me turn my back to the
farm if only for a few moments.

Two totally different perspectives on the same subject both within
twenty feet of each other. I guess its all mental but isnt everything.

Traveling in Wheelchair

Traveling always give a person the feeling of excitement and fulfillment. Visiting new places, eating at a great restaurant or watching your favorite football game at the stadium is a great way to spend a free time. But for disabled individuals, especially for those in a wheelchair, these activities can be overwhelming and difficult. But there are things disabled people can do before traveling to make the experience more relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable.

Say for instance you are thinking of having a meal at restaurant that you saw in the advertisement offering great foods. You can call ahead to make a reservation and to make sure that they have facilities that accommodates disabled individuals. You would not want to arrive at the restaurant and find out that they don’t have ramps and as a result they have to carry you to get inside the restaurant. Nor is it amazing to find out that their bathrooms can accommodate average sized people only but not you and your wheelchair. It is, thus, good to call ahead to make sure that you have a great dining experience.

Here are several questions you can ask when calling for a reservation in a hotel or restaurant. First, ask if they have elevators or stairs. Do they have ramps or elevators in all floors of the building? You can also ask how wide their doors are and what kind of knobs, latches or handles they have. How big their bathroom is? And some other questions that you think you need to know. If the restaurant or hotel has problems with accommodating disabled individuals, you can try talking to the management for the necessary adjustments.

Most business places today are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act to have facilities appropriate to disabled individuals or make adjustments in order to accommodate them. But of course, every disabled person’s need is unique. Hence, your needs will really depend on your environment. If you are in a rural hotel you cannot expect them to offer you the same services given by those in urban places. But still, they have to provide adjustments in order to accommodate you.

So before you get on on with your travel it is important to make the necessary preparations to make sure that you have a great experience. You need not regret anymore that you have chosen the hotel or restaurant because they did not provide you the necessary accommodation. When you come prepared you can be sure to make the most of your traveling experience.

How To Attain And Retain Peace Of Mind

?Do not disturb.? This sign is often times seen on doorknobs of hotel rooms. Obviously, the person on the other side of the door wants some peace and quiet. This kind of peace is superficial, one that is obvious and literal.

There?s another kind of peace most people aspire for. It?s peace of mind. Some people have peace of mind only when they are asleep. Perhaps this is possible only when they are physically tired or exhausted, and the urge to sleep is stronger than the need to have peace of mind.

However, having a disturbed mind will keep you awake night after night. Your entire well-being will be adversely affected. Your physical health will deteriorate. The longer this persists, the more extensive the damages will become. Don?t wait until the damage becomes irreversible.

Find the cause of your troubled mind. Trouble lies in the mind. Ask yourself what is disturbing you. Part of it is probably made up of fear, self-pity, insecurity, and failures, to name a few. All of these are products of negative thinking that pollutes the mind unnecessarily. Face your troubles with courage by casting out the negative feelings of fear and insecurity. Empty your mind of all these negative habits. Don?t leave your mind empty for long to prevent it from leaning back to the negative side.

Keep on casting out all negative thoughts by emptying them from your mind, and refill with positive and inspiring thoughts. Do this process as often as necessary - every time you think you need to. By repeating this process, you are practicing good habits aimed at keeping your mind free of negative thoughts and full of positive vibrations to achieve peace of mind. Ultimately, this habit will become part of your daily activities until you get used to it. Once you do, you will find everything you do to be positive based in an effortless manner.

You may ask, ?Just how do you unload negative thoughts and load in positive ones?? One of the best ways to do this is by visualization. Picture peaceful scenes in your mind. For instance, you can initially picture in your mind a rainforest being battered by stormy weather. Branches of trees are vigorously swinging in all directions. Everything seems to be chaotic, just like a troubled mind. But storms don?t last. They move on. When they leave, sunshine or good weather comes in.

A troubled mind is like a storm in your mind. Once the problem is gone, you will have peace of mind. Try to build a strong foundation of positive attitudes so that when another storm hits your mind, you?re prepared to face it. This is similar to practicing positive attitudes. Going back to the rainforest on a beautiful weather, doesn?t it look and feel peaceful? This is how your state of mind should be - peaceful so that it can be harnessed to obtain an enjoyable life.

There are many other ways to generate a peaceful mind. Think of words that suggest a calm mind - words like tranquil (a tranquil sea), serene, harmony, and stillness. Read poems, phrases, and excerpts that suggest a peaceful mind. You can also join group talks where the discussion is centered on how to achieve a mind harmonious with peace, love, and happiness. If you prefer to be on your own, moments of silence can make you obtain peace of mind. The library is a suitable place to be in. Pick up a book that suggests peace of mind and you may be able to find other means to obtain your objective.

YOUR DOWNSTREAM NEIGHBOR

My kind neighbor up the hill, who knows in some way that my work is related to wastewater, asked me the other day, “You know I have a septic system right? Well, I’m painting the upstairs at my house and I’m wondering where I should wash out my brushes.  Is it harmful to my system or to the environment?”  I thought to myself, I bet this is not the only person who ever pondered what to do in this situation.  Should I ask him into the house for a glass of cold

Staining and Protecting Wooden Fences

If your fence is built out of wood, there is a good chance it will require periodic sanding and staining to maintain its structural stability and attractive design. Wood is porous by nature, and over time, the stained finish wears away, leaving the wood unprotected to the elements. Dirt, pollen, and mold spores settle into the pores, leaving the wood a dull gray. Unless you enjoy the rustic, vintage look, you will need to repair the finish every two to three years.
Begin by inspecting the fence for any rotten, broken, or weak boards. Once the f

Tips for Controlling Home Building Costs

Home building cost overruns can plague any home building or remodeling project. This occurs so frequently that it is recommended you include a 5 - 10% contingency fund in your budget. This will be used for items that you will have no control over, such as problems found with the land once excavation has begun.
Use the 5 tips in this article to control home building costs & minimize cost overruns.
Tip 1: Planning Your Home Building Costs Take the time to plan on paper what you want your house to look like. When doing your bu

Rental Cleanliness and Curb Appeal

If there was only one thing that you as a landlord could do to guarantee you have your fair share of quality tenant choices, it is to make your dwelling as clean and eye appealing as possible. Tenants like clean. Tenants want clean. And quality tenants will pay for clean. (Quality tenants expect other things too. Go to my website at http://www.findthatqualitytenant.com to find out what).

Offering a rental that is cleaner, with more eye appeal than your competition, will often be the edge you need to find quality tenants. This image begins with what is referred to in the industry as curb appeal. Simply stated, curb appeal is how the property looks from the street.

Outside.

To achieve good curb appeal, I highly recommend spending a little extra preparation time on the front of the house. Start with the yard. Cut back low-lying branches. Trim the bushes. Put in some hostas or easy to manage seasonal bushes. Edge them out and spread a little mulch around. Pick up loose trash and pull the weeds, especially in the cracks of the driveway and sidewalks. Take time to grow grass in the bare spots in the yard. Mow the lawn.

On the house itself, start by washing down the exterior. If the house looks drab, splash on some color by adding shutters to the facade. The easy-to-install shutters sold at most discount/hardware stores are inexpensive and will change the look of your rental with a minimal amount of effort. If, after you add shutters, you still wish to add more pizzazz to the dwelling, paint the front door the same color as the shutters. To finish off the look of the house, add a decorative flag or classy lawn ornament to give the place a little character.

When you are done, step to the curb and look at your property as a whole. What you see is what the tenants will see. The very first thing they will see. Will they be impressed, or will they walk away?

Inside.

Cleanliness inside the home is also extremely important. Nobody wants to begin living in their new home surrounded by someone else’s filth. For this reason, everything needs to look, smell, and feel clean. Begin by making sure all walls, ceilings, and trim work is freshly painted, void of holes, and free of cobwebs. Non-carpeted floors should be swept, mopped, and polished.

Carpeted areas should be professionally cleaned between each and every tenant, no matter how short their tenancy was. Carpets hold dust mites, odors, and about every other germ imaginable. Parents hate the thought of their kids rolling around on someone else’s germ-infested carpet.

I know that many landlords have their own carpet cleaning machines and prefer to take on this task themselves, therefore pocketing the savings. I tried this too but was very unhappy with the results. It was a lot of work and I never seemed to get out the stains and dirt like the pros could. I mean, let’s face it: they have better equipment and superior knowledge to attack stains and other problems. For these reasons, I recommend you use professional carpet cleaners.

.As you can probably guess, in addition to cleaning carpet, walls, and trims, extra effort should be used in preparation of the kitchen and bathrooms. These rooms can make or break how your house rates on someone’s clean-o-meter. Dirty kitchens and baths give tenant prospects illusions of germ infested environments and unhealthy living. Substandard cleanliness in these two areas is the surest way to lose potential quality tenants. Thoroughly clean the kitchen and baths and if you have any doubts that they are clean enough, clean them again. If the thought of cleaning other people’s messes repulses you, hire it out.

While you are cleaning the house for display, don’t forget those often overlooked, neglected areas: ceiling fan blades and lights, fingerprints around doorknobs and light switches, all vents and grills, behind and underneath appliances, mirrors, windows, window sills, and any other place you would normally forget to clean.

Another thought to remember is when landlords prepare their dwellings for rent, they generally concentrate on the visual aspect of the task. Most people fail to remember that the sense of smell is a very powerful sense, especially in women. I recommend you remove all possible sources of unpleasant odors days in advance of the first showing. It would probably be worth the effort of placing a couple of air fresheners around the dwelling. Try using the kind you plug into an outlet, which slowly release an attractive smell for up to a month at a time. The key to success is to have the place smell nice before a single tenant prospect walks though the door.

I know that cleaning a rental to the standards I recommend can be a lot of work. Personally, I dislike it so much I hire it out. Even so, I know for a fact that I consistently rent my dwellings for above market rents, to quality tenants, and I’m sure it is because they always have superb curb appeal and are extra clean. Please, take my advice; Go Clean!

Curb Appeal

If you are in the buying or selling market of real estate, you have most likely
heard the buzz word “curb appeal”. What is it and why is it important?

First, lets start with what it is. Curb appeal is quite simply the rate of
attractiveness your home projects to viewers from the street. Why is this important?
As the definition states, it is the ultimate first impression. You may have
an immaculate, luxurious interior but without high curb appeal, few will bother
to step inside to see it. This is even more important when selling on your own
because you don’t have a realtor to hype the interior as worth a viewing. Is
it worth the trouble to invest, if you don’t have good curb appeal? The payback
value on exterior upgrades to your property range from 49% for landscaping improvements
to 62% for exterior home improvements, such as painting. Next to the kitchen
and bath, these are the highest payback ratios for home improvements and are
well worth the initial investment. In the order of highest payback value, we
have provided some tips to help you achieve higher curb appeal for your home:

Exterior Painting

Painting the exterior may appear daunting and not worth the effort, but research
shows that it results in the greatest return on time and money for exterior
improvements. As a guideline, when choosing color, a long and low house looks
most appealing with colours that emphasize vertical elements such as doors and
shutters, while taller more narrow homes should contrast its horizontal elements
likes fascias and gutters. Window boxes are a nice touch as well. If painting
is out of the questions, the bare minimum improvements should be to: Wash the
full exterior to clear it from dirt and cobwebs. Renting a high pressure washer
is best. Fix any loose, missing, or damaged shutters. Clean, paint, or replace
mailbox, doorknobs, and street numbers. Windows Especially with a freshly painted
or washed exterior, dirty windows will stand out like a sore thumb, and will
date them past their true age.

Tips for cleaning windows - Do not clean windows while they are in direct
sunlight. Your cleaning solution will dry too fast. Using a 100% cotton cleaning
cloth, dip the cloth in cleaning solution and wring out excess before wiping
the window to loosen dirt. Using a squeegee, start each stroke in a dry spot,
and squeegee in a pattern from top to bottom or side to side. If you are cleaning
the outside and inside of the window, alternate the pattern on each side (i.e.
top to bottom on the inside and side to side on the outside). This will make
it easier to identify which side any streaks are on. Keep your squeegee blade
dry by wiping it with a cleaning cloth between strokes. Nicks in the squeegee
blade will cause streaks. Replace when needed. If you do not have a squeegee,
newspaper will dry freshly washed windows, whereas papertowel or cotton will
leave lint behind. Cool clear water is the choice of solution by most professional
window washers. For very dirty windows, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar per gallon
of water.

Landscaping

Homeowners should plant colorful flowers along walkway leading to the door,
prune existing trees, shrubs and bushes, and add fresh mulch. Clean out dead
plants and weeds from flower beds and refresh with colorful plants and annuals.
Taller plants at the corners of your house will help anchor it with the landscape.
Shorter plants near your home’s entry bring attention to your front door. However,
this could have a negative impact if the front door is in need of repair (another
reason to rethink the exterior improvements noted previously). Last but most
definitely not least and probably most important, ensure your lawn is trimmed
and green. If you have a lawn in need of attention, you may want to consult
a landscaper for advice before trying to repair on your own.

Overall Appeal

Some further touches that will go along way to increasing the appeal of your
home from curbside are:

Outdoor lighting - Exterior lighting in your garden, walkway or entrance
area add a warmth and welcome feeling that will make a viewer want to see more.

Indoor lighting - While your house is on the market, leave lamps on
in 1 or 2 front rooms. It brings the home to life and, again, provides the same
warmth and welcome feeling as the exterior lighting. Exterior lighting alone
will not provide the appearance of a well loved, lived in home, like the combination
of exterior and interior lighting can.

Furniture - As long as the chairs are well kept and not cluttered looking
within the space, two chairs on a front porch provides a tremendous visual appeal
from the street. Buyers view the exterior as an extension of the home and will
want to view more. The best advice for creating great curb appeal, is to take
a walk through your favourite neighbourhood. Analyze what works really well
and what doesn’t. Then determine why and incorporate those items to fit your
own exterior. Most of all enjoy the outdoors and don’t get too overwhelmed by
the work at hand. February, 2004 - Xstream Realty Incorporated

Time Saving House Cleaning Tips

So, you don’t like doing house work. Can’t afford to have someone clean for you? Here are some interesting tips to help you get out of the house, and out doing something you’d rather be doing.

There are certain things that anyone can get by with doing weekly, monthly, and then those jobs that just need to be done every 6 months to a year. These tips will help you cut down on the time you spend each week, and those we can sweep under the rug for a while!

To start off with I try to do something each night, that way I don’t have to spend a day doing just cleaning. It makes it a lot easier and you get your day off to do exactly what you want to do.

There is some way that those little dust bunnies just come back, no matter how hard we try to dust them away. So the first chore is:

Furniture: Dust all hard surfaces.

Floors: vacuum or mop (dust bunnies love all the tile and hardwood that we have in our homes now)

Now those two things can be done while listening to some good tunes or just catching up on some pent up energy.

There is one thing that we must do every day and that is eat. So I like to clean the kitchen while I’m cooking dinner. I spend a few moments doing the following while I wait for the water to boil.

Kitchen sink: Scrub and disinfect

Appliances: wipe down surfaces

Microwave: clean and deodorize

Refrigerator: Clean interior

Okay so now we have the easy stuff out of the way and we get to do the hard stuff! No one and I really don’t know anyone that likes to clean the bathroom. But it’s gotta be done!

Counters: Wipe down and disinfect

Bathtub/shower: Scrub down and clean

Toilet: Scrub (with a toilet brush) and disinfect

And the last of the weekly chores. Change and Launder the sheets.

The Monthly chores may take a little more time to do, but you’ll find that once you get started it is not to much to take on. Maybe even do just one or two a week.

Upholstery: Vacuum

Liven Up Your Walls With Decorative Plates

Liven Up Your Walls With Decorative Plates

 by: Johann Erickson

Decorative plates are often overlooked when decorating a home. Yet, it’s the details that really make the elements of a room come togetherand decorative plates are a detail present in most rooms. While there are decorative plates that are solely functional in purpose, most have the potential to add to the ambiance of a room. Think about the following wall plate options:

Cover your decorative plates in wallpaper that matches your wall for an understated elegance. You can also use this method to hide outlets on walls that display art.

Wood decorative plates are perfect for a room with a country or colonial flair.

Metal decorative plates come in a variety of textures and materials. Metal wall plates enhance contemporary, Victorian, and rustic decor.

Porcelain decorative plates complement shabby chic, bathrooms, and some Victorian design.

Mirror decorative plates can be used on mirrors, mirrored walls, or even as an eclectic detail in a uniquely decorated room.

Match your decorative plates with cabinets, doorknobs, and furniture hardware. With the wide variety available, you can also tailor them to table lamps and other light fixtures. Since wall plates come in all shapes and sizes, you can match them to the curves of your furniture placement. Matching will cleverly enhance featured pieces in a room without distracting from their appeal.

In addition to decorative plate style, you may want to consider changing the switch itself. Dimmer switches are available as dials, slides, touch pads, and combinations of each. The ability to adjust lighting in each room of your home provides you a way to highlight specific room features or set the appropriate mood.

Decorative plates, often taken for granted, are a versatile design element. They can be romantic, sophisticated, sleek, or fun. First decide what you need your decorative plate to do for a room, and then shop for it as seriously as you would shop for furniture, wall coverings, or carpet.

Shopping For Barbeque Grills For Tailgate Parties

There is a big difference between going shopping for the barbeque grill you buy to grill your steaks, burgers and hotdogs on at home, and the barbeque grill that you go shopping for barbeque grill for tailgate parties. They have the same properties for the most part, such as flame, charcoal, and metal. That?s where the similarities end.

When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you are going to be looking for something that you can do some stainless steel cooking with. The barbeque grill system you are looking for will require some cash, so make sure you have at least $6,000 with you when you go shopping for barbeque grill for tailgating parties.

A barbeque grills, that is used for tailgating parties after a sports event of any kind, or for any flea market concession stand where you want to sell drinks, hotdogs, burgers, and perhaps corn-on-the-cob. When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgating parties you are looking for a grill that has at least six burners, and is attached to a black-steel painted trailer on two wheels that you can tow behind your car with ease.

Many of the styles you will find when you go shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties will be made of stainless steel and feature a insulated stainless steel wells where you can keep an ample supply of cold beer, cokes and cold dishes that you will serve party goes from the back end of your grill.

These mobile grills are ready to get the party rolling in about 10 minutes. They can fit in on any type of vehicle that is suitable to mount a trailer hitch to. Some people do remove the handles for the grill cooking knobs before getting on the road, because it would be a shame to arrive at your destination without them.

When shopping for barbeque grill for tailgate parties, you want to look for a grill top that is at least 48 inches and is a roll dome top. The cooking service of the grill should be over 1000 square inches. That might sound rather large, but when you have over 1000 people lined up for some of your barbeque, and they are wiling to pay you about $7 or more per sandwich, and more for ribs, then it would be a shame not to have enough cooking space to prepare good food for them to eat.

When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you should look for a cooking grate that will heat to 800 degrees quickly. Tailgate partiers are revving to go at a NASCAR race and they want their food fixed fast and properly. An 800 degree temperature will take care of all those requirements.

You should have dual 30 lb propane tanks on the barbeque grill you are planning to purchase. When shopping for barbeque grills for tailgate parties, you should make sure that you have stainless steel cooking grates, two stainless steel insulated coolers with a drain and a grill that is designed for convection cooking.

What Metal Detectors are Best for Metal Detecting on The Beach?

As you will often find metal detectors are used for treasure hunting and finding relics as well as there being many models and types available each will have its own set of different features, as well as the quality and reliability of each model differing also. Certainly each metal detector available has its own disadvantages and advantages.

But like many people you are unsure what kind of metal detector you should purchase and hopefully the information provided below will help you in your quest to find one that is suitable for use on a beach.

The first one we are going to look at is the White Spectrum XLT. Not only is it easy to use but it is well known for being user friendly (even a beginner should have no problems with this one). There is a manual available for this metal detector which is easy to understand. Often you will find that most people use this model when either in Beach or Jewelry mode at the beach (it also has a relic mode but this does not seem to work as well on the beach). This model has the added bonus of being very convenient to carry.

Now we are going to look at the White Pro XL 6000 which many people buy because of its look. This unlike the White Spectrum has less buttons for you to scroll through when you need to adjust or change settings. Yet it still may take you some time to familiarize yourself with all its features but once you do you will see how useful they can be. Unfortunately although the Pro XL 6000 seems to have more depth and intensity than the Spectrum, there is one fault with this model in relation to the knobs on it which can become loose and you have to be careful not to knock them when making any adjustments. Also any jarring or bumping to this model may also result in you having to start or reset any adjustments you have already made because of its knobs being so sensitive. In fact some people who use this model have found that rubber bands work quite effectively when wrapped around the knobs to stop them moving or becoming loose.

Ideally when purchasing any metal detector it is best to buy one that is light weight this is especially important when you are looking for things on either a riverbank or in a body of water. Although it is good to know how to make adjustments to the frequencies of the metal detector especially when using it on a beach it is also important to find the right place or location for using it. Preferably the modes on any metal detector should be adjusted so that the depth and intensity will be specified and clear when using in any location not just on the beach and always familiarize yourself with the metal detector you are using prior to commencing any searches so that you can get the best results possible.

J C Christian is an avid follower of metal detectors and how they work. He runs an informational site that follows Garret Metal Detectors, Fisher Metal Detectors, Tesoro Metal Detectors, and Kellyco Metal Detectors just to name a few. Go to http://www.metal-detector-guides.com
to find information to help with everything metal detecting.

15 Fast, Fun and Easy Christmas Decorating Ideas

Decorating your home for the holidays does not need to be stressful or expensive. Being one of the most popular times of the year to decorate, get your family involved and have fun making your home beautiful for the holiday season.

Here are 15 Christmas decorating ideas:

1. Display your favorite Christmas collections. If you don?t have a collection, now is a great time to start! My son and I collect nutcrackers and every year we have a wonderful time selecting just the right one. With a permanent marker, I write the year on the bottom of the nutcracker. Not only do we enjoy looking at the nutcrackers during the holidays, we also enjoying the fond memories of selecting them.

2. Make simple bows out of Christmas ribbons and attach them to your curtains with pins. This is a very charming look.

3. Decorate your house plants by hanging small Christmas ornaments on them.

4. Place a collection of Christmas books on your coffee table.

5. Fill a glass bowl with pine cones and Christmas balls and place on a shelf or table.

6. Wrap your staircase banister with indoor Christmas lights, garland, and bows.

7. To add scent throughout your home, tie 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks together in a bundle using Christmas ribbon. Make as many bundles as you wish and place around your home in baskets or bowls.

8. To decorate your table, tie Christmas ribbon to the stems of glasses and/or handles of cutlery.

9. To dress up your chairs, tie Christmas bows around the chair so that the bow is on the back of the chair.

10. Using a small brush or q-tip, paint the edges of pine cones with glittery gold craft paint. After the pine cones dry, place them in a decorative basket.

11. Add Christmas garland to door frames, window frames and mirrors. You can use tape to secure the garland to the surfaces.

12. Tie bows around door knobs using festive and colorful Christmas ribbon.

13. Attach garland and Christmas bows to your chandelier. You can also weave strings of red beads in the garland that will dangle down from your chandelier and reflect the light, which will add sparkle.

14. If you live in a milder climate, consider decorating with Amaryllis plants. These beautiful plants come in red and white, grow tall, and provide a very elegant look.

15. Don?t forget to decorate your fireplace mantel and hang your Christmas stockings. A few fireplace mantel decorating ideas are adding garland, different styles and sizes of Santas, teddy bears, and candles. You can also display your favorite nativity scene if you have a large enough mantel.

Be creative with your fireplace mantel because most mantels are the focal point during the holiday season. Another decorating idea for your mantel is to purchase a bunch of miniature rosemary trees shaped like Christmas trees, add mini ornaments to them and line them up across your mantel. These miniature rosemary trees are readily available during the holidays and come in festive containers.

Christmas decorating is a great time to create traditions and spend quality time with your family. Get out some snacks and drinks and create a little ?decorating party? that your family will love and look forward to year after year.

Happy Holidays!

Organic Home Furniture Goes Mainstream

Organic foods have been around for decades, and those concerned about the pesticides and chemicals used in industrial farming have long turned to organics to ensure that the foods they eat are healthy and pure. Increasingly, though, people who don’t consider themselves to be naturalists or environmentalists are embracing eco-friendly foods and home furnishings.

Whether out of a concern for the diminishing rain forests or for the chemicals found in the carpet that their baby crawls on, there is a growing market for eco-friendly furniture and home furnishings. From organic mattresses made from cotton and wool to wood furniture made from reclaimed wood, there is a myriad of eco-friendly home furniture from which to choose.

Typically, manufacturers of eco-friendly wood furniture and decorative wood home furnishings use reclaimed timber. In other words, the wood that is used to make furniture was logged long ago and was once a bridge or other structure. By using reclaimed wood, furniture makers recycle timber that has already been logged instead of cutting down trees. Similarly, makers of eco-friendly bed linens use cotton grown on small organic farms or wool harvested organically raised sheep.

The variety of available eco-friendly wood furniture and other wood home furnishings is astounding. Many of the pieces have artisan craftsmanship, and can be proudly displayed alongside antique furniture. Wood furniture inspired by the Viking and Celtic peoples is very popular. A CD cabinet, for example, might feature Celtic scroll carving embellishments or knobs engraved with a Celtic knot pattern. Likewise, a Celtic desk might include a lattice footrest or brass handles, and be made from antique elm wood.

The popularity of Viking motifs is gaining, especially in decorative pieces. For example, a shield featuring Viking sea dragons inspired by historic carvings found in Sweden dating from between the ninth and twelfth centuries adds a touch of history and mystery to a living room’s d?cor.

Reclaimed wood is also used to make Egyptian-inspired wood furniture and decorative pieces. An Egyptian jewelry box, for example, might feature miniature hand-paintings and carved hieroglyphs, while Egyptian candlesticks might feature carvings that replicate those found on King Tutankhamen’s ceremonial chair.

From rugs to linens, from carpeting to wood furniture, eco-friendly home furnishings conserve the Earth’s resources while providing consumers with items rich in beauty and historical significance. Whether one’s tastes runs to antiques, to the Viking or Celtic eras, or to the mysteries of ancient Egyptian tombs, there are certainly organic options for home decorating.

Avoid Colds And Flu With A Natural Immune Booster

Winter is upon us, and with that brings the dreaded cold and flu season. Doctor?s offices will begin to fill as patients with bronchitis, colds and flu and similar ailments seek out relief from their myriad of symptoms. What most individuals don?t realize is that have to ability to prevent these nasty illnesses before they even start. One good method is good old-fashioned hand washing. Frequent vigorous hand washing will get rid of all the germs, bacteria and viruses that you will undoubtedly pick up from doorknobs, other people, as well as by touching other things that people carrying these germs have come into contact with. Most people have been told the importance of hand washing, yet many fail to practice it, which leaves them vulnerable to catching a host of winter illnesses.

If individuals simply can?t adhere to a strict hand washing routine, taking mega doses of vitamin- C on a daily basis is a surefire way to prevent becoming sick. Two thousand milligrams a day should be sufficient, and please don?t let the instructions on the bottle confuse you or make you think that you are overdosing. Vitamin-C is constantly being used by our bodies, and if taken in large amounts, whatever our bodies can?t use will be excreted through the urine. But most of the time, your immune system will need that extra boost from the vitamin-C, in order to assist it in fighting off the countless illnesses.

Of course nothing is foolproof, and many people will still get ill, despite taking the vitamin-C. Stress can wear a person?s body down to the point that nothing helps them avoid becoming sick. There is a chance, though, to lessen the severity of the illness and shorten its course, should you feel yourself becoming sick despite the daily vitamin-C. As soon as you notice the first symptom, such as a sore throat, sneezing or runny nose, try slowly increasing the amount of vitamin-C that you take, yet only temporarily. If you increase the dosage too quickly, you will develop diarrhea, which is actually cleansing, yet of course quite troublesome, especially for busy individuals. Everyone has their own person requirement, so if and when you do develop diarrhea, that is simply an indication that you?ve surpassed your maximum dosage?or either increased it too quickly. Simply cut back a little at a time, until the diarrhea has passed. Then you will have discovered your own personal dosage. Only take this mega amount until all symptoms have subsided, then you can resume the 2000 MG dosage

Selling A Home What Attachments Stay or Go?

The home selling and buying process can be confusing. This is especially true when it is a FSBO (for sale by owner) operation. Its even tougher when neither the seller nor the buyer is in the real estate business. This article sorts through what stays in the house or condo when its sold.

Attachments Literally!

In most states, the term attached takes on a unique meaning in real estate. Essentially, it boils down to this, If its attached to the real estate, its no longer personal property. Practically speaking, anything attached to the home stays with it when ownership is transferred. Applying this concept, its easy to see why chandeliers, doorknobs and kitchen cabinets stay.

To determine whether something stays or goes, focus on the attachment issue. Plants can often be a confusing item. Generally, it they are planted in the ground, they stay. If they are in planters, they go. With other items, just look to see if they are attached to the property.

I Am Seller Hear Me Roar!

If youre a seller, youve probably spent a good bit of time and effort on the property. What if you want to take a few attached items with you? Can you legally keep it? What if youre thinking, That fixture hanging over the breakfast table has a real Tiffany shade? It was a wedding present from Aunt Elizabeth. Im keeping it!

Keep your shirt on. There are a couple of ways that typically work when you want to keep an item or two of this sort. The first is to simply state in your offering blah, blah, and blah do not convey. (If it really matters, call an attorney to get the language right) This approach has one drawback. Human nature being acquisitive as it is, your buyer will probably immediately want at least two and the items will become a bone of contention.

There is a better way to deal with this situation. Before putting you home on the market, remove all items that have become attached to the real estate. Buy another hanging lamp, hang it and pack your Tiffany lamp. Do that for all items of this sort. Be sure to replace each with something attractive and do it well enough that its not obvious that a change has been made. When prospective buyers look at your home, everything they see will stay with the home. You are happy, they are happy, everyone is happy! Life is good.

Analyze your home for attachments before you put it on the market. You wouldnt want to make Aunt Elizabeth angry by losing the wedding present she gave you.

Having feelings that you must perform rituals such as these over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Overview

Do you wipe off the doorknobs in your home each time someone touches them? Or do you consistently go to great lengths to avoid walking on sidewalk cracks? Or, worried that you might cause a fire, do you repeatedly check to see that you’ve turned off the stove? Having feelings that you must perform rituals such as these over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, your ritual behaviors may literally take over your life. You have distressing, unwanted thoughts or images that don’t make sense to you. These thoughts or images keep coming back despite your efforts to resist them. You may strive to hide your condition from friends and co-workers for fear of being labeled crazy.

Doctors once believed that obsessive-compulsive disorder was a rare condition, but it’s now known to be more common than other mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. More than 3 million Americans have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder doesn’t affect just adults. The disorder often begins during adolescence or early childhood. About one-third to one-half of adult cases begin in childhood.
Although there’s no cure for obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatments can help you get the disorder under control.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder include:

Obsessions

These are recurrent, persistent, unwanted ideas, thoughts or impulses that you experience involuntarily and that appear to be senseless. They commonly intrude when you’re trying to think of or do other things. Common obsessions include:

 Fear of dirt or contamination
 Concern with order, symmetry and exactness
 Constantly thinking about certain sounds, images, words or numbers
 Fear of harming a family member or friend
 Fear of thinking evil or sinful thoughts
Compulsions

These are repetitive behaviors that you’re driven to perform regularly to combat your obsessions, even though to you — and to others — they may seem irrational. You may even make up “rules” to follow that help control the anxiety you feel when having obsessive thoughts. Typical compulsions include:
 Excessive hand washing
 Repeatedly checking that doors are locked and appliances are turned off
 Arranging items in a precise order
 Repeatedly counting to the same number
 Touching certain objects a precise number of times

When you perform these rituals, you may feel some relief from anxiety, but not for long. Soon your discomfort returns, and you feel compelled to repeat your behaviors.

If you have an obsessive-compulsive disorder, you probably know that your repetitive thoughts and behaviors are irrational and senseless, but you can’t free yourself from them. You may be able to control unwanted behaviors for a while, but your resistance may weaken after months or years of struggle. Eventually, your rituals may take up more and more of your day, making it virtually impossible to lead a normal life.

There’s a difference between being a perfectionist and having obsessive-compulsive disorder. Perhaps you get all of your work done a week ahead of schedule, you compete at sports like a pro, and you keep the floors in your house so clean you could eat off them. That doesn’t mean you have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Instead, you may belong to a large group of people who are sometimes called compulsive. That just means you hold yourself to a very high standard of performance in all that you do. This behavior contributes to building your self-esteem and success. These are not the behaviors seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder interfere with everyday functioning.

Causes

Doctors don’t know the exact cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Some researchers theorize that its cause is biological, while others feel the disorder stems from learned behavior. Still others believe the cause of the disorder may be both biological and environmental factors. An insufficient level of serotonin, one of your brain’s chemical messengers, may contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Imaging studies that use positron emission tomography (PET) scans to compare the brains of people who have obsessive-compulsive disorder with the brains of those who don’t, show differences in brain-activity patterns. In addition, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder who take medications that enhance the action of serotonin often show great improvement.

Risk factors

Your risk of developing an obsessive-compulsive disorder is slightly higher if your parents or other family members have obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, researchers haven’t identified any genes responsible for obsessive-compulsive disorder. You may also have a biological predisposition to react strongly to stress. This reaction may, for some reason, trigger the intrusive thoughts, rituals and emotional distress characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

When to seek medical advice

Shame and embarrassment may keep you from seeking treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. But even if your rituals are deeply ingrained, treatments can help. If you suspect you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, see your doctor or a mental health professional.

Tennis Shoes: A Buyer?s Guide

While the term ?tennis shoes? is commonly used in reference to athletic shoes of any type, you should not wear running shoes, walking shoes, or cross-trainers when playing tennis. These types of shoes do not provide the correct support and can increase the risk of foot and ankle injuries. In addition, such shoes can also damage the tennis court surface.

There are several criteria tennis players should consider when selecting tennis shoes. First, the court surface you primarily play on will dictate the type of tennis shoe you need. Second, the characteristics of your feet and body will determine what type of tennis shoe is most comfortable and effective. Finally, as with any type of shoe, different people value certain shoe attributes and qualities more than others.

Tennis players that play on hard court surfaces should choose tennis shoes that are durable and resistant to wear. Repeated play on hard (i.e. concrete) courts will wear the tread off the soles of tennis shoes. Loss of tread leads to loss of traction and increased slipping. In addition, the part of the tennis shoe that covers the big toes should have extra protection on the outside. Tennis players often drag their toe while executing shots, especially the serve. It is crucial for right-handed players that the inside toe area of their right tennis shoe have extra protection to prevent premature wear. This area of the tennis shoe is particularly vulnerable because most right-handed players drag their right foot when serving, and often when executing forehand groundstrokes.

Tennis players that play primarily on soft court surfaces (i.e. clay) should select tennis shoes that are comfortable and provide good traction. Durability is less of a concern. It is also vital that the tennis shoe have a smooth, flat sole. The knobs and bumps found on the soles of running shoes and cross-trainers can damage clay court surfaces. In fact, most clay court facilities do not allow players to wear such shoes, instead requiring appropriate tennis shoes.

Feet and body characteristics are an important consideration when selecting tennis shoes. People who are prone to blisters must wear tennis shoes that fit properly and are well cushioned. Advances in tennis shoe technology have created cushioning systems that are lighter, more comfortable, and better at removing moisture. Body type is also an important consideration in tennis shoe selection. For example, larger and heavier players may prefer heavier shoes that provide extra support.

Finally, as with all types of shoes, personal preference and taste often determines what type of tennis shoe a person purchases. Many players desire a tennis shoe with a certain look or color scheme. On a more functional level, some players may select lightweight tennis shoes in an effort to enhance foot speed and agility.

After you determine the type of tennis shoe is right for you, it is important to select a shoe that fits properly. Because tennis involves a lot of sprinting, cutting, stopping, and starting, you should select a tennis shoe that fits snugly across the width of the foot. You should, however, make sure that your tennis shoes have at least a half-inch of space between the toes and the end of the tennis shoe.

Behind the 2006 Saturn Vue (laurey)

Behind the 2006 Saturn Vue

Totally refurnished from inside to out, the new 2006 Saturn Vue has been given a full update on its appearance inside and outside, plus, it has also been given a tons of changes in terms of its details - and these could actually increase consumers’ desire for this new vehicle.

For this year, the Saturn Vue is now equipped with a new hood, grill, and headlights, and gone are the large and old headlights that once had adorned this vehicle. In replacement for that, the Vue has been given cooler projector-style lamps. The overall image that this vehicle exudes is clean and geometric. Plastic body pieces are installed for this, which is commonly a hallmark of its brand, Saturn. Designers have used the gap between the hood and the fenders as an international SUV-appropriate styling element, thus giving the hood a clamshell kind of look. The Saturn Vue also has had high-performance spoilers, a one-inch-lower suspension, 18-inch wheels, and a unique grill installed in it.

As per its interior, the center console is flanked by bars of convincing faux wood. Also giving it a modern kind of look are the stereo controls and HVAC knobs that has a sleek design. Redundant radio controls on the small, three-spoke steering wheel have been placed in, and passengers in the back are treated to a DVD entertainment system. For its seats, the fabric is new, although leather could be an option and has been made available. The space is just enough, yet it still is small enough for city-driving. This SUV has 70/30-split rear seats that fold flat and the front passenger seat could also be folded so as to carry items that are up to eight feet long. Standards for this vehicle are cruise control, power windows, door locks, mirrors, and remote keyless entry with a security system.

Safety has never been an issue with the Saturn Vue for OnStar is standard. Also standard are dual-stage driver and front-passenger airbags and traction control. Optional, though, are anti-lock brakes, front and rear head-curtain airbags.

In a nutshell, the 2006 Saturn Vue is a good choice for people looking for an all-weather wagon that exudes a good image and has a nice interior, plus a plastic body that is dent-resistant. It certainly is a rarity in the market for the updates that has been done on this SUV has made it a one-of-a-kind vehicle. It also offers a 3500-pound towing capacity that is enough to handle most small boats. After being around for quite a few years, it has proven that it has a keen interior and a class-leading power.

The 2006 Saturn Vue is one of the best entry-level luxury SUVs on the market, and nothing is befitting than the excellently crafted Saturn parts and replacement parts at Auto Parts Deal.

Tips For Refacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Are your cabinets looking a little worn down and shabby? If so, you may want to revamp the look of your kitchen cabinets by resurfacing them. Refacing your kitchen cabinets is a cost effective way to give them a new appearance. Instead of replacing the entire structure, you can simply replace the surface. Refacing your cabinets will offer a new look for your room and greatly improve the durability of your cabinets. You will be adding years of life to your cabinetry.

Generally, a refacing or resurfacing project will be performed by a professional. The entire project involves replacing the cabinet drawer fronts and doors, as well as adding a new veneer to the base cabinet. The cost will depend on type of wood you want. Prices can range from $4000 to over $10,000. The amount of time it takes to complete the project will also vary. Some projects can be finished in as little as 2 days while others can take up to a week. It usually depends on how large of a kitchen you have.

Refacing your cabinets is a wonderful alternative to replacing them; however, you must make sure that your cabinets are still in good condition first. If the structure of your existing cabinets is in poor condition then you will not benefit from resurfacing them because in time they will need to be replaced anyways. Also, keep in mind that your current layout will not be changed when you resurface so if you are looking for a new layout then you may want to redesign and replace your cabinets all together.

The alternative to refacing your cabinets is to refinish them. Refinishing your cabinets involves painting or staining them. Refinishing your cabinets can prove to be the most cost-effective option, and also offer the best return on your investment. Painting your cabinets is the easiest and least expensive way to create a new fresh look. If you happen to be crafty with your hands then you may be able to save yourself even more money by painting your cabinets yourself, either freehand or by using stencils. Once you finish putting a new layer of paint on, all you have to do is add new drawer pulls and knobs. This entire project can be done for as little as $500.

Bottom line, cabinets are one of the main focal points of a kitchen and for that reason it is very important to keep them looking good. If your current cabinets are starting to look worn down, but they are still sturdy and structurally sound then you may be able to give them a face-lift without spending all the money that you would have to on replacements. Rather than plan an expensive, total replacement of cabinets, consider having your cabinets resurfaced at up to half the cost in material and labor.

Walia Ibex

In historical times C. walie always seems to have had a very restricted range (Yalden & Largen, 1992). This species is currently found only in the Lemalimo to Walia Kend-Silki sectors of the Simen Mts. in north Ethiopia

Categorical-discrete (CD) distribution model

This species is strictly associated to montane escarpment areas with long-grass savanna, scrubs, trees and forests (Yalden & Largen, 1992; Nievergelt, 1981; Kingdon, 1997). The walia ibex is a grazer and browser. It eats bushes, herbs, lichens, shrubs, grass, and creepers. The percentages of each of these was found by one study to vary from 30% (bushes) to 10% (creepers). (Dunbar 1978)

IUCN threat category

Critically Endangered (CR: criteria C2b).

The habitat of the Walia Ibex is the High Semyen, Ethiopia’s dramatic high mountain terrain. In the earth’s long history of violent geographical change, the most recent volcanic upheavals took place in eastern Africa, followed by torrential rains which created the thousand gushing waterfalls which in turn eroded away the newly formed mountain massif, creating the great gorges and gulleys which are so typical of the region. South west of Axum the land descends gradually southwards toward the Takazze river. At the lip of the gorge at about 1,400 metres (4,600 ft.) one can look across the chasm to a similar plateau beyond. On top of this plateau, adorned with steep turrets and bastions rising in three distinct steps, is perched the north wall of the Semyen.

The mountain massif is a broad plateau, cut off on the north and west by this enormous single crag over 60 kms. (40 miles) long and 1,000-1,500 metres (3000-5000 ft.) high. To the south the tableand slopes gently down to 2,200 metres (7,000 ft.) divided by deep gorges 1,000 metres deep and taking two days to cross. Time has not yet been sufficient to soften the contours of the crags and buttresses of hardened basalt. As far as the eye can see looking north from the escarpment, the fused volcanic cores stand starkly defying the elements. Overhead stretches the vast dome of a sky of the deepest blue, which spreads downwards as clear as sapphire to the mauve of the horizon.

In this scenic splendour, lives the Walia Ibex; here and nowhere else in the world. Forced by Man to retreat, and to retreat again, it has been driven in its extremity to inhabit the most inaccessible (except to a bird or a Walia), cliffs of the Semyen escarpment. The Walia once existed in significant numbers probably several thousands in the highland massif, feeding on the cliff faces and coming up to roam the plateau at rutting time. Large herds wandered unmolested on these chilly heights.

Even up to 50 years ago there were well over a thousand. With the Italian agression in Ethiopia, the species started its dramatic decline to the brink of extinction. Guerrillas fighting the Italians and living off the country found the Walia a convenient source of meat. Later, the local people again took i up arms against the Walia, killing perhaps five in order to reclaim the meat from one. Most of them, whose wounded bodies spin and crash from the narrow ledges where they feed, into the abysses a thousand ieet or more below, are never recovered. Rarely, a rope descent will bring to the surface the meat and parts of the skin, but the trophy, the splendid horns desired by locals to make drinking mugs, and by sportsmen to decorate their sitting rooms, are usually lost forever.

First recorded in 1835 by Ruppell, and first properly observed by Powell Cotton at the beginning of the century (l900), the Walia at that time was a mythical beast and little was known of its numbers and status. The inaccessibility of its habitat combined with various historical events such as the Italian occupation and World War II, which made visits to the region out of the question for longish periods, has prevented the keepiug of a continous record since then. So until Leslie Brown made his preliminary study in the early sixties, little was known of its behaviour or habits.

A remnant of the early incursion of Palearctic fauna into the tropics, the nearest relative of the Walia is the Nubian Ibex (C. nubiana). There is a gap of several hundred miles of lowlands between the southern- most limit of the Nubian and the highland habitat of the Walia. The Walia differs in being 1arger and more massive, with dark brown as opposed to pale brown fur. The horns of the males are more massive but not quite so long, and have the knobs or ridges on the anterior surface reduced. The Walia has a bony process on the forehead. The anatomical differences together with the differences in habitat have lent weight to the argument that the Walia is a distinct species.

The terrain which the Walia inhabits is from 2,300- 4,000 metres (7,500-13,500 ft.) but chiefly above 2,500 and below 3,000 (8,000-9,500ft.). The tiny remnant population which remains is now con- fined to a range of about twenty miles of the highest and steepest bays and buttresscs of the northern escarpment. They are already extinct in all other parts of their range which once stretched from Byeda along the escarpment to Geech and Adis Gey.

The narrow vertical range which they tend to occupy today would seem to be the result of persistent hunting. They have become extremely wary and shy and chosen to be not get-atable from top or bottom. With protection maybe they will once again emerge on to the plateau.

Mountain sheep and goats have feet that are special- ly adapted for living in mountainous terrain. Their hooves have sharp edges and the undersides are concave, enabling them to adhere somewhat like suction cups. To watch even the youngest and smallest of the Walia kids gambolling about on slanted rocky ledges in a cliff face of terrifying steepness, a 500 metre drop only inches away, makes one catch one’s breath with anxiety. They never fall.

The males and the females both have horns, but the males’ are more massive. Curving back in a graceful arc to the withers they sometimes attain a length of over 110 cms. The females are smaller in body and lighter in colour with shorter thinner horns. They live in small parties of two to half a dozen and the big old males often live solitary except during the mating season. Because of the rarity of the animal, it is not often possible to observe a large male and one feels privileged to do so. The magnificent horns and striking colouration make it an unforgettable sight.

They are sturdily built animals standing about a metre high at the shoulder and weighing up to 120 kgs. Their beautiful chocolate to chestnut brown coats shade to greyish brown round the muzzle, paler grey around the eyes, lower flanks, legs and rump, and pale grey or white on the belly and inside of the legs. There is a black stripe down the outside of the legs and a white garter on each fetlock broken in the hind legs by a black streak into the cleft of the hoof. Mature males sport an elegant black beard. The tail is short with a brushlike tuft of black hairs.

You can usually observe them when come out on to the rocky ledges to sun themselves in the morning and evening. Little herds of females and young are not uncommon, or even single females with a kid at foot. Sometimes you will see a yearling group of young males which can be distinguished by their paler greyer colour and the thickness of their small short horns. They eat grass and herbs, but prefer to to browse rather than graze, standing up on their hind legs like domestic goats to reach the tender shoots of giant heath. There is no shortage of food, as inside the forest of heath there is abundant forage of herbs and sweet soft grasses. They tend not to drink although water is plentiful; it is assumed that they get sufficient moisture from the green stuff on which they feed. They usually lie up in caves or thickets during the day, although this is not an in- fallible rule and I have observed them at lunchtime - a group of youngsters playing in the sun.

The Walia’s story is not yet ended. In 1963 it was classified by the IUCN as in danger of extinction. In that year the total number remaining alive was estimated at less than 200, probably 150. Indiscriminate hunting and destruction of habitat by local people had combined to drive the few remaining animals on to the vertical cliff sides for survival- (Only four adult males have been taken since 1956 by legitimate shooting). Fortunately before the end came the Ethiopian Government recognized the danger and, in 1965, drew up plans to establish a national park to protect both the habitat and its fauna, and the park was gazetted the same year. It was found that numbers had remained steady for two years, indicating that with protection they might increase fairly rapidly. Guards were appointed from Geech to Mietgogo to curb local poaching and illegal cultivation and burning of habitat. In the past fifteen years, numbers have increased steadily, as the females are still ready and willing to breed in the caves in the cliff face.

At the present time, not less than 10% of the cliff surface is composed of broad ledges or green gullies in which Walia can feed. Brown estimates that this amount of land space can support a population of two or three thousand. The Walia has no natural enemies apart possibly from the occasional bird of prey, and thus with complete protection from Man they could be expected to recover their numbers and to double the present population in ten years.

At present it is still difficult to properly enforce the protection laws, and the local people cannot be expected to know that this animal exists only here. Nor could they realize that it could be anticipated to generate a far larger income if allowed to live and breed, than its dead parts will ever earn. It can only be hoped that the precipitous terrain in which the last survivors live will enable a nucleus herd to survive until such time as visitors from all over the world will be able to come and observe this rare creature in the magnificence of its mountain habitat.

Is Refacing Cabinetry a Solid Investment?

Being a Custom Cabinetmaker and Finish Carpenter I’m frequently asked what I think about refacing cabinetry as opposed to demolishing the old cabinets and starting from scratch.

I generally pride myself as someone who has an open mind. While I have strong opinions on a variety of topics… I like to offer options to people rather than to come off as someone who knows it all. Besides, I don’t “know it all.”

That being said, to say I’m not a fan of refacing cabinetry would be an understatement! I’ll give you the Pro’s and Con’s and let you be the judge.

If you have a refacing specialist in your home you are likely to hear something like…

Refacing cabinetry is an inexpensive way to update your kitchen’s look with a minimum of inconvenience and without all the dirt, debris and noise associated
with demolishing your kitchen and starting over.

Now, to be fair, there is some truth in the statement above. Refacing does typically cost less than having a custom cabinetmaker, like myself,
completely redo your cabinetry. (Though it’s not inexpensive!!!) The project will also be completed in less time than a custom cabinet job.

The problem is, they make no mention of quality or durability or improved functionality and forget getting a decent warranty!

In order to understand the problems with refacing cabinetry you need to know a little about the process. They typically remove and throw away the: doors, drawer fronts, door hinges, drawer slides and cabinet door knobs (if any).

Then, the cabinets are “roughed-up” by sanding and sometimes a chemical stripper is used as well. The refacing installer then adheres a wood veneer to the exposed surfaces. Typically, the veneer has a PSA backing (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) and it is firmly pressed to the old wood surface to make it’s bond.

The veneer is trimmed and detailed. A new wood stain and protective finish is applied. The final touches include installing the new doors, drawer fronts,
miscellaneous hardware and possibly the attached moldings.

The Con’s come down to Quality and Freedom! The PSA wood veneer is very thin and very frequently starts to bubble or lift off the old wood surface within a year to 18 months.

If you happen to catch something on an edge of the veneer you may very well peel it back or tear it altogether. If someone, say a child, happens to scratch
the veneer surface it will most likely expose the old wood surface as the veneer is very thin.

As far as freedom goes, you didn’t get to change the cabinet’s interior. If you had fixed shelves before, you probably didn’t get to upgrade to adjustable
shelves as this is too much work in retrofitting.

If the old kitchen layout wasn’t to your liking, your newly “updated” kitchen isn’t going to work any different.

The list goes on and on…

By the way, if you’re still not convinced, ask around and find someone who refaced their kitchen two years ago or more and find out if they’d do it again. Just make sure they don’t work for the refacing company!

Lancashire (lb brass) Hotpot and Yorkshire Pudding Recipes

Lancashire Hotpot and Yorkshire Pudding Recipes

Lancashire Hotpot

A dish from the county of Lancashire.

Ingredients:

2 lb lamb

4 lambs kidneys

20 fl oz hot water

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

2 lb potatoes

? lb onions, chopped

1 bayleaf

A sprig of thyme

Tablespoon flour

Knob of Butter

Fat or oil for frying

Salt and pepper

Method:

1. Peel the potatoes and cut into thick slices.

2. Skin, core and chop the kidneys and chop the lamb meat into small cubes or chunks.

3. Brown the cubes of lamb and kidney in a hot frying pan with a little oil. Continue until all the pieces have been browned then put them in an oven proof casserole dish.

4. Keeping the same oil used to brown the meat, brown the onions.

5. Once the onions are golden brown stir in a little flour to soak up all the oil and juices in the pan.

6. In a measuring jug add the Worcestershire sauce to the hot water and then pour and stir into the pan with the flour etc. Take care to pour slowly and blend the mixture well, or else you may end up with a lumpy mixture.

7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

8. Now gently heat the pan and bring the contents to a simmer. As soon as it is simmering, take off the heat, then pour over the meat and kidneys in the pot.

9. Add the thyme and bayleaf. Now lay the potato slices on top of the meat to form a cover by overlaping the slices.

10. Add a few small knobs of butter on the potato roof and cover with a tight fitting lid.

11. Place in a preheated oven at 325′F (gas mark 3) or (170′C) for about 1? hours.

12. Remove the lid and return to the oven for another 45 minutes - to help brown the potato and finish the cooking.

Yorkshire Puddings (makes around 6 puddings)

These are easy to make as, most people fail at the cooking park - the oven has to be very, very hot and the pans should be smoking when you remove them from the oven!

Ingredients:

10oz of plain flour

1 large egg

A large pinch of salt

5oz water

5oz milk

Oil

Method:

1. Preheat the oven at about 200 degrees, pour about 1cm of oil into each section of a muffin tin and place in the oven.

2. Mix the egg, water and milk together, Sift the flour into a big bowl.

3. Pour the mixture slowly onto the flour. As you start to pour beat the mixture together with a whisk. Add the salt and continue to beat.

4. Once all the ingredients have been beaten together leave to stand, for about half an hour.

5. Once the oven is hot enough (very hot), remove the tray and for the puddings and pour off the oil.

6. Fill each sectipon about 3/4 full with mixture and put straight back into the hot oven.

7. Bake for about 20 minutes (try not to open the oven during this time as the yorkies could sink) till they are risen and brown. Remove from the oven and remove from the tin straight away.

Serve with Roast Beef and loads of gravy.

Detecting Metals in Water

In general, larger searchcoils will give better depth with larger targets and
better ground coverage. However, sensitivity to smaller objects may be
sacrificed. Smaller searchcoils will offer greater sensitivity to smaller objects
and improved target separation in trashy soil. Be it out of sheer hobby or
more on the professional level, you really would not perform well treasure
hunting if you do not have a good metal detector to explore with.

There are many different kinds and styles of metal detectors - gold
detectors, coin and jewel detectors, beach-hunting detectors,
underwater metal detectors, handheld and walk through metal detectors
In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell constructed one of the world??s first metal
detectors in an attempt to find an assassin’s bullet in President James
Garfield. Fischer patented a portable version in 1931.

Detecting Metals in Water

Many people are involved in metal detection underwater. Most of these
people would prefer to hunt metals on beaches. There are many benefits
that one can get from detecting metals in beaches. Most of the people
go on these types of metal detecting trips not because they are after the
elusive treasures, but because of the relaxation that it gives. Well,
perhaps the treasure is the ultimate reason why they do this, but what
keeps them coming back is the experience itself. Going on a water
detecting trip to the beach is one of the most relaxing activities since the
beach offers sights and sounds that no other place can offer. The waves,
the birds, the sand and the people, what more can you ask for? Treasure,
perhaps.

So what does one need to do to be able to make his metal detecting trip
to the beach a worthwhile one? Here are some ideas.

1. Get the right equipment

Taking an ordinary metal detector to a beach (water) metal detecting trip
is probably not a very good idea. If you plan to do this activity for a long
period of time, it would be best to get the appropriate equipment for the
job. There are many models today that offer water-proof features and
can read through water and sand better than other models.

Metal detectors using PI (Pulse Induction) technology often makes use of
a single coil or even a series of coils that works as a receiver and the
transmitter. The short bursts of electricity are allowed to pass through a
coil or wire which causes magnetism. ome detectors have more ways of
adjusting the “fit” to the person. Some of the other ways that detectors
adjust are that the arm cup can be raised or lowered, and the box
containing the board and controls can be taken off of the pole and
mounted in a small pouch. Many people say to us “I have always wanted
to do this!”

Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a
great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts
with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector
should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting
at detect-metal.info.

Any place that someone would spread a towel would be a spot to loose
something in the sand. Change could fall out of a pocket when getting in
or out of a car. Where ever a concession stand might have been is a good
area to search. Look for places that people might have gone after dark for
a romantic interlude. A good time to check out the beaches is after a
large storm.

Youve got to buy a metal detector that could withstand normal wear and
tear longer than its competitors. The longer the metal detector can serve
you, the better your return on investment will be. For walking speed,
remember the paint rollerr analogy above. As long as you are painting the
entire surface of the ground and not missing any spots, you are not
walking too quickly. However, if you find that your imaginary paint is
missing areas, you need to slow down your pace.

2. Plan your trip

Planning a water detecting trip at the beach is an important factor which
can determine your success and can influence your experience in general.
Beaches are very busy during weekends and it is perhaps not a very good
idea to detect metals during these times. You will want to go treasure
hunting on week days if you can because there are not as many activities
going on at the beach. This will give you more space to roam around.

3. Spot the other beaches

Find out more about metal detectors at metal detector info site. If there
are beaches in the periphery which are not as popular as the other
beaches, try them out! There’s no harm in doing so, and arguably, the
chance of finding good stuff there is higher.

4. Get a map

Purchase any map that lays out the entire beach frontier. Try to map out
your directions and mark the spots where you have been; this is especially
helpful for people who do not have a good sense of directions.

5. Make sure you don’t leave your marks

Cover your holes so people don’t get injured and the beach doesn’t look
messy. These are just some ideas on detecting metals in the water. Try
to enjoy the experience and you’ll find it a treasure in itself. When hand-
held detectors are switched on, a red signal pattern in transmitted from
the coil to the ground. When the signal comes in contact with a metal, it
interrupts the signal and the detector alerts the user with an audio signal
and flashing lights.

It is responsible for receiving frequencies that bounce back from the
object that the coil detects. This type of detector is best for identifying
different types of metals.

Some users put a rubber band around the knobs to keep them from
moving or becoming loose. You should buy a metal detector that is light
weight. This is important when you are detecting things on a riverbank or
body of water. Most metal detector companies also offer supplementary
services like designing, material sourcing, prototyping, short run
manufacturing, upgrading or re-designing, assembly services and specialty
packaging.

Advantages of Kitchen Granite Countertops

Kitchen granite countertops are created by nature and fashioned by man are a beautiful, durable and cost effective choice for kitchens and baths. The term granite comes from the Latin root word granum, which means “grain.”

Granite is often imported from Europe, Africa, Brazil and other regions of the world rich in natural stone. Granite is an attractive natural stone that will add color and warmth to your kitchen. Granite is an extremely hard material that will not blister, scratch or crack.

The hardness of granite is rivaled only be the hardness of diamonds. In fact diamonds are used to cut and polish granite.

Over the last 10 years kitchen granite countertops have become popular with homeowners, after first being popular with designers for decades. Granite is available in hundreds of colors, from various shades of white to browns, reds, greens, blues, and black. The most popular tones are brown and beige.

As well as being hard kitchen granite countertops can take hot items, like pots and pans, and is very stain resistant to hot grease and oil if it is sealed with a silicone-based impregnator. It can easily be cleaned and cut for a basin. Granite has a cool polished surface that makes it an excellent surface for rolling out pastry dough. The polished finish of granite will not wear off.

Kitchen granite countertops are unique because no two pieces of granite are exactly the same, therefore granite provides an interesting design element and adds certain richness and texture to your kitchen not found in other surfaces. Kitchen granite countertops can create a brilliance and elegance that is only found in nature. Granite adds a personality and character to kitchen countertops that is unsurpassed. Kitchen granite countertops have a natural beauty that is capable of complementing any tone of wood or style of cabinets.

It doesn’t matter if you are planning a new home or remodeling an existing kitchen, with granite kitchen countertops you can be sure that you will add to value of your home.

Kitchen remodelers and home builders have experienced a boom in the demand for kitchen granite countertops. Although it can be more expensive to put in granite countertops, they remain the odds on favorite choice for more upscale homes, since they keep their value better than most home improvements

The investment you make in kitchen granite countertops should pay you back at least three times what you invested. If you are selling your home you will find that home buyers wanting kitchen granite countertops will be willing to pay more for your home than if you have ceramic tile or plastic laminate.

Planning out your kitchen granite countertop first involves selecting the right granite color. You should concentrate on the most popular colors. Even though granite tones are usually neutral, you may find that a certain color goes well for your kitchen design.

If you are replacing the old countertop material in your kitchen with granite, carefully diagram all the measurements for the granite installer. If installing new cabinets is part of your kitchen remodel ask the granite fabricator what they recommend for cabinetry.

Since you are using such a superior product as granite, you should think about the right type of sink to go with your new kitchen granite countertop. You should definitely consider going with an undermount stainless steel sink, as opposed to an overmount sink that would be difficult to clean around.

In addition to getting the right kind of sink installed, it is also important to select the just the right faucet to go with the sink. A stainless steel faucet would go well with the looks of a rich kitchen granite countertop.

The next important area is upgrading your cabinet hardware. The handles and knobs should also be of high quality in order to provide good accent to the overall look of the kitchen. Even if you are not replacing the cabinetry having high quality hardware with make those cabinets and the whole kitchen

stand out.

So in planning your kitchen remodeling, just remember that kitchen granite countertops will make a provide a world-class addition and increase the re-sale value of your home.

Bathroom Accessories

Accessories are important they can make all the difference; it can turn that plane Jane bathroom unto a designed show place fit for the cover of a magazine.

It just takes some imagination and a little talent to create a total bathroom makeover. First, you should select your theme. Would you like to accessorize your bathroom into like an Egyptian Oasis? How about a Tropical Paradise, or change it up to the mysteries of the orient with an Asian Flair. On a more formal note, why not recreate an English Garden motif in your bathroom, Or how about an under the sea escape. All is possible with just a few changes.

Choose a main color theme have one wall a dark or medium color and the other walls a lighter shade of the same color and or a lighter coordinating color. Instead of the multi colors, you can choose wallpaper, fabric or a nice grass cloth. I wouldn’t have the paper or fabric on all the walls, use it only on one or two walls, to make things interesting. Also by using different mediums on the different walls, it adds dimensions, and creates a larger feel to the room.

Lets get started you can started with fixed home hardware accessories, you will be able to fine your home hardware to match with any theme you can imagine, and a variety of finishes in each style. You should match or choose coordinating hardware. Have your showerhead and handles should coordinate with your matching sink faucets and tub faucets, and tie that in with the knobs on the bathroom cabinets and towel bars.

Loose Hardware such as toothbrush holders, paper holders, tissue covers, and trash receptacles, candleholders, decorative boxes, and jars, are available to match the other the other home hardware accessories you have selected. However, it’s total not necessary to have exact matching accessories, in fact it makes it more interesting if you choose things that coordinate and flow with each other rather than exact matching articles.

Selecting a lamp or lighting fixture to fit with any of these themes will be very easy there are so many styles and finishes out there to choose from, that will fit with any d?cor. Framed mirrors add a lot of charm and interest to your sink area.

A baskets of multi toned rolled hand towels are functional and decorative and add lots of interest. Small stones and or pebbles in unusually shaped clear or translucent glass jars and or vases creates a soothing feel, to add color, use a silk orchid plant standing in the small stones. Adding a shelf with votives candles and jars and vases, make for charming interest, add some pieces that match with the theme you have selected, or try staggering three shorter shelves to stage your art and continue the flow of your theme.

Don’t be afraid of change, you should change up your home and bathroom accessories with the changing seasons and holidays, it keeps things from getting boring to have a change from time to time.

The Origins of Our LCD Screens and High Definiton Plasma TV in Vintage Computer Monitors

It may be amazing to current computer users who are used to small compact LCD monitors. Not only were initial computer monitors large and cumbersome but that the early monitors used by computer enthusiasts were Cathode Ray Monitors that were not color,

Initial vintage monitors were monochrome - one color only not the brilliant color displays that we take for granted today.

Some of these monochrome monitors were green or orange iridescent. Others were similar to a black and white television that is grey scale.

It is taken for granted now by young computer surfers and gamers that television was always “color”, not so.

Initially TV broadcasts were in “black and white “.

Color TV had been developed but the technology but the widespread use did not arise till the early 1970’s and even later in some areas.

The broadcasts were seen as black and white on those sets and color on color sets.
Color TVs could receive programs that were in the black and white mode as well. Sort of the backwards compatibility of the day.

What then would be the difference between the picture qualities of a television set a monitor has vastly greater resolution than standard TV sets.

The TV sets of that time (as opposed to current high end LCD and plasma high definition TVs) were basically 1950’s technology - even the newer color TV sets. .

A monitor’s screen display should be stable and of good quality, since the computer user may sit very close to the monitor and spend many hours reading the display.

If the images are fuzzy (low resolution) or waver constantly, you would have a throbbing headache and wavering eyes in no time.

Monitors have knobs to adjust for clarity. On vintage monochrome monitors these usually include a brightness knob which adjusts the illumination of the entire screen, and a contrast knob which makes the letters lighter or darker in relation to the background screen newer color monitors will have additional adjustments for color.

The question will arise - how did the vintage CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors initially handle the color technology which came later and became the accepted standard.

A typical color monitor screen worked in much the same way as a standard CRT television.

The inside of the picture tube is coated with three different phosphors: red, green and blue.

Phosphors are special chemical compounds that glow with characteristic colors when bombarded a stream of electrons.

The phosphor gets “excited” and thanks to the additive properties of the color wheel the different colored lights resulting get mixed and that all types of combinations of the three primary colors result.

The end result is that virtually any color of the rainbow can be produced.

And as for the color white the eyes play a useful trick. When all three colors are mixed together in equal quantities, the eye sees this as “white light”.

Finally the sharpness of the CRT color monitor or a TV set’s image is determined by three factors: the monitor’s bandwidth, its dot pitch, and the accuracy of its convergence.

Although the bandwidth and dot pitch are important to determine a good monitor, convergence is the real measurement.

Indeed we have come a long way from the initial simple vintage monochrome monitors. What we now take for granted with LCD monitors and indeed our high definition TV sets all originated with simple CRT monochrome monitor technology which was merged with the technology and tricks gleaned from the color TV industry.

We should all be grateful. We owe much to “Uncle Miltie”.

Bathroom sink

The bathroom sink is a necessary area of the bathroom. It is where the individual will do much of his daily personal care. Yet, for many people, the bathroom sink is not the most attractive place to do so. Many will have a vanity that is unclean from years of use, unattractive since it has been there for many years and it may also have broken elements to it. By simply fixing up the bathroom sink, the homeowner can completely transform a bathroom into a livable area again.

There are many ways to do this. The easiest would be to replace the entire vanity at once. This would include the faucet that dispenses the water and its knobs, the sink basin that is where the water is held, and the vanity or the unit that houses the sink. These elements are generally sold separately but can often be found as one too. To replace these, it will take a little skill to pull them out of the walls and off the plumbing. This should be done carefully as replacing plumbing that is broken needlessly can be costly.

Once removed, the individual should carefully look at the floorboard that is under the vanity unit. If this area has not been updated, it may need to be. If it shows any signs of water damage, it is necessary to replace it. Usually, this is not an overly difficult job. Plumbing should be checked as well.

Once this is done, the bathroom sink should be chosen. The sink and its unit should match the surrounding bathroom appliances and d?cor (or it can be the thing that sets the rest of the design off!) Insuring that the proper fitting is there is also key. One popular thing to do is to add to the bathroom a pedestal style bathroom sink. These are unlike vanities as they feature just a sink on a tall pedestal, without any storage. This storage may be made up in some other area of in the bathroom.

Because of its importance in the bathroom, the sink should be carefully chosen to meet the needs of those that live here. It is necessary for an individual to insure that it is properly hooked up. A single drip of water can cause the sink to rot the floorboards below it. Also, look for a stylish faucet that you enjoy. The faucet alone can set the style for the entire bathroom.

HDTV Is What Technology Is All About

If you have not yet watched TV on an HDTV you do not know what you are missing. When they promote high definition they aren?t kidding. When my daughter was born I knew I?d be spending a lot of time at home so I invested in an HDTV and two years later I still think it was an excellent purchase. Not only is the picture unbelievable but the sound is much improved as well.

More and more channels are starting to come out in HDVT format so buying an HDTV makes much more sense now as compared to two years ago when I bought mine. When I first got it I think there were only four channels I could watch in HD. They happened to be four channels I watched a lot so it worked out well for me. As time has passed the TV?s themselves become even cheaper and more channels are available so they are a much better purchase.

Many people are not aware that by the end of this year, from what I have read, all TV signals will be sent via HDTV format. In order to watch TV you will either need a HDTV or you will have to have a converter to attach to your existing TV. The converter will not make your current TV an HDTV all of a sudden, it will just allow you to continue to get the same picture you have always gotten. Those converters are going to go for roughly $250 or so, based on my past research.

Now you are considering buying a HDTV, I have convinced you, right? How do you decide which kind to buy? There are regular tube TV?s that are HDTV ready. There are LCD and plasma TV?s. Budget will be a major factor in determining which one to buy. The tradition tube style TV?s are cheaper and they will also fit some existing entertainment centers. The flat screen TV?s will need to be mounted on the wall or most likely require a different kind of base than the entertainment center you currently have.

I did a lot of research before buying my TV. I ended up buying a 42? Sony LCD projection TV. It is a beautiful picture. I am very pleased with the purchase. But, none of these TV?s is without flaws. This particular model has a bulb that helps to project the image to the screen. It has a shelf life of about 18 months. I have had it replaced recently. The bulbs are a couple hundred dollars. Thankfully I purchased the maintenance plan when I bought the unit. Other than that I couldn?t be more satisfied. I can turn out all the lights in the room and throw in a DVD and it is better than going to the movies. I do have mine hooked up to a home theater system. Without that the sound would not be good enough to compare to a movie theater.

Some of the issues with the other kinds of TV?s are: the tube style TV?s are not as compact as the flat screens obviously. They do not get as big as the flat screens. I think the biggest I have seen is 36 inches. Because they are so much cheaper than the other two styles that is all I could think of as problems for the tube style TV. Plasma TV?s on the other hand are the worst buy of them all, in my opinion. My research discovered that plasma TV?s eventually burn out. Whatever is used inside the screen to project the image burns out and cannot be repaired. So, your picture will progressively get worse and you can?t do anything about it except wait for it to get so bad you need to buy another TV. This is a major problem given the price of these types of TV?s. They are the most expensive of the three types. There is no doubt they look nice when you first buy them. They look great in the room you put them in. They are very appealing to most people.

No matter what kind of TV you end up buying the bottom line is that you are going to be amazed the first time you watch your favorite show or sporting event in HD. It is actually funny to me when I look back and think of what TV?s I used to watch when I was little. We had those knobs that you could hear being turned down the street. No remotes, no cable or satellite, and we had to constantly fiddle with the rabbit ears to get a decent picture. I watch a program in HD and I sometimes wonder to myself how they are going to make watching TV in the future even better. It doesn?t seem possible but you know it is. History has shown things only continue to get better.

Rocktron Digital Short Timer Delay Pedal

Rocktron Short Timer Delay

Review by Les Lewellyn
copyright 2004 by Preying Lizard Music.com

As I’m preparing to put my band together to tour I am also building my arsenal of tools to play electric. My financial situation is limited and so I have to be very careful about what I purchase. I roughly need about four or five items in my chain. The first is the Crybaby, the second my distortion, third a delay and fourth a multieffects processor that I can program in about twelve “way out there” patches that suit my style. After spending a few hours reading up on delay pedals I came across the Rocktron Short Timer Digital Delay pedal. One site I visited actually had sound clips of the pedal in use and as soon as I heard the thing I knew it was exactly what I was looking for!
After shopping it online I found the average going price to be about fifty to sixty U.S. bills. Fortunately there is Ebay and I am a Ebay believer! I’ve never been ripped off by anyone there, knock on wood. Anyway….I got it in the final minutes of a auction for $35 and that included the shipping! When it arrived it looked brand new and I hooked it up immediately and I played with it for a few minutes.
There are three knobs and two switches on the unit. The first knob is the level, the second is called regeneration, and the third is the time of the delay. There is a “short” and “shorter” switch/button and then a kill switch. The unit is made of metal and sturdy as a horse. It’s built to last without a doubt. Anyway none of the knobs and switches make any extreme changes in the sound. It’s basically a cut and dry slap back sound much like David Gilmore uses. After tinkering with the unit for a few minutes checking out the extremes I immediately dialed in my sound. It was there and I’ll probably never change the settings at all.

Promising Locations For Metal Detecting Finds

A metal detector should not be bought solely on the suggestion of one person (no matter how good a friend). If you are new to the hobby, you should realize that long time detector users can be very committed to the particular model and brand of detector that they have been using. They are generally unfamiliar with anything newer or different. As you can probably tell metal detectors are very useful not only to find that cherished earring but for our everyday safety and well being. This is a great invention that will be here for years to come.

A recent study proves that hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate as x-rays in finding coins and other metallic objects swallowed by children. They are cheaper and radiation-free, are usually lightweight, highly sensitive and require little maintenance. The special shape of the sensitive surface makes operation of the device easy, unlike portable metal detectors with ring transducers. In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell constructed one of the world?s first metal detectors in an attempt to find an assassin’s bullet in President James Garfield. Fischer patented a portable version in 1931. The basic metal detectors are easy to get used to, with less features and buttons. Find out more about bounty hunter metal detector today!

Promising Locations for Metal Detecting Finds

If you’re at a loss on where to start searching for buried treasures, get your metal detectors and flashlights ready and blinking because we have several suggestions in mind for you: National Forests - It’s a good place to start exploring because most rangers are courteous and quite willing to help metal detecting aficionados like you. You’re also allowed to own any finds you detect as long as it’s less than 50 years old, file a claim, and even prospect for gold.

Indian Reservation - These are very promising locations, indeed, but you have to be Cheyenne to legally search in Cheyenne land and so forth. If you don’t look Indian, you’d better find someone who is.

Backyards - Yes, just your very own backyard could easily do, especially if it’s OLD land. You can also ask your neighbors’ and friends’ permissions if they’re willing to let you delve into their backyards. Promise them a share of your finds if that will help. Lastly, it’s always best to procure written consent to avoid future complications. Beaches - With the sun, the breeze, and the waves doing their things, it’s no wonder that beach lovers are so caught up with nature’s beauty that they tend to misplace and lose some of their valuables.

Youve got to buy a metal detector that could withstand normal wear and tear longer than its competitors. The longer the metal detector can serve you, the better your return on investment will be.

The good news is that prices have never been lower for such easy to use full featured automatic detectors. A good way to view the purchase is to decide how much money you are comfortable spending.

Any place there is construction and the ground is being cleared, that is a great place to start treasure hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts with having the right metal detector. But which type of metal detector should you get? Complete info on metal detectors and treasure hunting at http://detect-metal.info. Go to your local ” do it yourself ” coin operated car wash. Look for the place where they dump the contents of the 25 cent vacuum cleaners. Search the piles and see what a gold mine they are for coins and rings.

Some metal detectors use BFO (Beat Frequent Oscillation). This technology contains two coils of wire. The two coils are represented by two wires which is the large and the small. The large coil can be found in the search coil of the detector while the small coil is found on the System Control Pack.

Metal detectors work on the principal of electromagnetics and their effects on conductive metals. There are actually two separate elements in the coil of a typical unit. One is a high-powered coil of metal which uses the battery power to generate a penetrating magnetic field. Playgrounds - Be sure to search specifically on grassy or shady areas as these are the places that people mostly frequent, and consequently, lose things. Finding a toy isn’t that bad if it happens to be a charming limited edition, eh?

Fields - It’s best to head out for the fields after a heavy downpour because you’re more likely to discover hidden riches at these times. Don’t forget to wear proper rain gear or you’ll be too sick afterwards to enjoy your finds!

Riverbanks - Drop by at your local library and research for riverbanks that were once the site for ferry launchings or important social events. These particular spots are more likely to yield delightful finds than other places. Cemeteries - Most cemeteries are built on very old lands. If your metal detector happens to indicate prospective finds under the grave, however, do respect the dead, and move on to another path.

A Word of Warning

Wherever you choose to rummage around for long-forgotten and long-lost booty, make sure that you have legal permission to do so at that place. Ask around if authorization, a license, or any legal document is required before you can hunt to all your heart’s content.

A recent study proves that hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate as x-rays in finding coins and other metallic objects swallowed by children. You could find rings, bracelets, necklaces, coins or anything metal. Depending on the brand of metal detector you buy and model it is you will get different results. Just ask or research to find out what kind would best suit you.

It does, however, have its own downsides. Some say that the knobs of the Pro XL are quite loose and when adjusting it, you have to be careful not to hit it with your arms. It is quite sensitive and bumping it may require you to start or reset the adjustments. Some users put a rubber band around the knobs to keep them from moving or becoming loose.

Most metal detector companies also offer supplementary services like designing, material sourcing, prototyping, short run manufacturing, upgrading or re-designing, assembly services and specialty packaging.

Fishing Reel Basics

Different fishing reels are needed for different waters and fishing styles.

Fishing reels are the most essential component of fishing gear. However, there are so many manufacturers and so many different types of fishing reels, how do you know which one is best for you. The three main kinds reels ? spin casting, bait casting, and spinning all have their pros and cons. The type you need depends on what kind of fishing you do.

Using a fishing reel for the first time can be frustrating, especially if they style of reel is new to you. Beginners often start with a closed-face reel which helps keep the line from tangling. The most popular style is probably the spin-cast or spinning reel. With these the reel hangs under the rod and the line is held on an open spool. The line is controlled by a bail for casting and tension knobs for controlling the fight. Casting takes a little practice, but keeping your forefinger pressing the line against the handle before casting will prevent the line from coming off the spool.

Baitcasting on the other hand takes a fair bit of practice in order to become accurate and avoid line tangles. You must master controlling the tension of the line. To do this you need to match the weight of the lure to the tension on the line and then finally the power of your cast. But once you do, they’re great fun and allow very accurate casts in very tight spots. For this reason alone they are a popular choice with pro bass fishers.

Learning to use all three types of fishing reels will give you an enormous advantage when you go fishing. By matching your reel and other fishing gear to your type of fishing you will have much greater success.

Tips For Preparing Your House For Sale

When acting as your own real estate agent, it is imperative that you cover all bases adequately.

(there is a free ebook: 101 Tips For Selling Your House, for you to download, that gives you plenty of tips for preparing your home for sale, from a link at the bottom of this page).

You must have a for sale by owner home that is in excellent condition and ready to be shown to potential buyers.

It is not difficult to prepare your for sale by owner home for show but it does require proper planning and a little bit of work on your part to ensure success.

The outside of your for sale by owner home is the first thing potential buyers will see so it is very important to make sure it is clean and attractive.

?Curb appeal,? or the way your home looks from the outside, is what attracts potential buyers so if you spruce it up a bit, they will want to view the inside of the for sale by owner home.

A neatly manicured and well-kept lawn implicitly signifies a well maintained for sale by owner home. You should make a weekly habit of cutting your lawn while your home is on display for sale. Be sure to rake leaves and to sweep the sidewalks on the weekends when your house is to be shown.

If you have shrubs and or trees, remove debris and dead limbs to make them more presentable. It is a nice touch to plant extra flowers for color or to add potted flowers to lighten up the landscaping.

If fences are in ill repair or need work, repair them and touch them up with stain or with paint. Put away lawn equipment, children?s? toys, and any other outdoor items.

Keep large pets with neighbors so they do not interfere with the showing of your for sale by owner home.

The inside of your for sale by owner home is next on the list to make presentable for showing. It has been proven that people buy homes that appear spacious, clean, and solid.

Dark colors and clutter turn off most buyers, this means you must get rid of everything that you can possibly live without.

A good rule of thumb is this, if you cannot see your baseboard, the room is probably very cluttered.

To get rid of unnecessary things you may have, you may donate them to a charity or have a garage sale. The larger items that you must keep can be placed in storage.

If you will be painting your interior, use white or an off-white paint. You should also replace your light bulbs with brighter, higher wattage bulbs. Again, the look you are going for is bright and spacious. Be sure to clean everything thoroughly including carpets and mirrored surfaces.

Clean the oven and all appliances and be sure to polish any chrome fixtures. Be especially particular about ridding your home of any odors such as from smoke or from pets.

Fix any loose doorknobs, repair any broken windowpanes or leaky windowsills. Be sure any light fixtures are secure and in good repair. Also, be sure to repair any leaky pipes and to reapply caulk as needed.

These general tips will get you started on preparing your for sale by owner home for show. It is a good practice to view the for sale by owner home as though you are the buyer and to be particularly hard on yourself so a potential buyer won?t have to be.

If you are worried that you may overlook something, it won?t hurt to get a friend or neighbor to do a walk thru of the home and to critique your efforts. This will ensure a complete and thorough preparation and will boost the appeal of your home.

If you follow these tips you should have no trouble in selling your house.

Buy A Vending Machine ? What To Watch Out For

When you want to buy a vending machine, you have to be careful of what you?re buying. Sometimes a deal that sounds too good to be true is just that and you may end up buying a vending machine that will not be good for your business. There are ads for vending machines as a part of a package deal where the machines are already in place and you purchase the whole vending machine business. Before you buy any used vending machines, you do need to inspect them. You might also want to take someone with you that knows about these machines when you go to buy a vending machine.

Something that you have to be cognizant of when you buy a vending machine is the ease of use. If the vending machine is simple enough for children to operate, then you have something that will help you succeed in the vending machine business. Buying vending machines with a lot of gadgets and knobs may look really nice, but if it is difficult to operate then you won?t have many sales.

Another factor that you have to look at when buying vending machines is the area where the product comes out. You have to really look at the vending machine to see if customers will have difficulty reaching in to take out the products. You also need to check that the machine is safe for children to use. If an accident should happen to a child, then the storeowner may ask you to remove it from his/her property. There are more things to consider than the size and shape of the machine when you want to buy a vending machine.

Since each vending machine is manufactured to dispense a specific product you need to have some idea of what you want to sell when you buy a vending machine. This means doing your homework in advance as to how easy or difficult it will be to get the supply of products that you want and of course, how much they will cost. Buying vending machines also means that you have to know how they work so that you can do the repairs yourself if something goes wrong. You should also spend some time in an area where there are vending machines to see which ones the customers like the best.

When you buy a vending machine, you are giving yourself a start in a home based business that you can operate on your own time. You don?t need to invest a lot of money by buying several vending machines. Just start off with one and then gradually work your way up. You will need to continue in your regular job until you do get established so it is best if you use your weekends for the servicing of the machines. After you see the profits starting to roll in, you might want to buy a vending machine for a different product or continue with the same products as you have.

The Secret to Cleaning Your Metal Detecting Finds

In general, larger searchcoils will give better depth with larger targets and
better ground coverage. However, sensitivity to smaller objects may be
sacrificed. Smaller searchcoils will offer greater sensitivity to smaller objects
and improved target separation in trashy soil. There are certain features
needed for certain places the device is going to be used for. If you intend
to use it on the beach, the terrain wont be that rigorous. But you are
going to need waterproof protection.

A recent study proves that hand-held metal detectors are just as accurate
as x-rays in finding coins and other metallic objects swallowed by children.
They are cheaper and radiation-free, are usually lightweight, highly
sensitive and require little maintenance. The special shape of the sensitive
surface makes operation of the device easy, unlike portable metal
detectors with ring transducers.

In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell constructed one of the world??s first metal
detectors in an attempt to find an assassin’s bullet in President James
Garfield. Fischer patented a portable version in 1931.

The Secret to Cleaning Your Metal Detecting Finds

Metal detecting is considered to be one of today’s most sought-after
hobbies. In fact, nearly 80% of people who are into treasure hunting love
metal detecting as well. Many people have tried metal detecting, but only
those who know what it takes to become successful in metal detecting
accomplish something. People who persevere the most tend to find more
treasures than any other person does, even if they have been doing
metal detecting for many years.

This goes to show that metal detecting is not just any “finder’s keepers,
losers weepers” game. The valuables that people find are not appraised
just because they are rare. Most importantly, their values depend on the
perseverance people use when finding metals.

However, metal detecting is not just plain what you see is what you get
activity. Since most of the treasures are buried beneath the earth, you
can expect layers upon layers of sand, mud, or dirt on the items. Now,
the question is: Is it safe to clean these items?

There are some manufacturers of cleaning solutions that suggest you
clean your items. However, if your metal detector finds include coins of
high value, it is best not to clean them.

Metal detectors work on the principal of electromagnetics and their
effects on conductive metals. There are actually two separate elements in
the coil of a typical unit. One is a high-powered coil of metal which uses
the battery power to generate a penetrating magnetic field.

Will smaller children be using this detector? If this is to be a family
detector then it is critical that you consider the size of the detector
including how short the pole can be. Any place there is construction and
the ground is being cleared, that is a great place to start treasure
hunting. Successfull treasure hunting starts with having the right metal
detector. But which type of metal detector should you get? Complete
info on metal detectors and treasure hunting at detect-metal.info.

In older parks check in front of bandstands or areas where people would
sit, to listen to bands playing in the summer. Another good place is
baseball diamonds. Check the infield and the area where the players
would wait to play. Also look in the area that the families and fans would
watch the game from. As with other electronic equipments, innovations
seems to always happen overnight. If you are going to buy a metal
detector today, try to know that technologies are currently employed.
You do not want to be behind the technology line, right?

Metal detectors using PI (Pulse Induction) technology often makes use of
a single coil or even a series of coils that works as a receiver and the
transmitter. The short bursts of electricity are allowed to pass through a
coil or wire which causes magnetism. This means that coins classified as
“key collector’s items” should never be cleaned. This is to preserve the
mint mark and the date on the coins.

If you have found non-key collector’s items, or those with the typical
“face values,” you can clean them using mild solution. However, the
cleaning process will depend on the kind of coin you have found. For
example, copper and nickel can both be cleaned with the same process.
Other coins are cleaned using a different cleaning process and techniques.

Here are also some tips on eliminating stains on your coins. You can try
using the salt and vinegar solution. This will remove stubborn stains or
those that were not removed with the usual cleaning solution. The key
here is to evaluate, analyze, and appraise your metal detector finds before
you start cleaning them. This way you will be able to detect if a certain
item is more valuable when preserved and kept the way you have found
it, or if it has to undergo a special cleaning process to make it more
appealing and presentable.

Indeed, cleaning metal detecting finds may or may not be advantageous,
depending on the kind of items that you have. So to ensure quality,
always evaluate your items first. There are many different types of metal
detectors, some are more complicated then others. Find out how you can
go treasure hunting today!

Hand-held Metal Detectors are designed to safeguard security-sensitive
areas like schools, courtrooms, corrections facilities, sports events,
businesses, nightclubs, bars and other public areas and events. They are
used along with walk-through metal detectors. It is responsible for
receiving frequencies that bounce back from the object that the coil
detects. This type of detector is best for identifying different types of
metals.

It does, however, have its own downsides. Some say that the knobs of
the Pro XL are quite loose and when adjusting it, you have to be careful
not to hit it with your arms. It is quite sensitive and bumping it may
require you to start or reset the adjustments. Some users put a rubber
band around the knobs to keep them from moving or becoming loose.
Most metal detector companies also offer supplementary services like
designing, material sourcing, prototyping, short run manufacturing,
upgrading or re-designing, assembly services and specialty packaging.

A Little Decluttering, Cleaning And Neutralizing Can Help Win Over Buyers

Setting up your house to sell, or home staging, is the process of preparing a home for sale, regardless of price or location. Staging focuses on simple steps to make your home appeal to the largest number of prospective buyers, without spending a lot of money. Creating an ideal home for buyers can be as simple as painting the walls, rearranging furniture or clearing the kitchen counter tops.

It’s essential to present your house in the best possible light. Remember how you felt when looking
for a home, and how many you passed over because they didn’t look good? You have to look at
your home with a buyers’ eyes!

Even though it’s your home and you still live there, it’s a good idea to get used to the fact that your
house is now a product. It has pluses and minuses, as well as competition. To be competitive, your
house should be priced right and look better than the others.

Probably the single most important thing you can do to prepare your home for sale is to declutter.
Houses are filled with objects we love and treasure. Look in just about every home and you’ll find a
shelf stuffed with favorite books, a mantel loaded with trinkets or a wall covered in family photos.
But when it comes time to sell a house, those items we cherish may look like just plain clutter to
prospective buyers. Your personal items make it difficult for prospective buyers to imagine
themselves and their trinkets and family photos filling the mantels and walls of the home.

Since you’re going to be packing to move anyway, get a head start by making your rooms look
larger and box up and store non-essential items. By removing some of the clutter, the focus shifts
from the “stuff” in the room to the room itself. Specifically, lighten the load on bookshelves by
packing up books, DVD’s, CD’s, etc. Remove items from kitchen countertops and magnets and
photos from refrigerator. Pack up trinkets and family photos from all rooms. Clean and neaten
closets, cabinets and pantries.

Neutralizing your home is also essential in creating an environment in which potential buyers can
easily envision themselves moving into your home with their own furnishings and taste. Removing
old wallpaper, and restoring walls to neutral colors goes a long way in ensuring your house will
appeal to a larger number of buyers for a minimal investment. Neutralizing worn or colorful carpet
can be costly, but replacing it before trying to sell your house will make for a faster sale and often
bring back more money in return.

Cleaning from top to bottom is another key element to getting your home ready for sale. In addition
to the basics, it is recommended that carpets are shampooed, door hardware is polished, and
windows and baseboards are cleaned.

Take care of all general maintenance items both in and outside of your home. Remember to oil
squeaky doors, tighten doorknobs, replace burned out light bulbs, re-caulk the bathrooms if
necessary and repair leaky faucets or toilets.

Finally, never truer is the statement “you never have a second chance to make a first impression”
than when trying to sell a home. The outside of the home is one of the most important areas
because it is what the buyer sees first. A clutter-free yard and well-maintained house are essential
in luring the buyer inside. From the moment a
potential
buyer
drives up, they should see a manicured lawn with no debris in sight and clear gutters
and downspouts in good repair. It’s always recommended to spruce up your flowerbeds and add
fresh mulch.

In total, there is much that can be done by a motivated homeowner to get his home in top condition
for sale. Minimal effort put forth in preparing your home for sale will surely be rewarded with a quick
sale at the best possible price.

Yard Sale Finds: Trash To Treasure

Yard Sale Finds: Trash To Treasure

 by: Abigail Beal

The weather gets warmer and many of us know this means one thing: yard sales. If you are a crafter, yard sales can be great places to find someone elses castaways and turn them into your treasures.

As a person that loves to do decoupage, I am forever on the lookout for wooden boxes to decoupage. But remember that yard sale bargains can also inspire you to try a craft you havent done before. A baby quilt I found made a great pillow, when I had little practice with sewing projects.

When looking for a find, what should you look for? If you can already imagine the object taking on a new life as something else, thats great. But there are plenty of things people have overlooked that with some time and imagination can be objects of beauty in your home.

If it is broken, do you know how to fix it? A dresser without knobs only needs new knobs but a dresser without a drawer is going to take some more work. Could you replace the dresser with a wicker basket you pull in and out? Could that drawer be replaced with a flat surface you could keep items like a handbag or shoes there? Start using your imagination and the solutions will come. Most objects can be recanted, repainted, repolished and reupolstured.

Sometimes with a trash to treasure project you may think it will become one thing and you change your mind halfway through the project. Be open to inspiration. Something may catch your eye and you choose to change the color scheme or the function of the craft.

Trash to treasure crafts can be very chic. Shabby chic as it is called is found in many decorating magazines. You are also doing something good for the environment, by reusing materials.

It is also important to know that not every trash to treasure project works and this doesnt mean it isnt successful. You may succeed in learning a new painting technique or something about quilting. Or you may learn something about what kind of project you do want to put in your living room, or what you really want to create right now. Every project is part of your learning experience as a crafter and an artist.

Some great trash to treasure items include chairs, tables, dressers, vintage cocktail dresses, baby quilts, spools, jewelry boxes, suitcases, costume jewelry, dolls, picture frames, magazines, books and mirrors. You probably can find many more items that begin to inspire you to create something special.

The only challenge about becoming a trash to treasure crafter is then it becomes very hard to actually allow others in your home to throw things out! Happy crafting!
